The bug
Repost of MC-135157 for bedrock
You are unable to plant crops like wheat, potatoes, carrots, beetroot, pumpkin stem, melon stem or nether warts by aiming at the side or bottom of a block. This only works when aiming directly at the farmland or soul sand. This also was a bug on java edition, which got fixed in 1.14, however it is not fixed on bedrock yet. This also affects sweet berry bushes, see MCPE-54049.
How to reproduce:
Create farmland
Place a block next to the block above the farmland
Aim at the side of that block
Hold wheat seeds in your hand
Right click
What I expected to happen: You will plant the crop.
What actually happened: Nothing happened upon right clicking.

Why would you expect to be able to plant anything when not aiming at the ground? Just “Because Java”? It sounds more like a bug in Java to me.
Moreover, this is not a valid feature parity issue since the Java ticket mentioned was resolved well before the Buzzy Bees update.
Also, if the block you’re aiming into the side or bottom of is also a farmland block, wouldn’t you expect the crops to be planted in that block?

Yes, it is not introduced in the buzzy bees update or later, but that doesn't matter, because it was a bug on java, so why shouldn't it be a bug on bedrock? This is also inconsistent with other blocks: Most blocks can be placed by aiming at any side of a block, so I also expect it to work with crops.
Or in short: Planting crops should always work like placing any block (because it is placing a block) so it should work when aiming at any side of a block, not just the top side of the farmland.

And also saplings and bamboo can be planted by aiming at the side of a block, but crops that can be planted on farmland not.
