Type lag, chat lag, typing is delayed a lot.

So, I got the update for 1.2.5.12 today, and now chat has the REALLY annoying lag. I should mention I notice this also in the Xbox App & Xbox Beta app.(if they happen to be related)

Basically if I type "lol dude you failed that jump so hard" by the time I've typed "so hard" minecraft only shows "lol dude you failed tha"

I would probably just be like "well, I guess my pc is just slow" but I ONLY see it in MCW10 & Xbox App(and not always in the Xbox App).
I type pretty fast, and minecraft is just too slow to keep up? I don't know...

Not chrome, not notepad++, nothing else. So weird.

Reproduce:
1) Open chat.
2) Type whatever you want "hahhaha your so funny like damn boii you are just omgggg" - And it takes forever to update, this would be okay if it was delayed by some minuscule amount, like 100ms, fine, but it isn't.

Other things I want to mention)
1) This seems to be worse depending on amount of players on a server.
2) The first few words of whatever you type are fine, but anything after that is just painfully slow.
3) It appears in all text fields, not just chat.
4) It first appeared in 1.2.5
5) This ONLY happens on McW10 (well at least only this bad on McW10

Also updated to 1.2.5 - it seems a LOT has broken in this version, making it unplayable with friends. The chat lag was apparent back in 1.1.x era, but has returned. I also noticed that chat is limited to users between versions (win10 players sometimes can't see what ios or android users type)

I see there is a 1.2.6, but it's not available for download. Hopefully it's getting worked on.

Confirmed in Windows 10 1.2.5.52.

The chat window lags even in my single player world.

This problem also affects signs, and book and quill. Every letter key lags, but the lag becomes much worse (1-2 sec/key) after you stop keying. Non-text keys such as Backspace and Delete do not lag behind typing.

Speculation: Since the lag only happens with character-generating keys, it may have been caused by the removal of the hard-coded chat filter.

As a workaround in chat, you can hold down the enter key to keep generating keyboard inputs until it catches up. The extra newline characters are ignored by chat and don't add any noticeable lag.

Fix any time soon??? This is driving me crazy ;-;

migrated

Same here, also noticed that you can no longer navigate the text with control+arrow. this is very annoying. Windows 10, 12.2.5

migrated

Seeing the same. Note that once it does catch up and you hit Enter to send, it gets sent immediately, so I don't think it's necessarily an overall chat lag.

migrated

press enter does not catch up for me.

migrated

This is getting worse for me - if I use the enter key "trick", it's still several seconds after I hit 'esc' before the chat window closes.

If you hit esc repeatedly (trying to speed it up like the enter key) then sometimes the entire GUI disappears and I have to relog in order for it to come back.

GUI = anything onscreen other than the environment. Hot bar, health/hunger bars, etc.

UPDATE: Confirmed this bug is still present in the v1.2.7 release on Win10.

migrated

Issue is also not always consistent. Sometimes I won't have any chat lag. Other times I will type a whole sentence and hit send before i'm even seeing half of it on the chat window. Doesn't seem to matter if there is 2 player sin the realm or a full realm with 10 people. It does seem to be there more often than not.

migrated

Odd - I haven't seen any consistency issues - it is always there for me. I have tried both with and without texture packs (I normally play with Faithful 32x32) and seen no change.

System Specs:
64-bit Win10
Intel i5-6200U
8GB RAM

It is always there but seems to be worse when there are more people on the realm. I find as long as I'm typing it isn't terrible and can keep up for the most part, so short messages are manageable. But when I stop typing it stops and very slowly completes the final things I typed. Heaven help me if I want to back space to fix a typo, back space is delayed also. It happens on realms and single player worlds, effects signs also. I find if I hit the arrow key it helps the text to appear a little quicker. I'm a Windows10 player

Unfortunately, I have confirmed this bug is still present in v1.2.8.0

migrated

Everyone is faster to "confirm" this bug for new versions than me 😭 ill just let u guys do it😭

migrated

This same thing happens to me in the Overworls, but when I went to the End, it stopped laggin. I’m thinking it has something to do with lag. I have a really automated realm with lots of redstone and stuff, so it may have something to with that.

migrated

This is extremelly annoying. Been like this for months

migrated

Can you update it all at once? you're spamming my inbox with word changes. 7 emails in a row.

migrated

Oh god, sorry lmao!

migrated

I can concur and confirm this bug, and it's a recent development. I might as well be typing with one finger instead of 10, the rate the keystrokes sometimes register. It also likes to throw in the odd double-letter typo at random intervals, most often at the end of a sentence.

migrated

Can you fix the slow chat please? The lag is very annoying. I'm constantly waiting for my letters and words to catch up with me, and if i make a mistake or typo then backspace lag is even worse! Thanks in advance for fixing it, was fine before the update.

Auldrick

I find that it lags behind in proportion to how far ahead of it I've typed. If I type at full speed it lags very badly, but if I type just a tiny bit slower no lag occurs at all. So just a little slowdown in your typing speed works around the problem very nicely.

