The Nether Update brings unbelievable lag

Note

Please limit comments to new information. Before commenting here, check whether your issue is better described by MCPE-81308 or MCPE-85614 or MCPE-97408 or REALMS-4642.

Ever since update 1.14.60 and update 1.14.30, I have been experiencing performance issues which I have never had before. The same goes for my friend on the switch. This update causes the game to have lower FPS in most cases than in previous updates and this is a real problem as it also brings random lag spikes. Not only this, but when in areas such as woodland mansions, the game is pretty much unplayable. In 1.16.0, the nether doesn't lag, but the overworld still does, and in multiplayer the lag is unbearable.

Note: I play on iOS, but the lag also affects Windows 10, other mobiles, Switch and even Xbox One! Apparently according to comments Linux is also heavily hit.

How to reproduce:

  1. Enter a woodland mansion. This is the easiest way to see the performance issues.

  2. Change to creative if not on it and start flying.

  3. Prepare for strong performance issues!

UPDATE: Well, the bugs have got even worse. The game now crashes either if you are not updated to the latest software or if you are offline.

UPDATE 2: The game appears less laggy now, but there is a still a huge issue involving memory leaks when a) killing mobs and b) using maps or addons.

Yup. Android. So much lag here on latest update. Jittery on trains. Rendering non existent on flying. Damage lag on fall impact.

migrated

Yeah. Entering woodland mansions is a PAIN. Also, just to specify, have you experienced this since 1.14 came out?

migrated

Once the games loaded it seems fine  it takes a sec to render everything but it seems fine on my one S

migrated

@Kyle I confirm I was wrong ticket I was referring to the lag that there is only at the start of the game on xbox one but in the end then the game has good fps

migrated

Yeah it has good FPS, but not as good as it WAS. Trying to go into a woodland mansion is a NIGHTMARE. I have been coping with this for 3 MONTHS!

migrated

Okay, how many votes do you need for your bug to be noticed by Mojang?

migrated

Finaly mojang noticed since this is the original report on preformance issues

migrated

Same here but i got lots of crashes and also rare keyboard latency.

migrated

Yup. This is my original report. Wait so do Mojang now know about this? Will it be fixed?

migrated

The lag is unbearable, especially in a Woodland Mansion and in realm with others playing. I can barely kill anything, definitely cannot fly. I'm on Xbox One and didn't have these issues until 1.16 update.

migrated

I think Mojang will fix this bug in a 1.16.1 or 1.16.2 update.

migrated

Okay. 8 votes. Great! Keep up the votes and this bug will FINALLY be fixed! Also, friedricearoni, yup, woodland mansions are hideous. That is why they are my lag reproduction example.

migrated

Voted for this. It doesn't affect my laptop's CPU as heavily but it's worth voting for nonetheless as it's clear that this is a huge issue for players with Intel
and ARM-based CPUs where it seems to be hitting the hardest.

migrated

Voted for it to be fixed soon too. Can't stand the constant spikes of 100% cpu usage when I'm not in the nether

migrated

Also, what is 1.16.1?! Is it the beta for 1.16.20.50?

migrated

Yes same here! I’m getting about 30 FPS on my iPad Pro 2018 with a A12X chip with render distance at 8 with clouds and fancy graphics turned of. And about 55fps on my iPhone X with a A11 chip with render distance at 12 with clouds and fancy graphics on. This makes no sense because the A12X has more ram and is WAY FASTER then the A11. Not to mention that at max sensitivity (100%) on my iPad Pro with a 120 FPS display and its nowhere close to as smooth/sensitive as my iPhone X with a 60 FPS display. I’ve tried every thing like deleting the app, rebooting, restarting my iPad etc. this is a MAJOR problem I’ve canceled my realms subscription it’s so bad. And then theirs the problem with the screen safe area is COMPLETELY of center for ALL iPadOS/iOS devices with no hame button. Until the performance for iPad Pro 2018 and the sensitivity is smooth and the screen safe area is fixed I’m not going to be playing Minecraft or paying for realms anytime soon.

migrated

1.16.1 is a hotfix update i think

migrated

So it seems like minecraft is making CPUs work very hard, which causes it to heat up, it doesn’t affect CPUs like intel i9 too much is because the CPU is better at not heating up and the PC or Laptop it is in has a cooler, and mobile devices does not. If you could cool your mobile devices in some way it might run smoother. That’s just my thought.

migrated

Ive tried keeping my iPad Pro cool but no change in performance. And like I’ve said my iPhone X is way slower then my iPad and has worse thermals. And yet it runs the game faster.

