Xbox cloud savefile has bloated up to 10x the real filesize and occupied my storage

Hello Team,

I play on Xbox Series X in survival mode, in a world that was created on Xbox360, ported to Xbox One und then to Series X, in which I used visual addons for a while and that is at the moment completely vanilla.

I recently (04.21.25) got an error message from Xbox after leaving and saving the game, when it tried to upload the file in the cloud, code 0x80830003. It said my storage for game files is full, but the world is only 330MB and there are just two other worlds which are even smaller. That said, my world would load and save with no issues localy despite the error message. It just poped up, when it tried so sync with the cloud.
I looked it up and found many players with this issue but no lasting solution. To play it safe I uploaded my world to realms (wich worked, I have it now on my PC too and as an export file).
I deleted all local savefiles on my xbox, as the solution for my error code recommends. When I started Minecraft afterwards I saw all my three worlds as the cloud versions, with the grey thumbnail, ready to sync back to my Xbox. But my main world showed a cloud file of 2.4GB instead of 330MB. Nearly 10 x bloated up, I don’t know how this could happen. I was just curious and tried to sync it back several times, but it wouldn't, the file was just to big for the local storage. Furthermore I noticed that my Minecraft installation file has grown 2.4GB evertime I tried to sync it to a total of 9GB when I saw it.
So I deleted my local files again and my clouddata for Minecraft too. I downloaded my world back from my realm and it’s 330MB, as it should. But it always saves super slowly now and I’m worried that it’s corrupetd.

I hope you can find out what causes this issue to prevent players from losing their worlds.

Kind regards and thanks!

A similar thing is happening to me except on local storage on my Xbox series X. My cumulative save data is too big when looking at it through the Xbox to be able to save, but according to Minecraft, my total world saves are much smaller. I am also going to be trying to download some of my worlds through realms. If you see this, let me know how it’s going!

Hi Abigail, thanks for your comment. I hope the realms thing worked out for you.
After I downloaded my world back from realms to my local worlds it worked for 1 month without issues. Then I got the error message again, but this time it explicitly tells me that the local save was successfull and only the cloud upload failed due to filesize. In the meanwhile I even deleted the other worlds, I only kept my main world. Its about 440 MB right now and thats all. What you describe is true for me too, the cumulative save data is much bigger than the world or it should be. It’s 3.9 GB for my profile plus 1.7 GB reserved storage to a total of 5.6 GB. And the game itself is 3.6 GB, but right after installation it was only 1.8 GB (store says about 2 GB). I also deinstalled my marketplace addons and cleared all caches etc. but it did not help. But thankfully I can save localy, I hope it’s working for you too again.
I’m curious how big your world is. MS doesn’t communicate the limit for save data on Xbox and no one knows. But I saw people on reddit with 2GB worlds and more on Xbox without problems.
Did you use some addons? I thought those might cause the trouble, because before using them everthing was fine for me.
I used Realismcraft, Realism VFX, Realistic Bioms, Soundscapes+, Actions & Stuff, the Lava chicken addon and the texture pack Classic Shadows (former Classic Shaders).

Thanks for telling me! That's interesting, I will look out for any changes once I download it from realms again, but this experience scared me so much I might just play it on realms exclusively because of its back up save files. From my research the cloud and local save limit for xbox is actually 2GB, which tracks since my cumulative saves now are over that for some reason. The actual game shouldn't be included in your limit. My world is supposed to be 221 MB, (but it's bloated to 2.1 GB) and didn't include any add ons or texture packs or anything. It's completely vanilla, so i doubt my problem is for that reason. I hope this problem gets fixed so you can play your world normally again : )

Thank you for your report!
