I hide barrels behind the wall behind my nether portal, and sometimes I walk into the nether portal as I open a barrel and it sometimes, if the timing is just right, will cause containers like barrels and chests to appear open, but you cannot access the items inside the container. I learned that if you then open a crafting block like a crafting table, stone cutter, or cartography table, it will then allow containers to work normally. I have also tried opening a crafting table and walking into a nether portal, but it doesn't seem to have the same bug.
I was expecting maybe the chest would work like a the crafting table and it would close as you enter the portal, however it stayed open, and I could not open any containers until I exited the world and came back, opened a crafting block, or went into another dimension. There is a video clip below that demonstrates how to replicate this issue.

The is happening in the 1.16.220.51 Beta, with the added issue: When opening a chest as you go through a portal, it never shows those items, and it also makes it impossible to even access inventory, any other chests, tracked tables, etc. You can access items on your hotbar but nothing else. The way I was able to resolve it was to die and respawn.
i just tested this and it still works in 1.16.221
this could defenetively be abused as 'chestbans' on hardcore worlds
The bug still happens on the latest version, 1.19.51. I attempted to replicate the bug on a singleplayer world, but it only seems to affect realms/servers. Containers, once stuck open, also appear that way to other players, and they will stay open until the player who bugged them open relogs and opens and closes the chests again. Other players can still interact with the bugged chests, but they don't play an animation.
The bug does not stop, in my testing, after opening a crafting block (as it prevents you from doing so entirely) or switching dimensions, only after relogging.
1.20.81 Switch OLED, Game Card
Bug still persists.
Another way to trigger the bug is to open the inventory within the same tick as opening any container (or any block that has a UI).
This still happens on 1.13.0. I am on iPadOS 13.2 on an iPad Pro 12.9” Gen 1.
I discovered this with a shulker box when I accidentally opened mine then ran into a Nether Portal.
What happened is I was kicked out of the GUI of the Shulker Box and even after breaking it and placing it, it still didn’t work. Tapping on a shulker box after this has happened results in the shulker box opening but not popping up the GUI.
I then tested this with chests and the same thing happens, even after breaking and replacing the chest. I assume Ender Chests would be the same.
To fix it I simply relogged the world and it made everything work as intended.
