Sand and gravel are dropped when landed on pistons (both types), glass, ice, leaves (all types) and stairs (all types). This should not happen because in Minecraft pc this does not occur because items such as torch, pressure plate, chest among others is for this to happen naturally the opposite of the first items quoted.
This bug affects not only the piston but other items that normally should not happen such a bug.

In pocket
I am having the same problem in my Pocket Edition in my Realm. I have a gate that pistons push the gravel up to open the gate then the gravel is suppose to fall back down into position but then breaks. Everything worked fine until the latest upgrade.
Fixed for both types of pistons in 1.1.0.0.
Glass, ice, leaves, and stairs are still affected in 1.1.0.0

Finally my dragon egg randomizer that i copied from Panda4994 will be resetable without having to place the dragon egg again. But I'll have to wait for 1.1 to come out for iOS..
Falling Blocks breaking on Pistons is Fixed in 1.2.0.25.
For the issues where falling blocks break on other blocks, please refer to MCPE-20109
I used to have this problem in 0.16.0 but I just tested it with a regular and sticky piston using red and regular sand. The upper most block of regular sand becomes invisible after it falls and doesn't become visible until It's updated. Red sand works normally.
However, sand that falls to the side of a piston is destroyed. This happened in both combinations of red/reg sand and sticky/reg pistons.
So just place some blocks on a piston and try placing a gravity affected block on It's side. If it breaks after landing next to the piston, then this looks like a bug.
Ran this with mcpe 0.16.2 in wm10 on a 950.