Thanks away 🙂

migrated

Same thing happened to me my ipad air 2 runs much smoother than my ipad pro

and for some reason in the nether this does not happen

migrated

Yeah. Odd. I have that too.

migrated

When I play Minecraft on my IPad, it consumes a lot of battery power, and it gets very hot. I get the lag both in the Nether and the Overworld.

migrated

i think your ipad is just old

migrated

Yeah. Could be. The Nether doesn't lag at all, for some ridiculous reason, on most devices. Although Minecraft does drain battery PRETTY fast.

migrated

Definitely not because of the I-pad being old. My phone is brand new and before the update my game would run smooth at 16 chunk render distance and max graphics settings. Now I have fancy graphics off and a 6 chunk render distance and I get FPS drops regularly. Im on a Samsung Galaxy A40.

migrated

Didn't think so. Yeah, it's probably just the stupid update. I really want this to be fixed, as sometimes the lag can actually KILL you, LITERALLY.

migrated

I have also noticed it is much worse when moving around and the faster im moving the worse it is so it is probably chunk loading/unloading.

migrated

Yeah, that is really weird. Like flying or sprinting. Plus, woodland mansions are really laggy, probably because of their size.

migrated

(Unrelated question) is the screen safe area Broken by being off center for anyone not playing on a iPhone/iPad? its a problem for iPhones and iPads with no home button. is this a problem with other devices?

MCPE-54903

migrated

My game didn’t lag that much today. It was actually playable.

migrated

My IPad isn’t that old. It still works great

migrated

On android the lag is bad ya ehen moving from 1.14.30 to 1.14.60 the game became to laggy 1.16.0 made it kinda imposible to play

migrated

Chirag Alwani, did you get the 1.16.1 update for android?

migrated

Jason lin i ya got the update few days ago on android

migrated

Did it fix the lag issue?

migrated

Based on some testing I've done, the nether seems to be at 60fps, however, when moving around, the CPU goes to 100%. Ever since the 1.16.0.55 beta, the lag has become a lot more serious as there is a lot more lag around areas with a lot of stuff built in it. Recently, there also has been a lot more lag around my iron farm than usual and I've built nothing near it.

migrated

Jason lin it dident fix the issue

DrageonDB

Same for here, I am using 4gb ram, 64gb storage and adreno is lag. I want to decrease render distance, but lag is still have.

DrageonDB

20 render distance and move= <10 fps (small lag)

[media]

16 render distance and move= <20/25 fps (small lag)

[media]

random crashes after the lag rises, I play a big world and suddenly crash when a big lag.

migrated

Yeah, also that is EXACTLY what I am experiencing, except on a slightly less laggy scale. But it's gotta be like a 60fps to 30fps drop most of the time. And sometimes I get down to 1fps drops!

migrated

Jasper the problem is some issues votes dont mater if the issue is so complex like MCPE-12347

it takes mojang forever to be fixed. Its sadly still a issue since 2016 but hope this bug gets fixed since the lag is driving every one crazy

Jonathan5733

Cannot reproduce on Android, Windows 10, or Xbox One

migrated

@Jonathan Hanzel odd. It usually happens on every device. It depends what version you are on though and also if you are running or flying. Plus, multiplayer is very laggy if you are not the host.

Jonathan5733

I was testing on a Bedrock Dedicated Server, so that may be why.

migrated

My lag spikes happen on the switch. It doesn't matter where I am or what dimension. They just happen randomly.

migrated

Yeah, that happens to my friend too.

migrated

1.16.1 hotfix didn’t fix the lag.

migrated

In 1.16.0 the lag seems to start to go away, but when 1.16.1 came out the lag is back.

