Mobs spawning at any light level

Mobs like creepers, skeletons and spiders are spawning in my house even though I put torches everywhere and it was very lit up.

Can you post a screenshot?

It doesn't look like there's that many torches in the screenshots, though then again, I tend to go overboard. To be 100% sure:

  1. Disable smooth lighting first.

  2. Go to each torch on the floor, then check 7 blocks from the block the torch is on in each cardinal direction (i.e. straight from the torch) to ensure that those spots aren't dark. The light from at least one other torch should have reached there, and if it hasn't, it's at a light level of 7 and a mob could spawn there and you should skip to step 4 immediately.Β

  3. Go along the diagonals connecting those four "corners" to make sure that there are no dark spots at 7 there.

  4. If there was a spot at level 7, a torch somewhere nearby to light the block(s)

  5. Repeat with wall torches, but subtract one less than the number of blocks that it's at above the floor, i.e. for the torch that's two blocks up in the first screenshot, go 6 blocks, for the one above the glass three blocks from the floor in the second one, go 5, and so on.

  6. See if mobs spawn. If they do, then that's likely a bug, if they don't, then it was the torch placement that was the issue.

I tried it and as you can see it still spawns mobs

If your house is connected to your mine, make sure the mine is lit or covered. The same thing happened to me until I but trapdoors over my mine.

It looks like _might be _enough light in the room in the picture, but I can’t tell for sure, and I can't tell if the zombie may have walked in there from somewhere else, as Ruhaan Joshi says about possible mines below. Zombies can target through opaque blocks up to 35 blocks away and it could have followed you. If you’d like to share a copy of the world I can analyze the situation more fully.

Update:

The picture provided is not conclusive. We would like to see a world save, or to know if adding more light and/or checking entrances has stopped further monster appearances in the room. Therefore, this ticket will be resolved "awaiting response" and will automatically open when the OP responds.

We have been receiving a lot of reports of monsters spawning in lit rooms since 1.16 release, but in every case it has turned out that the rooms were not adequately lit. So, allow me to share the following information:

In previous versions of Minecraft, it was common for the cave monster cap to be filled by monsters hidden in small, inaccessible caves. The chance of this happening would increase as you spent time in an area, for example building a base or exploring and the lighting visible caves. With the new despawning system in 1.16, the hidden monsters are now able to despawn regularly, so new ones can spawn in other places. Monsters should now regularly respawn on full blocks in places you have already visited but have not fully lit.

Keep in mind that torches have a light level of 14, monsters spawn in in light level 7 and below, and spawning is based on the light level of the space just above the floor. You may find it helpful to temporarily turn off smooth lighting (in video settings) to see how the light levels change block by block.

Cleaning up old tickets: This ticket had been set to 'Awaiting Response', but has not received a response from the reporter (~3 months+) so is being closed as Incomplete. If you feel this is still a valid issue then please comment, or create a new ticket following the Issue Guidelines which includes steps to reproduce the problem.
