Can’t enter worlds that have multiplayer disabled using skins from some packs, or if the skin is not loaded

Formerly “Cannot enter some worlds that have multiplayer disabled as multiplayer / platform restricted skin“, updated because the Super Mario Mash-up Pack on the Nintendo Switch is also affected, and “Can’t enter worlds that have multiplayer disabled using skins from Mario Mashup or multiplayer restricted skin“.

This bug causes players who use the skins from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack (Nintendo Switch only; not applicable to community ports of it) or other multiplayer restricted skin (i.e. “skin pack test.mcpack”), or if the skin is not loaded, to fail to enter worlds that have multiplayer disabled (aka. singleplayer world).

Steps to reproduce (either one can be done depending which platforms you use, the first two are guaranteed):

Method 1: on Nintendo Switch:

  1. With Minecraft open, click Play

  2. Click Edit on a world

  3. Click Multiplayer

  4. Turn off multiplayer

  5. Save and exit from the edit world screen

  6. Return to the title screen

  7. Go to the Dressing Room

  8. Click the green hanger icon (Classic Skins button)

  9. Select a skin from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack (Mario Mash-up)

  10. Equip it

  11. Return to the title screen

  12. Click Play

  13. Enter the world that is just edited

  14. If succeed, repeat steps 2 to 5 and 13 for another world

Method 2: on other platforms (Windows / iOS are recommended because the skin pack can be deleted after reproducing):

  1. Download and import the “skin pack test.mcpack“ listed below (importing is blocked by MCPE-227874 in Windows)

  2. With Minecraft open, click Play

  3. Click Edit on a world

  4. Click Multiplayer

  5. Turn off multiplayer

  6. Save and exit from the edit world screen

  7. Return to the title screen

  8. Go to the Dressing Room

  9. Click the green hanger icon (Classic Skins button)

  10. Scroll and equip a skin with “G” and “K” written on it (called “GK person”) from “skin pack test”, make sure it is multiplayer restricted

  11. Equip it

  12. Click Play

  13. Enter the world that is just edited

  14. If succeed, repeat steps 3 to 6 and 13 for another world

Method 3 (from MCPE-236202 or if the user on consoles is never bind to platform-specific online account): Attempting to enter when the skin / character is not loaded:

  1. Click Play

  2. If you are want to reproduce this via MCPE-236202, then do steps 3-8

  3. Click Edit on a world

  4. Click Multiplayer

  5. Turn off multiplayer

  6. Save and exit from the edit world screen

  7. Restart the game (or restart the device if it’s on Windows)

  8. With Minecraft open, click Play before the skin loads

  9. Enter a world (that has multiplayer disabled)

Expected result for all methods: It should enter as-is for all worlds

Observed result for all methods: In some worlds (as far as I tested), It does nothing, and only yields an error “There is a problem loading the world”; “The skin that you have equipped is from a content pack that is not allowed in cross-platform player” when accessing the Edit World screen of any, Clicking Play there on a world with multiplayer disabled also yields the same error.

Note: For the Super Mario Mash-up on Nintendo Switch, Considering the resource pack problem from MCPE-189600 is not fixed, this and it, among the issues I have with it, makes the Super Mario Mash-up Pack the least usable content pack ever in Minecraft Bedrock for Nintendo Switch. “skin pack test.mcpack” demonstrates how players using skins from Super Mario Mash-up Pack could be affected, without being a developer or the skin pack being Super Mario themed, with the biggest reason being that I hate that the Super Mario Mash-up Pack is too-exclusive and too-restrictive.

Suggested solution: Cease development of the platform restriction checks and deprecate the platform restriction checks per https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/43526353304717-Deprecate-remove-platform-multiplayer-restriction-variable-entirely, deprecating the platform restriction checks properly would make the Super Mario Mash-up (and “skin pack test”) the most usable it would ever be (from https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360021759332--Licensed-Content-Super-Mario-mashup).

