Skins from Mario Mash-up on Switch, and any gate-kept skins get replaced with default skin in any worlds

When I was surfing problems where players are unable to be equip skins from Mario Mash-up (like https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/49256746947853-Problem-loading-Mario-skin-packs-minecraft), I tested this issue on my Nintendo Switch by equipping a skin from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack in Super Mario Mash-up world, and found out I can’t get it equipped in the Mario Mash-up world. I tested it again on my PC and mobile with “skin pack test” (which can be found in a comment or from Attachments), and found that it’s caused by Platform / Multiplayer Restriction checks.

This bug causes players who use the skins from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack on Nintendo Switch, or other gate-kept / multiplayer restricted skin (i.e. “skin pack test.mcpack”), to be forcefully equipped with a failover skin (or a default skin, especially Steve, as of 26.52 on iOS and Switch, and 26.60.30 Preview on Windows) (see “peach looking different.mp4“ for Super Mario Mash-up pack on Nintendo Switch) on a world, regardless if multiplayer for that world was disabled (the world was in singleplayer).

This bug also defeats all existing workarounds (not mentioned) to reservation of separate amenities (i.e. platform restriction set for the skins) on skins, as doing so still forcefully replaces the skin you want to equip, with a failover skin, so this bug makes skins from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack on Nintendo Switch completely unusable in any worlds, even in Switch-specific multiplayer.

Steps to reproduce (either method can be done):

Method 1: from Main menu:

  1. If you want to reproduce this issue on Windows / iOS, import “skin pack test.mcpack”, If on Nintendo Switch, skip to step 2.

  2. With Minecraft open, go to Dressing Room

  3. Click the green hanger button (Classic Skins)

  4. if you’re trying to reproduce the issue on the Nintendo Switch, Select a skin from the Mario Mash-Up, otherwise, on Windows / iOS, select “GK person” from skin pack test

  5. Equip it

  6. Leave the Dressing Room and return to main menu

  7. Go to Play

  8. Click Create new world

  9. If on Nintendo Switch, Select Owned…, otherwise select “Create new world“

  10. If on Nintendo Switch, Find and select Mario Mash-Up

  11. Optional, go to Multiplayer

  12. If step 11 was done, disable Multiplayer toggle

  13. Click Create

  14. Switch to second / third person view

Method 2: in a world (done in “peach looking different.mp4“ on Nintendo Switch):

  1. If you want to reproduce this issue on Windows / iOS, import “skin pack test.mcpack”, If on Nintendo Switch, skip to step 2.

  2. In the pause screen of a world (or Mario Mash-Up world on Nintendo Switch), go to the Dressing Room

  3. Click the green hanger button (Classic Skins)

  4. if you’re trying to reproduce the issue on the Nintendo Switch, Select a skin from the Mario Mash-Up, otherwise, on Windows / iOS, select “GK person” from skin pack test

  5. Equip it

  6. Leave the Dressing Room and exit the pause screen

  7. Switch to second / third person view

Expected result: Like ≤26.50, The skin should be one equipped from the Mario Mash-up (Nintendo Switch) / skin pack test (others), otherwise workarounds (that I did not mention, in fear of them being defeated) could be done.

Observed result: The skin (forcefully) fails over to a default skin (i.e. Steve), even on Nintendo Switch, if the skin from the Mario Mash-up (i.e. Peach) was the one used in the Mario Mash-up world. Existing workarounds (that I didn’t mention, in fear of them being defeated, which now are) to such gates are also defeated as this bug blocks these skins from being equipped in the world in the first place.

