It's hard to fight mobs if they get in a boat. I end up having to retreat for a bow to get them out of my boat.

As another workaround, you can go underneath the boat and safely break it first, then fight the mob.

Somebody might have already mentioned this: Zombies can reach so far in a boat that they can reach through walls/blocks. It's how most of my villagers died because the door they pass through is next to a wall that houses a zombie in a boat, and it was attacking them every time they passed by it.