Workarounds:

Patching the skin pack (Windows and iOS only, and excludes the Nintendo Switch):

  1. Quit Minecraft (Preview)

  2. Go to %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock (for release) or %appdata\Minecraft Bedrock Preview (for Preview), or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft (Release) or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft Preview (Preview)

  3. Open Visual Studio Code from .\premium_cache or .\internal\premium_cache (Marketplace downloads), or .\Users or .\games (includes player imports)

  4. In Visual Studio Code, click the magnifier icon (Search)

  5. Enable Regular expression

  6. Type "platform_locked": *true, * or \n.*"platform_locked": true, into the Search text box

  7. Look for the files that are being searched, make sure they are all manifest.json

  8. Leave Replace textbox blank

  9. Click Replace all

  10. If there's a pop-up, click "Replace"

After that, you can use affected skin pack (especially “skin pack test”) like those unaffected, without doing the second.

Without patching the skin packs (assuming you’re on consoles that have platform-specific account signed in, or PC or mobile):

  1. Click Edit on a world

  2. Click Multiplayer

  3. Click Change skin from the pop-up

  4. Switch away from the slot(s) with skin from Super Mario Mash-up on Nintendo Switch or a skin with “G” and “K” written on it (“GK person” from “skin pack test”)

  5. Return to Edit World screen

  6. If you are doing this on a console but don’t have a platform-specific subscription, you may skip steps 7 to 13.

  7. Turn on Multiplayer

  8. Save and exit from Edit world screen

  9. Return to the title screen

  10. Go to Dressing Room

  11. Switch back to the affected skin

  12. Return to the title screen again

  13. Click Play

  14. Enter the world (that had been edited)

After that, if you have a platform-specific subscription, you’re safe to disable multiplayer for that world again, but you’ll have to do that workaround again once the world was entered with skins other than from the multiplayer / platform restricted skin pack (i.e. unpatched “skin pack test”).

Steps to delete the skin pack imported from this report (Windows and iOS):

  1. For release version, go to %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock\Users\Shared\games\com.mojang\skin_packs (Windows) or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft\games\com.mojang\skin_packs (iOS), for Preview version, go to go to %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock Preview\Users\Shared\games\com.mojang\skin_packs (Windows) or My iPhone / My iPad\Minecraft Preview\games\com.mojang\skin_packs (iOS)

  2. Delete the skin packed called “skin pack test” (the name’s might be incomplete, like “skinpackte")

As described by the User Florian earlier as off version 26.30 (Switch 1) the skin preview in the main menu doesn’t load (loading circle remains). No special skins were used on that profile ever.

Worlds then cannot be loaded (There is a clicking sound but nothing else happens) as long as the loading circle in the preview remains. New worlds can be created and entered. When exiting to the main menu a new skin appears in the preview and worlds can be loaded as long as you dont exit the game. After exiting the problem reappears.

In addition the split screen for multiplayer on the same console doesn't work and resets almost instantly without an error message.

This (childrens) profile is not connected with a Nintendo account so I can’t change the skin. The problem can be reproduced with other profiles so there is no obvious connection to the use of a specific skin pack.

Deleting the cache, archieve or reinstall doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the comment, I was wondering why the duplicates (including one affecting PlayStation) stated they cannot enter worlds with Multiplayer disabled. However I had reproduced this issue when the skin is not loaded (the loading circle remains) in the Title screen on my PC (much like yours, but had been reported at MCPE-236202).

@Andreas Kurzthaler I can now reproduce the issue you are having, and the only workaround (if not to create another user) is to erase the save and start all over. Will make a method 3 that is caused by this or MCPE-236202.

*the one that requires erasing saves as one of workaround, was done on my Original Nintendo Switch, not Windows PC.

Fixed in 26.32 Hotfix, at least on Windows and iOS (because I haven’t received that version on my Switch yet)

Also fixed in 26.32 on Nintendo Switch

Still fixed in 26.40.30. from the changelog:

  • Players with multiplayer restricted skins can now enter worlds with multiplayer disabled