Jonathan5733

Update: can't reproduce on a regular world.

migrated

Some people are saying they can't reproduce, or that it's getting better. It's still unplayable for me. (windows 10 bedrock)

[media]
migrated

A good test world is truly bedrock s 1 world file

migrated

My minecraft is starting to getting better.Yesterday i play my survival world which is usually will lag and i can't play it but that time i play it like 30 minutes and it does not lag at all.But the server still lag though..

migrated

LeeJingErr, same but does 1.16.1 update still have lag. For me it does.

migrated

Actually my game is getting better.

migrated

Mine is pretty much the same. Also, Jason Lin, what do you play on? I play on an almost 4 year old ipad but I never had lag till now...

migrated

And Multiplayer is TERRIBLE.

migrated

Jasper George Humberston, I play on a IPad Air 2, it’s about 5-6 years old.

migrated

It still works great though

migrated

Yeah. Same here. Old iPad, but obviously ok, as everything else works fine. My Minecraft hasn't really been getting better, but it has stayed the same as it always was when the lag started. Hopefully 1.16.20 should fix it.

migrated

On the Minecraft wiki, I just read that a command is going to be made more efficient, improving performance. I think the lag will FINALLY be fixed!

Jonathan5733

This is very surprising to me that I'm using a 2012 laptop and not getting any lag, yet almost everyone else is using newer devices and getting high lag. EDIT: citation needed, going to the nether causes high CPU usage, using a high-level speed boost (through commands) near many mobs (especially in a nether fortress) causes the fans to spin faster (because they are louder), and fighting hoglins uses alot of RAM (other programs start complaining about "Memory error: Your PC is low on RAM. Please close other programs using large amounts of RAM")

migrated

It has been running smooth for me on the Nintendo Switch.

migrated

Same Phoenix TF, Minecraft on my IPad is not that smooth but it still playable, I still lags sometimes.

migrated

My Android is not old, its new and still the lag is unbearable. I cant play even for a second. I am really annoyed now.

migrated

It doesn’t matter how fancy your device is, I have the new iPad Pro and I still get insanely low FPS constantly. Whereas my much less powerful iPad Pro 10.5 inch runs perfectly fine.

migrated

The title has been changed, but I still got the lag since 1.14.60. Anyone else?

migrated

No I have only had it since 1.16 betas

migrated

I did not have a problem until 1.16. Running version 1.16.10. I have a Windows 10 laptop with an Intel i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz and 32 GB of RAM. The vid card is a GeForce GTX 965M running the latest drivers. Everything is fine as long as I'm not in a world. Any world I load, even one I just created, as soon as the world launches, CPU and RAM start increasing immensely, even on a newly created world that is only 3.2 MB in size. CPU sits between 90-100% and RAM just keeps increasing (I watched it get up to 2 GB in less than a minute without even moving in the world - just standing there). I do not see much in the way of I/O or network activity. If I look at the threads with Process Explorer, I have seven threads of ucrtbase.dll each running at around 10-15% CPU each. It happens as soon as the world loads, and it stops as soon as I save and quit. I usually save and quit after about 15-30 seconds because the CPU and GPU fans in my laptop are running so hard I don't want my system to overheat.  As you can see by my machine specs, while my machine is a few years old, it's still pretty powerful.

Also worth noting is that I can connect to worlds running on other devices in my house and my Minecraft client runs normally - between 5-10% CPU usage. So as long as the world isn't running locally on my Windows 10 system, Minecraft behaves normally. So whatever is causing the crazy CPU and memory usage is with local worlds only.

Hope this information is helpful to Mojang in figuring out a solution. My local worlds are pretty much unplayable. I'm going to keep looking at video settings and other workarounds in the meantime to see if I can get it usable again - I'll post back if I figure anything out.

Jonathan5733

It is possible that Mojang is unable to reproduce the issue. If not, I do not know why (it may require them to test another phenomenon like the one I mentioned above) since I do not work for Mojang. In addition - they likely have higher priority bugs such as one that prevents some from loading the game.

migrated

The fps drop affect me on multiplayer worlds aswell so it can just be worlds hosted by you. Im on a samsung Galaxy a40 ( about 3 months old).

migrated

After reading through the older comments and the most recent one, I'm wondering if my issue isn't different from most of the other people's here. I tried the newly created world again and this time I just let it run for a bit, holding my laptop off the desk while it ran to improve airflow. After close to two minutes, CPU usage came back down and held at around 25% and RAM held more or less steady at just over 2 GB for the process. At that point, I was able to move around the world without significant changes to CPU or RAM. Later today I'll try some of my larger worlds - maybe there's something going on during initial world load that I just need to wait out? Just wish it didn't make my laptop sound like it was going to explode...

migrated

So, after some RESEARCH! I discovered what the lag does. The Nether NEVER lags, but the overworld DOES. What's more, it does it when I sprint, fly or fight the Wither for example. It makes no sense...

migrated

The lag does affect me in the nether

migrated

The lag in the world is due to the generation of blocks which is slow or even MCPE-85614 🙃

Jonathan5733

Jasper George Humberston, for me it's the opposite (see this)

migrated

The game is very laggy on iPad Pro 2018, iPad Pro 2020. I'm sure this is just an optimization problem for A12X, A12Z. Because in iPad Pro 2017 A10X, the game works very smoothly. Even in 40 chunks vision setting, it maintains 60 fps. On the other hand, on the iPad Pro 2018, 2020, the frame is lowered even in the 8 chunks vision setting. Of course, I tested it with the same Minecraft version.

