Some pretty stupid things get marked WAI on here IMO. Why on earth would this be intended behavior? Some things I'd understand doing this - stairs, slabs, and maybe doors. But we should be able to place transparent blocks like fences, gates, and ladders above paths; there's no reason not to. Hell, I could make a mod to fix it in about 20 minutes - it's literally just changing from checking if the material is solid to if the block is solid, or even allowing either, so it's not (or at least shouldn't be) WAI because "we don't want to bother fixing this".

If you're not going to make this change, can you at least tell us why?

I think this is another problem entirely - the problem isn't being caused by the piston not updating to the observer's signal. There doesn't seem to be any signal at all. Note the name and steps of the linked bug - "powered through blocks", which you can clearly see in the screenshots is not the case; rather, the observer is watching the chest through a block, thus the problem is happening at the observing end rather than the output end.

I only found one instance of server lag being recognized... I do have a lot of command blocks running though. Even knowing the code as well as I do, you probably have more experience in this area. Sorry to have bothered you about it. Feel free to lock/delete this.

As it turns out, the animation is simply shorter than the time necessary to drink it, and as my sound was off I couldn't tell. Still needs fixing, but it isn't as severe as first thought.

Sadly, log files can't tell you everything - the fact remains that the download stopped in the middle and refused to continue. I was unable to use the snapshot until I finally repaired my launcher no less than 3 times; it people can't play the game, they won't want to bother trying to fix it just so they can play it.

I admit that the conditions are not optimal (no obvious steps to reproduce, for example), but this should still be looked into to some extent (also, it isn't the first time I've had this problem, although never quite to this extent).

After some more testing, re-downloading the Minecraft installer and using the "Repair" option fixed the problem. However, this is probably still something that should be looked into.

Ok, so, I'm not sure why... Turns out it was a problem with a resource pack that had an empty pack.mcmeta file (don't ask...). I have no idea why that caused this, but manually removing the resource pack in the options file fixed it.
