iOS devices overheating after 1.16.20 update

I played Minecraft that morning on an older version and my phone was just fine but as soon as i update it, my phone would get incredibly hot to the point where it's unplayable. i play on an iPhone XR ( which is only a year old). I also play with bluetooth headphones and controller. The gameplay is fine, i don't lose fps, but my phone itself just heats up to unsettling temperatures.

Are you using a case or in a really hot room? Both can mean that the phone cannot ventilate properly and any demanding app is going to overheat it(specially if you are also charging it)

Original Summary:

For some reason every since i update my phone to the latest minecraft update, my phone would get extremely hot, to the point where my phone has to stop all activity and tell me my phone has gotten incredibly hot.

In addition to Urielsalis' comment, do you have additional texture packs applied? Does the issue persist if you remove them?

In a similar vein, does this occur with a new world or only an existing, built up world?

I have had the same situation. iPhone 11 Pro Max on the most recent iOS and I have a very light case, but I’ve also had the issue when I’ve taken the case off. Phone gets hot where it never did before and causes the phone to limit brightness. Also causes significant battery drain. Way more so than before the update to 1.16.20 I have no mod packs or data packs. Also not playing while charging my phone. Before the update this was never a concern, it only happened right after i downloaded 1.16.20. I have to most recent iPhone, if it cannot handle the game then I think something must be wrong.

Can confirm, running vanilla textures & 0 behavior packs. My chipset overheats on both my samsung a71uw & dell pc running windows 10, whereas before I was running the game flawless with 0 heat issues prior to 1.16.20

As far as I can tell, it has the most issues on a local world, but realms & lan worlds are definitely warmer after the update

Device: Iphone SE 2020 (brand new this year)

Can confirm there’s an overheating issue. On previous versions of the game it would barely get warm, now it gets dangerously hot to the point that it’s probably damaging my chip and battery. I even took my case off, but holding it for too long now burns my hands if I attempt to play the game for too long.

Just to make sure it wasn’t my mods I deleted the app and completely wiped any files left behind. Re-installed and tested it vanilla without touching any settings, but it still got really hot from just sitting on the menu screen. Would get even worse when I entered into a vanilla survival world, not settings touched.

I’ve had several instances where my phone hit the maximum heat threshold for the device and shut down since the update.

i can confirm that i am not using any texture nor behavior packs. i am using a light case but my phone would not get hot before the update. it get extremely hot by just being in minecraft, doesn't matter what world i am in.

migrated

My realm has this issue since the update too. 3 separate users on iPhones / iPad - all getting superheated, once shut down the phone after 20 mins of playing it was so hot. We are vanilla Bedrock on realms with no special add ons or packs. We've all been playing for months with no issues so this is a real shame.

migrated

Also having this same issue, with both iPhone 11 and iPad 2019. Game will sometimes randomly crash as well. Phone/tablet gets much warmer than prior version, even after turning rendering distance down to 8 chunks as well as turning down all effects. Even just sitting on the home screen the phone gets very hot. We love this game, but I'm worried it is going to damage the batteries in our devices!

Just using vanilla bedrock.

Same issue with iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd gen) and my PC (CPU: Intel i7 8700 @ 3.20GHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition). Gets my devices really hot and unplayable. FPS drops which is quite frankly surprising to say the least..

migrated

Happens on a PC too. I tested this with a GPU with 4 fans and it overheated and broke. Full speed too.

migrated

Just a note, this ticket should probably have its platforms changed to add pc & android as well, as its not only ios.

Is there any ETA on when this bug will be fixed? The game is literally unplayable for me atm. With an active realms subscription this is kind of annoying. I sure hope this doesn't take forever to fix

migrated

To add on to game being unplayable. I have been trying to play a little in between phone getting super hot and have noticed that items are disappearing. Have lost an Ender chest, a shulker box and a bed since this update. One minute they are there and then I stop playing due to phone getting very hot. Come back to game and things are just gone. Really like playing game with my son, but current version has rendered game basically useless.

Same issue on Samsung s8, no texture packs, minimum chunk render distance etc. Before the 1.16.2 update i could be afk and leave my phone charging with minecraft open for 8 hours and it would be at room temperature. Now i play for 30 mins without charging and the app is force closed due to overheating

I really hate to be that one guy who keeps bumping the same bug report however I've came to the assumption that there will be no hotfix for this. Bumping so its seen in time for the next major update. I've canceled my realm for the time being.

