In version 14w33c, I get a smooth experience when running or walking on a newly created or already existing world. It is great. Now, in version 14w34a and 14w34b, I get a consistent choppy lag when I run or walk – in the same world.
To test I do the following:
1: Create a survival world with the seed "Test Choppy" in version 14w33c.
2. Run or walk towards the ice spike biome. Great smooth experience.
3. Now load the world in 14w34b.
4. Run or walk towards the ice spike biome. I get a consistent jerky/choppy lag spikes.

Confirmed after testing

Confirmed 😞

Confirmed on our server.

Confirmed here too. Also when looking with the mouse it sometimes feels like the game is "missing" mouse events, and you dont turn as much as you think you have.. it kinda forgets about the occasional mouse event.

This issue still persists in snapshot 14w34c unfortunately. I've noted it in the "Affects version" item.

I really don't want to use my old backup, I just got a new music disc! Ignoring it. 😛
Edit: Wow, 15 votes in like, 1 day?!

Confirmed

This issue has been fixed (for me at least) in snapshot 14w34d. Any others have no lag now?

Fixed for me in 14w34d!!!
This specific bug doesnt seem to be addressed as a "fix" but it seems to be gone.

I will mark it as fixed, reopen can be requested.

Ahhhh the missing block fix is broken again!

Fixed for me as well 🙂

Be sure to check for this bug in the next pre release or snapshot, as Grum might make a change which could re-introduce this bug.
https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-62166?focusedCommentId=193340&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-193340

The exact same bug reappeared in 1.8-pre2.

Confirmed that this is now back for 1.8-pre2. It was OK for 1.8-pre1, so some change has affected this again.

I think a missing block sometimes is much better than having lag ALL the time.

I can confirm that this is back in 1.8-pre-2. In pre-1 my survival world was running very smoothly and it was really nice. Now it is choppy and annoying. Riding a horse amplifies the choppy lag significantly.

Back in 1.8-pre2 for me as well. Although it's unstable FPS this time. (Last time the CPU load went up to 100%, while FPS were fine)

I've been having the unstable choppy fps since 12w25b... And it wasn't fixed in the 14w34d snapshot either

I'm running 1.8-pre2 vanilla server. The video display is jerky or rather pulses, (like speeding up and slowing down). When strafing (walking sideways) the effect is much more noticeable. The pulse about two to three times per second.

Still a concern in 1.8-pre3.

Confirmed for 1.8-pre3. Added it to the affected versions.

I have an Intel E8300, 6GB RAM, 7200RPM HDD, and a NVIDIA 9800 GTX+. I too get really bad stutter and framerate fluctuations when walking around in pre-2 and pre-3. Pre-1 seems fairly stable for me.

On my computer the lag is there but it is not too noticeable. It is probably worse for some people.
As someone who has never seen the effects of MC-62166 personally on any of my computers or hardware, I would rather have this lag bug fixed instead of keeping an attempted fix of MC-62166 that doesn't even seem to fix it completely.

I havent this drops since the new versions, but i saw that by youtubers already but please try that:
-Go to the minecraft graphics settings and try to turn clouds off and VBOs on/off.

That doesn't help in this case.

Doesn`t help too, it`s their code problem not settings.

Now the question is which one is going to stay. This one or MC-62166? Pre-release 2 and 3 are almost unplayable for me, because of this one.

This is a bug tracker, not a Forum.

That's why there's comment section.

There are quite a few people who are just complaining about this issue, but this is not the purpose of the tracker comment section.

@Galaxy_2Alex
Then tell us what the purpose is instead of leaving everyone in the dark. I'm sure some people would like to know.
Does it serve any purpose other than to confirm existence of an issue? If so, then why is it even here?
What exactly is the comment section supposed to be for?

@Jono They just complaining about duplicates, instead of looking at the topic problem deeper and discuss, find solutions and REALLY find the same reports if they are exists. Sometimes it`s really hard to explain what happend in the game when the game doesn`t have good instruments for user debugging, for user tests etc. I understand, small company i know i know. But the game huge, and frustration huger when you have issue, and BUG TRACKER and you can`t send a report because it`s will be ignored.

I just found out that at least in my case there is a massive difference in fps between using Java 32bit and 64bit.
When I don't move, the game runs with ~130 fps (Intel E8400, nVidia GTX 260 (216 Cores)). View distance is 12 chunks.
When moving/flying:
32bit: 20-60 fps
64bit: 50-100 fps

Yes, but the isse that's discussed here is the same in 32 bit or 64 bit Java.

I switched to 64 bit Java, and I no longer had this issue. Went back to 32 and it was back.

Tried out 64-bit Java. It seems to at least limit the effects of this bug for me.
Anyone having this bug should try downloading the latest version of 64-bit Java (provided they have a 64-bit OS of course!) to see if it improves the issue for them.
EDIT: I used the latest version of Java 8, not Java 7 if that matters.

