My issue was not the gravel, but the error in extreme hills that do not spawn hills, just flat bits of rock.
Also affects 13w21b. However the issue is that signs that are placed do not cause a block update. Tested with a bud switch, breaking a sign does cause an update.
This is spit out when hitting esc in a ghosted world.

Advanced opengl is dependent on your graphics drivers and card. Did it do this in 1.5.2?
I personally haven't experienced this at all.
Reproduced in 13w21b
do the following.
/scoreboard objectives add Health health
/scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar
Log out then, log back into the world.
Then,
/scoreboard players reset [tab]
game crashes.
It tries to access a name that is invalid, the game creates a "ghost" when you log out. You will see an empty slot with a 20 for health in the sidebar.

Update:
The crash only happens if you set the sidedisplay to display health. After quitting the game, a blank player will appear and then trying to bring up that player's name using tab will cause a crash.
Sooo.... scoreboard creating ghosts that then cause the crash?
I thought the recipes were in, this is my bad, i should have read more. My apologies.
go check out an ocean for that matter. I doubt that is intended.
