This seems to also happen when a minecart (any type) activates a Detector Rail. I will edit this comment if I find any other occurrences of this error.
Can confirm, happened to me. May be happening with other mobs as well (I've had villagers despawn twice now).
Edit: OK, this is strange. I was playing on a multiplayer server when this happened. The server rebooted, and now the cows (and villagers) are back again. I'd like to test this some more, but it may be difficult to reproduce.
That does seem to be the intention of the message. Still, you don't really want debug messages in a final release, so better to catch it now than 1.9.
I switched to 64 bit Java, and I no longer had this issue. Went back to 32 and it was back.
Observed on a vanilla server I run on both the snapshots leading up to 1.7, and 1.7.2 realease.
Confirmed happening with barrels. Breaking them also seems to cause the same problem. I have also had this happen with hoppers. Unfortunately I wasn't around to see the event itself, but it caused the server to go into a constant crash loop (probably because it's trying to modify its inventory).