@All: Please limit new comments to reporting additional information about the problem. This is a tool for passing information to the developers, not for asking them to hurry up and fix it or for chatting with each other. The developers are aware of the issue and will fix it as soon as they can. Votes for an issue can help increase its priority, but comments pleading for a fix are just noise because literally everybody wants their bug fixed as soon as possible.

migrated

Can confirm!
Really annoying bug! If you are a fast type person, you would know about this bug. If you type any sentence at a fast pace, it's mostly that half of the sentence takes about 5-10 more seconds to type. For eg, if you type, "Hello, my name is BlazingBeam and I love playing Minecraft.", and by the time you are done with the sentence and have finished typing, the game will show it being still typed at a really slow pace and will show you that you are at, "Hello, my name is Blaz..." and so on. Please fix. Because sometimes, commands need to be quick and because of the chat lag, things go wrong often.( Like my cousin blew up my whole house because I wasn't able to tell him in time to stop, because we would stay there 2 more nights.)

migrated

Can confirm using Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition (This is most obvious in multiplayer)

migrated

Can confirm on MC Win10 using a surface pro 3 onscreen keyboard. Its very frustrating!

Could we get an actual developer update on this issue? I think this bug should be fixed as soon as possible, since it affects the game play very much. I am also still experiencing this issue on v1.2.9, so it seems that the devs do not have the time to, or simply don't care about, fixing this bug.

migrated

DEFINETLY CAN CONFIRM! HAS BEEN PLAGUING ME FOR MONTHS!

I am building a project with hundreds of signs, and this bug is SOOOO annoying. have to redo every other sign because of a spelling error. That's not to mention the lag, and this issue goes hand in hand with another annoying issue MCPE-30320.

PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP

migrated

I was wondering that this annoying bug was not fixed with 1.2.9, I can only agree with the others here that it has to be fixed asap. It effects quite every player using chat for messages or commands which causes unnecessary aggressions.
Here are some of my experiences on Win10:

  • the lag depends on the window size (big window size = big lag)

  • the longer the written texts are the bigger will be the lagg

  • copy&pasting long texts works well, so it seems to be caused by any input validation/processing after every typed character

Thanks in advance!

Usually, this happens if me if I do not wait a few seconds for all the Xbox stuff to load. This includes partner servers and realms.

TheTamedWolf

I noticed that on windows 10 edition I type /gamemode it will come out like: gamemode/ the e shows up almost 1.5 seconds later. And backspace doesn't work. Only until i press the right arrow key a couple time will I be able to backspace again.

I feel like this is made worse in v1.2.9. What can we do to get a Mojang developer to at least acknowledge this bug? Do they not play/test on Win10? It's pretty glaring and really damages the gameplay.

Auldrick

Don't worry, it was just a simple mistake. This is the main ticket and has been reopened.

migrated

Well at least a million people don't have to complain to get it reopened like on other support forums.

Interesting observation: I had to completely reset my Win10 machine due to other unrelated reasons about a month ago. This involved removing all user files and apps and restoring to basically what it was like when I got it from the factory.

I reinstalled Minecraft (v1.2.11.x) and the Faithful 64 texture pack, (so the same setup I had previously) and the lag is mostly gone, though it does show up sometimes, it's not nearly as much as it was previously.

Not sure what that helps, but thought I'd add it anyways.

TheRoyalBlock

I can still reproduce this on 1.2.11.x. I cannot reproduce it on my laptop, but it is very visible on my desktop PC. 5 seconds per letter. Very painful to type with, unfortunately.

Auldrick

Reminder: This bug only really affects people who type fast. The amount of lag increases the farther ahead of the displayed text you type. If you type a little slower, so that you're barely ahead of the displayed text, the lag is usually negligible.

Another method that seems to work is to hold down the right arrow key after you finish typing.

migrated

It doesn't "only really affect people who type fast". It severely impacts the ability to use the chat feature at all. Not only does it take significantly longer to "catch up" than it should, but it also often takes a few seconds to actually send the message, which means you can't exit the chat interface (to avoid a creeper attack, for instance) until it decides to catch up.

Just want to make sure you're not downplaying the effects this bug can have.

mojang come on man

Auldrick

@unknown: Have you not seen any improvement at all? For me the lag is essentially gone since 1.2.13.60. It's possible that there is more than one problem here, but some of us were only affected by the one(s) that got fixed. It would be good to know how many people are still affected.

migrated

It's like 96% less laggy, it's still there but very hard to notice. I'd call it fixed.

Josh74000MC

I type fast most of the time anyways too.

migrated

I'm pretty sure it's just as laggy as it was before, on multiplayer servers

Jonathan5733

Started happening to me after the 1.4 update. I'm seeing some kind of pattern. I have the lag, then while it is trying to catch up I can switch control options and the lag will go away until I log off and back on.

tryashtar

Another similar issue: Try pressing "slash" to open the command menu, then immediately typing "asdf." Frequently you'll get "/sdf" or "/df", despite all keys actually being pressed (as detected by QIPress)

Auldrick

Right after I downloaded 1.5.0, the lag was worse than ever. It was even slowing down audio and often producing buzzing whenever a chunk was being loaded. Turning off clouds and fancy leaves and reducing render distance didn't help noticeably.

Then, later that day, a Windows 10 cumulative update was installed and I also did some driver updates. Since then, all these symptoms have gone away. My gameplay hasn't been this smooth since before the Better Together update. I don't even have lag when loading the world! If you have this problem on Win 10 and haven't yet tried updating your system drivers, it's definitely worth a shot.

tryashtar

Easy steps to reproduce:
1. Open chat
2. Start spamming random letters on the keyboard at a fast rate
3. Quickly stop and press escape
4. Observe how long it takes for your message to finish appearing before the chat closes

Not seeing it happen for me in 1.14.60.

Is it happening for anyone else?

This issue should be closed, on 1.14 I'm not seeing any noticeable lag and it's seemed to slowly get better over time, you may want to test on some weaker hardware (not an i7-8765u) but other than that I think it's k. Maybe it's 99.9% fixed?
