Importing .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld files while the game is opened no longer works

If you try to import an .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld files while the game is opened, only the game window will be focused, the pack/world will not be imported to the game.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Download the attached .mcpack files in the report, or download any .mcpack, .mcaddon or .mcworld files from 3rd party sites such as MCPEDL or Modbay

  2. Launch Minecraft or Minecraft Preview and wait until the Main menu appears

  3. Double-click the files you've downloaded, and select Minecraft for Windows or Minecraft Preview for Windows if asked

  4. Observe

Expected results:
The game window will be focused, then a notification appears at the top of the screen, and the pack with the name "copper_lantern_anim_fix" is available on "My Packs".

Observed results:
The game window will be focused, but there's no notification at all at the top of the screen, and the pack with the name "copper_lantern_anim_fix" is not available on "My Packs".

Workarounds:
Until this issue is fixed, you can import the files by closing the game, then double-clicking the files you want to import, the game will be automatically opened and should imported the pack/world to your game, please note that you need to repeat the process every time you want to import a files.

It doesn’t import when the game is closed too

For me, when you double click the files it just opens Minecraft, never even tries to import.

I have the same issue as Mike; it just opens Minecraft and does not import at all. Th only way I can import mods for my worlds or realm is if I do it all through my iphone

1.21.123 is affected aswell. For me it behaves as described by the original poster.

I have this issue too. Players should be able to import multiple packs files while the game is open, without needing to close and relaunch Minecraft each time like before.

I am confirming this bug in version 1.21.124 Hotfix (Windows 11 25H2), and it has become more severe.

Test Results:

  1. Standard Double-Click Method (Game Closed): Double-clicking an .mcaddon or .mcpack file launches Minecraft, but no import notification appears. The pack is not added to "My Packs".

  2. Original Workaround (Game Closed): The reported workaround of closing the game before importing no longer works. The behavior is identical to point 1.

  3. Manual Installation Method: After renaming the file to .zip, extracting it, and copying the folder to the correct com.mojang\\behavior_packs (or resource_packs) directory, the pack does not appear in the game's Settings > Storage section. It is completely invisible to the game.

Conclusion: All known methods of installing add-ons (double-click import and manual file copy) are currently non-functional in this version. This completely blocks add-on usage on Windows.

I am confirming that this is still a prominent issue in v1.21.131, however the “more severe” symptoms that @cmdcorp6534 described appear to no longer be an issue.

Packs can still be imported by closing the game and opening the file, but if the game is already running it still wont import.
