Performance Degradation When Chunk Loading

How To Recreate: Load into survival / creative and quickly move around the world. I specifically noticed this while using an elytra

Framerate should be steady when moving around and loading in chunks (around 190-200 fps).

Standing still i should be able to hit closer to 300 fps and now i only hit 170. When moving around (loading in chunks) i can only hit 50-60 fps.

After uninstalling and installing:

  • Game is on a fresh install and has these options selected: Vibrant Visuals (Or Fancy) / Everything max with volumetric fog quality turned off & billinear upscaling. Chunks are set to 28 on vibrant visuals and 32 on fancy.

  • Specs:

    i912900k

    RTX 4080

    32GB DDR5 6000MHZ

Do you have the Improved Input Response option enabled in Settings > Video? If so, does the issue still occur if you disable it and restart the game?

Note that the option cannot be adjusted if Vibrant Visuals is enabled, so make sure to disable that first if it's enabled.

Improved Input Response was enabled shortly before i made the report but after disablling that (alongside vsync) i still noticed heavy frame drops and inconsistent framerates. I specifically noticed this while playing realms / survival worlds.

I would like to grab more data specifically on my realm but i do understand they are down at the moment. I’d be happy to share the performance stats of my system as soon as they go back up.

I would like to share my experience on a creative world where i moved around the world spawnpoint. This is a newly generated world.

With Vsync and Improved Input Response Disabled:

  • Playing with Fancy Graphics: I noticed framerates sometimes shoot up to 450 and dip as low as 48 fps. Its extremely inconsistent and I cant seem to hit an average framerate. Moving around the world causes my cpu usage to drop to as low as 20 percent (for a very quick moment) and then jump up to 70 percent and then back to the middle of about 50 percent again. It does not remain steady. The reason i bring this up is because even in heavy modified worlds the cpu usage would not jump this erratically.

  • Playing with Vibrant Visuals: I noticed dips as low as 23 fps in a new generated world where i was moving around while in creative mode. Average fps sits around 50-90 fps. This is despite my gpu usage and cpu usage not exceeding more than 65 percent. When standing still it does not exceed more than 160 fps.

I’ve closed other apps and programs to ensure i get a consistent output.

What program are you using to display the FPS, GPU, and CPU usage? I wonder if you might be experiencing MCPE-230295 and are getting worse performance due to the game running on DirectX 11. In my case, the game performs noticeably worse when running on DirectX 11.

Sorry for the late response, i am just using nvidia’s overlay (run in administrator to avoid any issues). I have the latest graphics driver from nvidia and am up to date on direct x drivers (direct x 12).

To clarify i am running on their normal drivers and not the creator one that they offer.

I can also confirm that I am having the same issues on Bedrock Edition PC. Running a Windows 11 5090 build and definitely not getting the same fluid FPS that I got before the 1.21.120 update.

Before the update, I was able to get a stable 165fps (capped at my monitor refresh rate) in all circumstances including chunk loading at the recommended render distance on fancy graphics at 50 chunks. I have turned off V-Sync in the game directory files as well as turned off improved input response and I still have not had any improvements from the 30-45fps stuttering when chunks are rendered and being loaded.

It looks like this issue is being tracked under multiple bug reports (MCPE-232560, MCPE-230304 and MCPE-230304) so in order for the Mojang team to investigate, it may be useful to collate them all under one? I will defer that up to you though 🙂

I hope it can get fixed because it honestly has put me off from playing the game at all since that update launched, getting jagged drops and cutting out is really affecting playability for me!

I also have the same problem but my specs are different. My laptop used to run with 50 chunk render distance no problem. now I keep it down to 32 chunks.