My device is a Samsung Galaxy A71 UW, however I have issues with overheat on the pc version as well. Both since 1.16.20. I had no heating of any sort on mobile pre-1.16.20 @ 16 chunks render, same world after the patch my phone overheats in roughly 10 minutes @ 8 chunks. Also has extreme battery drain issues. Literally unplayable

Is this still an issue in the latest version 1.16.40 (on iOS)?

After downloading the update I'm still experiencing my phone getting hot enough for it to automatically reduce brightness. Using an IR thermometer the back of my case-less iphone registered 111 F. It doesn't seem to get hot as quick as before the update, but it is still happening where it didn't happen before the update to 1.16.20. I am running no data packs or anything of that nature. All my settings are on default and I have a Iphone 11 Pro Max running the latest version of iOS.

Minecraft: 1.16.40

Update: Alright so after downloading the latest update and playing for a little over an hour I can say that it has improved, NOT FIXED, improved. The phone no longer gets hot enough to force shut down. However it still gets abnormally warm, more so than before 1.16.20. On 1.14 - 1.16 I was able to use shaders, texture packs, and many mods just fine. On 1.16.40 it’s playable again, but if I tried to used shaders or high quality textures It would probably overheat again, which sucks and takes a lot of fun and enjoyment out of the game now. Also previously I was able to be on call or Discord call with my friends while playing Minecraft. If I tried that now I’m sure it would overheat now, which means trying to communicate and play with others is still null, again taking away any sense of enjoyment out of Minecraft at this point.

Updated to 1.16.40, iPad Mini 5

My device still gets hot, but slower than before. Apparently app is not crashing anymore. It’s better than 1.16.20 but the problem hasn’t been fixed.

As with everyone else, my device is still getting hot, however its slower than before. Definitely improved but not fixed. Samsung A71 UW, updated to 1.16.40

migrated

Updated to 1.16.50 / iOS updated to iPadOS 14 / Device: iPad mini 5

Still gets hot, the new hotfix didn’t resolve the problem. It never happened before 1.16.20. And now even the games get laggy often.

migrated

Nothing has improved, in fact it’s even worse now than last update. Device gets too hot to function at the most bare minimum and there’s no way I can even play with ONE other person without the device getting so hot it turns itself off. I can’t even hold my phone, it get’s so hot it burns my hands! Seriously Mojang this is absolutely ridiculous at this point! Ark Mobile, a game incredibly unoptimized BARELY gets my phone hot after HOURS of play!

Minecraft: 1.16.50

Still on 1.16.40 as there's no new update for Android yet, but overheating is still a massive issue... Coming up on 2 months with an unplayable game, must admit I expected a faster hotfix for this.

also if the iPhone/iPad is VERY HOT then it would give you the temperature warning (iOS 13 only) which interrupts gameplay

migrated

iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14.0.1, Bedrock 1.16.50. Phone gets way too hot. When playing while plugged into an 18W charger, the battery will only maintain its current level. When unplugged, forget about it. The phone will be dead in about an hour.

migrated

I really hate to bump this yet again, but its left the game nearly unplayable for me and likely everyone else here for the last two months. I wouldn't be bumping this but it seems like there's been no acknowledgement that this is even an issue. Sorry if I missed something obvious, I'm quite new to the bug tracker.

I use an iPhone 11 on iOS 14. I was in a cool environment inside. No direct sunlight. I was playing with an Xbox one controller with Bluetooth. Then my iPhone got a heat warning. It felt as if it could almost burn me.

migrated

Problems that cause intense heat like this can decrease battery health(how long until ur battery needs to be replaced) DRAMATICALLY!!! It also makes the whole phone slow down to decrease temperature. This makes the game almost unplayable at some times. It also makes my whole phone basically freeze due to the cpu overheating and needing to slow down to put out less heat so that it can cool down because of this game.

migrated

Marked as fixed in 1.16.100, definitely not the case. Same as before, however now the game runs slow in addition to being hot

@unknown this issue is for iOS devices only. I'd recommend to create this issue for android users as this report is only mentioning it for iOS devices.

migrated

The ticket simply has to be updated, as this bug encompasses multiple platforms. A new ticket would simply be marked as duplicate as it has been in the past

migrated

Same thing on android 10, no fps lose, but battery is over quickly

migrated

Well I’ve been noticing that my iPhone 12 overheats. So it affects 1.19.62 and 1.19.63
