Maybe for weaker devices?
They seems to disappear for me when i'm 60 blocks away with a render distance of 8 chunks.
They also seem to disappear for me when i'm 256 blocks away with a render distance of 40 chunks.
This applies to the end crystals and the fire animation.
But also with other items in the overworld/nether too (grass, tallgrass, kelp, seagrass, etc.)
Looks like it's fixed with the new Nether generation.
Not sure if it's fixed for worlds with the old Nether generation.
This bug is back in 1.14.60, and it looks like it only turns into dirt when the light levels drop.
Not seeing anything in 1.14.60.

Yes it is, for 1.12.1.
Looks fixed in 1.9.
Is this WAI?
Seems like the "smooth lighting" shadow issue is fixed.
But the 'tree leaves being gray/white with "smooth lighting" turned off' issue is still persisting.
It looks to be fixed in 1.9.0.5.
I cannot reproduce this 1.9.0.5.
Is this still an issue in 1.8.1?
Is this issue still persisting in 1.8/1.9?
This might be patched.
No ticking delay seems to occur at all when taking drowning/fire damage.
Is this the case for anyone else?
