This may be unrelated, but I have a render distance of 2 chunks and when I go into new ones, I find entities in large amounts. I have found squids that are in packs of 12 or more when I haven't loaded the chunk before and same with bats, zombies, creepers, you name it. This is all in 1.14.3
I haven't seen this with endermen, wolves, sheep, cows, or pigs though.