I've only have the 64-bit version of Java and have had this problem with every 1.8 snapshot.
Turning off VSync and setting everything else to max has fixed the problem in pre-release 3 though.

just fix this please! I cant play minecraft when it's like this 😞

Confirmed.

1.8 released and it`s still not fixed.

Running 1.8 vanilla server: Affects 1.8-pre3, 1.8-pre2. Win8.1 + fast computer + Nvidia Gtx 650 TI + latest 64bit Java.
The video display is still jerky, like it speeds up and slows down. I expect it to be smooth and flowing. To test, I walked through a previously explored desert with minimal items to render, Cacti move past me in small jumps or pulses. It does not matter if I sprint, walk, or sneak. the pulse still exists.
At night, I'm getting getting 71 to 98 fps with aprox 72 entities. This is not your typical server lag. It does not matter if I run, walk or sneak, I get the same little pulse about twice per second. In the plains biomes the pulsing is much worse and I get 60 to 89 fps
At my base with aprox. 250 entities, the pulsing is very noticeable, fps fluctuates between 50 and 85 fps
For a comparison, I copied the map and opened with 1.7.10 server. In all biomes video is smooth, (no pulsing). In the desert above, I'm getting 96 to 140 fps, aprox. 78 to 88 entities.

First I'll just reiterate what others have said, that 1.8pre1 was great, but 1.8pre2 reintroduced the choppiness, which was still present in 1.8pre3 and 1.8 (final).
Previously I was testing new versions as they were released and then returning to 1.8pre1 so I could play. But with the 1.8 release, 1.8pre1 (as well as 1.8pre2, which I don't care about) is now gone from the launcher.
Could 1.8pre1 PLEASE be added back to the launcher, since it's the last playable version for many people?

I didn't play any of the pre-release's, but I can say yesterday before the update everything worked fine for me and this morning it's too choppy to play.
Please provide me the option to play the old version at least until you get this bug fixed.
This is happening to us on on our server and on our single player.

1.7: constant 70 fps
1.8: 50 fps. When moving: under 15 fps

1.7 = 30+ fps.
1.8 with the performance 'boost' i get micro-stutters/choppy fps when on a server.

This probably relates to MC-45458.

Installing Java 8 has completely fixed this issue for me. In fact, it has doubled my FPS overall within Minecraft. I downloaded it from the Oracle site. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

DetachableMonkey, is there a way for players to fix this problem who don't have access to Java 8 (More specifically, players with Windows XP who aren't able to update their OS).

@pianoboy8 Unfortunately, upgrading to Java 8 is the only method that has worked for me so far to eliminate the awful choppy lag when moving. If you have Windows XP, you will have to wait for Mojang to fix this issue in the code. I know they can do it, because everything was working in 1.8-pre1, but then after that, things went sour.

Tested with Java 8 no difference for me.

this is happening to me, the 1.7 had about 80 fps render normal and all settings on high without optifine, now I have 15-20 fps but seems to occur only when you are walking or running, if you can get to stand still the 100fps or more ,I need a solution, this leaves me to play minecraft 😞

I also tried Java 8, no change. CPU usage maxes out as soon a world starts to load and stays there.

Attempted java 8 as suggested above, no change..

What OS/hardware are you guys running? 1.8 on my old laptop (core I5 dual core, with basic 6700 series ATI card, 16 gig of ram, and windows 2008R2 server edition) im getting over 160 fps with 10 view distance. There has to be something else going on here. Java 7 64bit.

Here are my laptop specs, for reference:
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 2.00GHz
4 GB RAM
NViDIA Quadro NVS 140m (128MB dedicated VRAM) (driver 340.66)
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Upgrading to Java 1.8.0_20-b26 64-bit has fixed the choppy lag issue.
Averaging around 50-60 fps with Fancy, Maximum smooth lighting, All Particles, Clouds OFF, VSYNC OFF, VBO's ON, Render distance 6, MipMaps OFF.
When first loading the world, framerates are low. Let the world load of a few seconds and then it's fine.
Make sure that all previous versions of Java are uninstalled before installing Java 8 64-bit.
Java 8 32-bit DOES NOT fix the issue for me, only 64-bit.

For the people this is effecting I have a question. How many cores does your processor have? I have an older intel processor which is only a single core. Could the now use of multithreading be the reason for this problem?

Matthew, I have a quad core processor and it was affecting me until I uninstalled my previous Java versions and then installed Java 8 - 64 bit.
http://products.amd.com/(S(4yy4cs45u0lwws45sx5s2i2r))/pages/desktopapudetail.aspx?id=17&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
And my video card is: AMD Radeon HD 6550D

Perhaps same problem with different reasons. I did unistall Java 7 and installed Java 8, 32 bit for me because of my system. Yet the problem is still there.

