This appears to be because the mob is showing to the client as being somewhere else. Not only can you be attacked by these phantom mobs, you can find them standing still somewhere else...where you cannot interact with them at all, nor do they move.

This is happening also with villagers. If you place multiple beds next to each other, the villagers will lay down and then ZOOM off in what appears to be a random direction, and at that point be lost to you. They will still be attacked and killed by zombies however.

You can resync the mob positions by logging out and logging back in, at which point they will all reappear exactly where they should be.

Annette - it's not that they are eating them, but when they land (from flying, which they do constantly) they make a huge THUD, and the tremendous weight of their mammoth like body destroys the crop as well as the tilled ground underneath them. I am not sure that there is a mechanic for non-thuds, but if there is not there needs to be. Birds just do not make earthquakes as they land...with the possible exception of an Ostrich. Their touch-downs are ... dare I say? Feather light. 🙂

When the game crashes if you are riding a horse, the horse, armor, and saddle are not saved. This is clearly a bug, and it's a problem, as it takes a VERY long time to find a high speed high jump horse, and it shouldn't be destroyed just because of a game crash.

SAVE THE HORSE.

This just happened to me on 1.2.1 (Windows 10), and I lost the only good horse in the game

This is NOT invalid, when the game crashes if you are riding a horse, the horse, armor, and saddle are not saved. This is clearly a bug, and it's a problem, as it takes a VERY long time to find a high speed high jump horse, and it shouldn't be destroyed just because of a game crash.

SAVE THE HORSE.

This appears more prominent if you have your parrot sit, then log out then back in. They will no longer be sitting.

Confirmed that in 1.9pre4, still unfixed. Just had skeleton horses spawn naturally with lightning, and clicking on it with a lead just mounts instead.

Going up and down hillsides also causes stored-up damage to horses. Even if they are just single block descents. Just took a donkey up the side of a hill and back down the same way it came. sidestepping so that it went down slow, and dismounting took most of its health.

I've been killing horses for a while this way. Does not seem to be dependent on jumping as just a long ride will do it. More, jumping does not seem to work. Instead of jumping, the horses just neigh and rear back even when at full trot, and do not jump up at all.
