Dirt path and farmland turn into dirt when placing certain transparent blocks on top

Grass Path and farmland blocks turn into a dirt block when putting non full blocks over them.

Affected are:

  • signs (you can put them on pressure plates, why not on grass paths?)

  • torches (maybe you should be unable to place them on grass paths in the first place)

  • fences/fence gates

  • doors

  • trapdoors

  • ladders

  • stairs

  • slabs

Fence gates should be an exception, though, right?

Roadsguy

Yeah, fence gates, wall signs/torches, etc. shouldn't do this...

Matthew

Why is it intended for grass paths to turn to dirt when a fence gate is placed over them?

Here are some google image results for grass path with gates, proving they are a realistic thing that shouldn't be awkwardly blocked in the game:

Some pretty stupid things get marked WAI on here IMO. Why on earth would this be intended behavior? Some things I'd understand doing this - stairs, slabs, and maybe doors. But we should be able to place transparent blocks like fences, gates, and ladders above paths; there's no reason not to. Hell, I could make a mod to fix it in about 20 minutes - it's literally just changing from checking if the material is solid to if the block is solid, or even allowing either, so it's not (or at least shouldn't be) WAI because "we don't want to bother fixing this".

If you're not going to make this change, can you at least tell us why?

Andy (Romaq) Smith

More than a year. Still WAI, still no answer. This is particularly annoying where we place signs over a grass path. Fence gates, same. Is there a process to request a revisit for stupid WAI's?

Tyler Keohane

Go ahead and add barrier blocks to that list. They are invisible to the end user, so it shouldn't change blocks around it when placed.

Fence gates no longer cause grass paths to turn to dirt. 18w46a.

What about trapdoors? It is important too!
