Did you switch from creative to survival mode?
In the bug I reported, MCPE-185336, an issue I occasionally had on Switch and iOS, friends wouldn't show up as online despite the fact that they were and in a world. 😞 I have also been able to join world from servers in the past, which apparently you're not supposed to do...? I don't really know but I both have and have not. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@GreasyBat735419 This bug has existed in updates past but it was normally infrequent. Normally on Switch but a couple times on Xbox.
And I have joined servers via the friends tab in the past. I don't know if that's a bug within itself, however. I've done it very recently, as of the Tricky Trials update.

@GreasyBat735419 I'm confident at one point in time you could, I have joined a featured server in the past via the friends tab.
The bug is not exclusive to servers, this applies to actual worlds as well.
I attempted doing this on Android (Samsung Galaxy) and created a skin using the character creator. The expected result occurred, with the face item appearing with an equipped helmet.
This action was taken prior to the 1.21.1 Hotfix, but was taken in Minecraft Beta without experimental features.
This is definitely an issue I have experienced, especially on Xbox and mobile. All of my character creator skins poof out of existence or back to a default character (usually Alex, Kai or Efe) but all of my classic skins still exist.