Workarounds:

Patching the skin pack (from MCPE-239565, Windows and iOS only, not possible on the Nintendo Switch):

  1. Quit Minecraft (Preview)

  2. Go to %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock (for release) or %appdata\Minecraft Bedrock Preview (for Preview), or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft (Release) or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft Preview (Preview)

  3. Open Visual Studio Code from .\Users or .\games (includes player imports)

  4. In Visual Studio Code, click the magnifier icon (Search)

  5. Enable Regular expression

  6. Type "platform_locked": *true, * or \n.*"platform_locked": true, into the Search text box

  7. Look for the files that are being searched, make sure they are all manifest.json

  8. Leave Replace textbox blank

  9. Click Replace all

  10. If there's a pop-up, click "Replace"

After that, you can use affected skin pack (especially “skin pack test”) like those unaffected. Do note attempting this in premium_cache may break these skins from loading, so I had to have directory to it removed.

Use Sunny (Character Creator) instead of Luigi from Mario Mash-Up:

As Luigi doesn’t get forcefully replaced by Sunny, you’ll need to do it yourself.

  1. In the title screen, go to the Dressing Room

  2. Scroll to an empty slot, or one that uses Sunny

  3. If there’s no slot that uses Sunny, delete an unused / least used slot

  4. Click “Create Character”

  5. Select “Select a Character”

  6. Select Sunny from the list

  7. Click “Select”

  8. Leave the Dressing Room and return to main menu

After that, you can use the replacement to enjoy the game while it is not fixed.

Using a workaround add-on (assuming you are trying to import it to your Switch, if so, do it only if you have an active Realms and Nintendo Switch Online Subscription, and that the two devices are administrator(s) of the Realm), I do not have Realms subscription so the procedure might be rough:

  1. Download and import “Mario Mash-up skin workaround.mcaddon” from a comment to your PC or mobile

  2. In the play screen, click Edit on a world

  3. Scroll and select Resource Packs or Behavior Packs

  4. Activate “Mario Mash-up skin workaround”

  5. Follow the guide in Use Realms To Transfer A Minecraft: Bedrock Edition World To Another Device | Minecraft Help to transfer the world to the Nintendo Switch.

  6. After finishing the transfer, in the world on Nintendo Switch, if Cheats are enabled, run “/give @s workaroundoutfit:mario-(Character)” to give yourself an armor piece, otherwise you can also find them in the creative inventory (Equipment tab), they start with “item.skinworkaround.mario-…”.

  7. Equip the armor piece (can be done by pressing the use button, or moving the item to the legging slot if in survival inventory tab)

Note: For the Super Mario Mash-up Pack, this issue so far only affects Nintendo Switch. “skin pack test.mcpack” Demonstrates how players using skins from Super Mario Mash-up Pack could be affected, without being a developer or the skin pack being Super Mario themed.

Suggested solution: Remove this (anti-)feature entirely; revert to when it had been in 26.40-26.50, deprecate the platform restriction checks per https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/43526353304717-Deprecate-remove-platform-multiplayer-restriction-variable-entirely, deprecating the platform restriction checks properly would make the Super Mario Mash-up (and “skin pack test”) more usable than it’s release, or make the Super Mario Mash-up Pack’s fate go north (from https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360021759332--Licensed-Content-Super-Mario-mashup).

I know it sounds very bogus, but I only have a resource pack from Mario Mash-Up activated (that is pre-activated on the Mario Mash-up world), no behavior pack activated, issue still persists even with Only Allow Trusted Skins turned off.

Video proof (don’t mind the naming):

Affects multiple (Windows), with skin pack test.mcpack, which has the skin pack “skin pack test“ with GK Person.

[media]

Affects multiple (iOS).

The workaround that worked before 26.52 can’t be done at all as the host (and also multiplayer on iOS and Windows, with “skin pack test.mcpack”, as far as I tested), all players in affected skin will see themselves as one of failover skin (i.e. Steve), but on Switch (with the Super Mario Mash-up Pack), one of workaround could only be done in a multiplayer world, but even with Only Trusted Skins turned off on all players, other players will still see them as one of failover skins (i.e. Steve), and also on Switch, in a multiplayer world, unless they are the host, another workaround is defeated because they can no longer change skins in a multiplayer world in the first place, even if two skins / characters were not gate-kept.

