@Kinga Izdebska It hasn't happened since. You guys must have fixed it.
Retracted pistons should not be able to be waterlogged. Extended ones should. When the waterlogged extended piston is retracted, it no longer becomes waterlogged. This bug makes it a massive pain in the neck to build automatic kelp farms.
Kill it with your elytra. (I hope that you have elytra by now.)
Fly at it, hit it, turn around, firework, hit it again.

I'm a modder. Did you mess up the texture of the trident entity? Or if you are using an app make sure it doesn't default the trident texture to black.

I'm a novice behavior pack creator, so I can fix this issue myself. I still think it is strange and shouldn't be in game. (Though it does bring up some farm ideas.)

That's intentional. Time for a geeky explanation.
Entities are things in the game which move. Mobs, flying arrows, and dropped items are all entities. Entities tend to despawn (disappear) after a little while, which is why your world isn't covered in creepers after a few days and arrows stuck in the ground vanish after a while. Items also despawn.