The gap in GPU performance between iPad Pro 2018, 2020 and iPad Pro 2017 is almost double. Nevertheless, in Minecraft, the iPad Pro 2017 works much much much smoother.

In conclusion, game performance issues on iPad Pro 2018, 2020 are not related to nether updates .It's still very smooth on the iPad Pro 2017.

Jonathan5733

1.16.20 has an issue where entities remain in memory (it may have been the cause of Jasper's crashing earlier) even after they are killed (or if an item is picked up, the item drop remains in memory) which is making things worse for troubleshooting this bug.

migrated

I noticed that the game crashes instantly crashes when you log into it without internet connection preventing you from playing as it always crashes during the loading screen when you open the game or after seconds in the main menu. I also noticed that if you sign out of your Xbox Live account, it will not crash neither online nor offline. I tested that on android and that began to happen on 1.16.20 .

migrated

Yup I have the crashing problem. Can play sometimes for 5 minutes but it crashes every time and at random. There doesn’t seem to be anything that triggers it, it just happens at random times. I am also on iPad. Makes no difference whether or not there’s an internet connection.

Jonathan5733

The crashes are likely caused by the memory leak I mentioned above.

DrageonDB

Affecting 6gb ram and 128gb storage. My phone is new but still causes lag until it crashes randomly.

migrated

Sometimes the game crash due to bug. Also for me a pop up box appear saying "Minecraft is not responding". The prompt message came 5 to 6 times during my gameplay. This has never happened to me in previous updates.

migrated

Same on xbox one most recent beta

migrated

affects 1.16.100.53 also

migrated

Same, I lag a lot when near a Woodland Mansion

Jonathan5733

The memory leak I mentioned earlier seems to be the cause of this issue. As a result, it affects the 1.16.100.55 beta

migrated

Yup. I get crashes if the game isn't updated to the EXACT latest software.

migrated

I’m so laggy too it’s not too fair that they haven’t solved it yet and I’m on iOS but I lag just every where in the game even in the menu 😞

migrated

I KNOW! How have they not fixed it yet?!

migrated

As of whatever hotfix/change in the last week or so that suddenly changed the pause menu, I'm now having this issue. the game is continuously taking up much more CPU than it did a week ago, regardless of what I'm doing - 70-80% while standing idle, on a server, with very few entities in the area, for example. The same areas would take (very literally) half that much a week ago.

migrated

UPDATE: I don't know HOW, but the lag is getting BETTER for me. I get no noticeable frame drops at all when sprinting or flying now, although some of my worlds still lag. I think the lag is being FIXED!

migrated

Yaaayyyy

migrated

I have the same issue but it’s the worst on my iPad Pro 2020 no matter the settings. And it also crashes sometimes.

[media]
GoldenHelmet

@Jasper George Humberston: comments are for adding new information that might be helpful understanding or fixing the report. For discussion, please use the Mojira Bug Tracker Discord.

@Jonathan Hanzel: can you provide more information about the memory leak you are asserting? Does MCPE-81308 describe that issue?

Jonathan5733

GoldenHelmet The memory leak I am talking about is related to killing entities (when an entity is killed it remains in memory until the world is exited). MCPE-81308 is related to increased render distance, however the two may be related. If you need me to, I will report the killing entities issue as a separate ticket.

GoldenHelmet

Thanks Jonathan Hanzel, I think MCPE-77266 should cover that issue based on the comment you left there.

xXGlitchSlayerXx

The reason why the game is having performance issues and lags all the time, is because the bedrock engine is not optimized for smooth gameplay, and I am having the same performance issues. For example, loading is sometimes slow.

migrated

There is also a massive memory leak involving maps and addons, which when they are downloaded or imported cause the game to grow in size FAR too much even after being deleted. I had this before and my Minecraft was 7 GIGABYTES in size!

migrated

Affects 1.16.200.53 Beta

owlfalls35

after 1.16.100, the game sometimes freezes entirely for up to 30 seconds.

migrated

I am kind of having this same issue wherein 1.16.100 every world or server I join I have some sort of 10 fps and I can barely play. I don't know if it's my laptop that is causing the lag or the game itself.