As you probably know, the Platform Restriction was, and is a bad key (keys that are unreliable and may break during use), and even a key blocker (a thing that blocks doors from opening, so even legitimate users can’t access things behind the door) for me on Switch (and other players), it had been a key blocker in MCPE-239565 before. so I think making the Super Mario Mash-up Pack not platform restricted is one of (if not only) well-made keys (suggested solution), and there would be no key blockers that could worsen the experience with the Mario Mash-up (on Switch) ever again.

I think one thirds (1/3) of it may be caused by “First-use onboarding now starts the selected multiplayer world while the player's Character Creator appearance is still loading.“, found in https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/49175370527501-Minecraft-Bedrock-Edition-26-52-Hotfix-Changelog. Others (two thirds, 2/3) would be due to tightening of reservation of separate amenities (reserving the separate features, or gate-keeping) affecting the Mario Mash-up. So I still think it needs to be fixed by reverting to that of ≤26.50 where this change wasn’t made.

This bug has sent my fury meter off the roof again, but I had successfully take advantage of this bug (or new skin gate) (by making my “platform restricted” skin be replaced with a failover skin :D ), but still no workarounds to this bug for those who want to legitimately play the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack on Nintendo Switch now, so this issue can start being fixed now.

Also note, if one of my suggested solutions from MCPE-239565 (which is also in this report) was done instead, then this issue would not affect the Super Mario Mash-up Pack (and the issue in MCPE-241280 would not exist).

I have made (and tested) a workaround add-on to allow players to equip some skins from the Mario Mash-up as armors. This add-on also works around MCPE-242488 and MCPE-239629 (which are blocked by this bug but there is at least some proofs there). Please note if you’re importing it to the Nintendo Switch, due to MCPE-234296, activating this workaround add-on causes the Mario Mash-Up resource pack to be skipped from activating, and therefore the community port from MCPE-234296 may be needed.

Some known issues are that as they are armor pieces, the red tint when players themselves get hurt will not show, and they take leggings slot.

Please also note that some armor pieces will need a specific Character Creator combinations for best use.

Armor pieces (skins) that work without needing a specific Character Creator combos:

  • Luigi, Luigi with Poltergust, Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Kitsune Luigi, & Cat Peach

Armor pieces (skins) that require Small height for custom character (Character Creator skin / persona):

  • Mario, Mario with F.L.U.D.D., Diddy Kong, Wario, Petey Piranha, Dr. Mario, Kamek, Hammer Bro, Fire Mario, Tanooki Mario, Boomerang Mario, Propeller Mario, & Cat Mario

Armor piece (skin) that requires Tall height for custom character:

  • Rosalina

Incompatible (regardless of the skin / Character Creator combinations, so they are omitted from the add-on):

  • Yoshi, Toad, Captain Toad, Waluigi, Lemmy, Wendy, Morton, Larry, Iggy, Roy, Ludwig, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Boom Boom, Dry Bones, Bowser Jr., Toadette, & Birdo

For instructions on how to import the add-on, please see the description.

I tried troubleshooting the issue with skins from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack being unequipped in worlds on my Nintendo Switch:

Issue still persists with multiplayer turned off

Issue still persists with the device offline

Issue still persists hosting the world in Switch specific multiplayer over Nintendo Switch Online (no cross-platform multiplayer, and with LAN multiplayer disabled, and even in Mario Mash-up world)

Issue still persists joining a world in Switch specific multiplayer over Nintendo Switch Online (even in Mario Mash-up world)

Issue still persists in local wireless (even in Mario Mash-up world)

Workaround to allow use of skins to be used in multiplayer are defeated, even if used to troubleshoot these issues above.

Basically skins from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack are completely unusable in any worlds on Nintendo Switch, and so in my opinion, they are as effective as a paperweight.

And so based of this report I made (and similar symptoms in “skin pack test”, which can be downloaded from Attachments or previous comment), gate-keeping the skin pack (making it platform / multiplayer restricted) now just makes it unusable.