Platform: Windows 10

EDIT: I think I am the only person having this problem and it is only happening on 1 device.

migrated

Can confirm that 1.16.100 is generally very laggy. Chunks struggle to render at an acceptable pace (especially when flying), minecarts struggle, and block lag and general performance suffer. I play on Xbox.

migrated

Ever since the 1.16.40 update, I noticed frame stuttering while in an area in my world with a bunch of buildings and entities, when previously I wouldn't lag at all. My FPS here would be around 50-60, but then after the 1.16.200 update, lag has been increased in that building dense area despite no changes to anything there. Now I get 35-55 frames there with increased frame stuttering which has been quite annoying. My friends who also play on that world suffer even more lag than I do there since they play on mobile and I use Windows 10.

migrated

Affects 1.16.201 hotfix.

migrated

Apparently, it got even worse with the hotfix. I never faced stuttering playing minecraft on my computer (in contrast to my Xbox One). Now, the game CONSTANTLY lags, I can't even move without the fps heavily dropping - it's even worse than playing coop on the Xbox. I also tried the current beta version, which showed even worse performance (never got above 13 fps).

My device runs an AMD Athlon II X4 630, 8 gb RAM, SSD and a GeForce 750 TI with all the latest drivers installed.

Edit for additional information: All other games and tasks work normally, so it has to be a Minecraft related issue. Usually, I play on a realm (none of the other 2 players face these issues), but I also tested singleplayer yielding the same results. I now had the chance to play the game with my account on a different Windows 10 computer (AMD FX 6300, 8 gb RAM, SSD, Radeon R9 270X) and the performance was much, much better. Windows 10 was updated to the latest version on both systems. Of course, this computer is better than mine but since Minecraft automatically adjusts the settings based on the given hardware, this shouldn't be a problem. Talking about game settings, reducing the block rendering distance or anti aliasing on my computer didn't improve the performance at all. Changing vsync to 0 and maxframerate to 60 in the options.txt (as mentioned in other performance related bug reports) didn't help either.

migrated

My son can’t play minecraft anymore on ipad pro 12,9. We reloaded the game, re install the game. Yesterday evening he could play., yes! This morning te same problem: loads his world halfway and than it stops loading. Every 2 minutes there is an update but the problem seems worse than before. All the worlds from my son are gone + the game is unplayable. I’m just his mum with a complete non interest in minecraftproblems. Solve this because we never had problems before!

GoldenHelmet

@Luke Lagerwerf: what you describe is not this bug. It sounds like your iPad storage might be full. If you have Discord, I recommend you ask for help from Community Support.

BlizzLee

Yeah my CPU could handle 24 chunk render distance just fine but now I experience constant stuttering with 100% CPU usage. Even in some Marketplace worlds where chunks have already been generated by the map makers.

Funny how Bedrock is made to work on phones or other low powered devices yet the performance has been horrific as of recent, even on powerful PCs.

owlfalls35

I don't have any issues when playing at 40 render distance on a 4k display with the window maximized and antialiasing set to 1. If I put it in full screen, there is mouse delay (MCPE-98861). It only preforms well when vsync is disabled. When vsync is enabled, my framerate is a lot lower.

migrated

Hey, I may have the same issue as you. Try launching the world in airplane mode

TheTamedWolf

This could be what is causing the lag along with obvious inventory/gui loading problems. The DuraSpeed on my tablet is restricting Minecraft. It says this happens "when cpu or memory resources are so tight that it affects system performance." I hope this info is useful in some way.

1.20.50

migrated

Same issue in 1.20.60 (exact version: 1.20.62) for iPad 10th gen with an A14 chip.
Minecraft gets consistent lag spikes when playing and worsens whenever there’s more than one player in a world, especially when attacking each other.

It’s not an iPad storage issue. I played with 70% of my internal storage empty and it still lagged. However, emptying Minecraft’s storage alleviated the lag a little.

migrated

Can confirm that this is happening in the latest release 1.21.
I'm here running a super flat world and the lag spikes are consistent and unbearable. It happens every few seconds.

legolloyd2009

still happens