I have Intel Cor2Duo E6850 3.0GHz (2 cores) and Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti. The main problem is that before PRE releases and final release on latest snapshots it was so much FPS boost. I had 60-120 stable smooth FPS. Now it`s become choppy/laggy and i can`t play from PRE anymore.

An update from my perspective. It seems to be mainly running or moving in a boat. Walking is usually "ok'ish". I've tried installing Java 8 on my windows XP (it's possible), but it only helped a tiny bit and introduced some weird artifacts, so I had to revert back to Java 7. I'm using a 32bit OS though, so that's in line with what other people have mentioned. If I put render distance and lighting as low as I can, I'm able to play. Sort of.
I'm running Dual Core 3.2GHz, Nvidea GTS 250, 4G RAM and Windows XP. I've seen people with a different spec and OS complain about a similar issue though. It seems to be a 32bit or 64bit with Java 7 issue so far, or does anyone still have the problem with 64bit and Java 8?

Bram,
i am on a 64bit windows 8 computer 8gb ram Radeon HD 8330 quad core, I completely I completely uninstalled java to make sure all versions were removed and installed 64bit java 8- still problems.
Under your launcher profile you can set it to launch the game with older versions of minecraft stored on your computer, not playing 1.8 is the only way I can play.

What AV are you using?
Have you tried deleting the entire folder and starting from scratch (after backing up your saves)?

Thanks for confirming Alec, looks like that is a dead end then.

There is something very bizarre with this bug. Two people with nearly identical systems can have vastly different frame rates, which doesnt make any sense as the minecraft jar is the same across the two systems.
The normal troubleshooting steps are:
make sure video card drivers are up to date.
install the latest version of java after uninstalling the old one, and upgrade to 64bit if you can.
delete your minecraft shortcut and create a new one.
make sure your power profile is high performance (especially on laptops, this is vital)
disable all background programs with msconfig and reboot.
backup the entire ".minecraft" folder to another location, and then delete it, and redownload it from scratch as it will redownload all the libraries.
make sure vsync is off in minecraft settings.
try fullscreen/windowed to see if that changes it.

We will investigate this issue on this Reddit post: http://www.reddit.com/r/Mojira/comments/2foad6/mc45458_mc68080_finding_the_possible_cause_of_the/
If you are experiencing this issue, please look at this post so that we can do further investigations.

Hello, I've had the same problem but it was fixed when i removed my 3D resource pack, so if anyone from Mojang reading this should test that themselves, it may be connected to the resource packs and that maybe the reason why only some people get it. Also my pack was an older version I'll try a new one with this new release.
Thanks Subeedei.

Because we are almost sure that this bug is caused by water, I am (also) posting this here: @unknown is trying to fix the immense water lag at http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2k3rg6/water_woes/cli9h2k.

@matthew a. Nickerson
mine was 99% water issues.
Installed optifine, turned off water movement and partials and while there is still some lag every time a water chunk loads in it's MUCH less- barely noticeable really AND it makes the game finally playable for me and my whole group again.
For what it's worth I recommend anyone having this issue to at least install the optifine mod and try.
If it doesn't fix the issue for everyone- I have either been following the wrong topic since 1.8 came out or it's more than one single issue.

Optifine not a greatest solution, it`s almost the same like playing with older versions. Minecraft need to be better optimized, i can`t understand what they are doing all the time, so long time. Company, that has so much money can`t hire specified programmers for optimization and just do it like it need to be. Now i see, that feature programmers doing optimizations, it`s the worst in development.
Will see, i still hope. Thank you anyway.

When running optifine for 1.8 the jitter (not to be confused with frame rate lag) is almost gone.
I've become convinced the problem is tied to memory and possibly Garbage Collection.
While water does seem to be a problem, many hundreds of particles below water may be contributing to the water problems, jitter is something else entirely.
Press F3 and watch memory allocation cycle from 9 to 10 to 11%. The period of this cycling is exactly the same is the video jitter I observe.
As I walk through my base video noticeably starts and stops and is very jerky.

Still the same in 1.8.1 pre-4, update please.

If I can offer any insight, I am experiencing this problem and believe it to be related somehow to mouse movement. If I move the mouse quite slowly, there is no stuttering; but if I move it quickly, as I usually will, the stuttering is immense, making the game unplayable. This can also be demonstrated even on the start screen; the blurry background will stop rotating if you move the mouse in quick arcs and lines, and resume once the mouse pointer stops moving.
If this helps, here are details for my system:
Windows 8.1 Pro
Java 8 64-bit
nVidia GTX Titan
Cyborg MMO7 Mouse
All drivers up-to-date as of this post.

My game loads perfectly for the first minute and everything is smooth, then the screen jerks every 1 sec for about 10 secs, then it returns to normal. Then in less than 20 seconds, it starts jerking again with framerate dropping to the same rate as before, which is about 1fps or less. This keeps happening since 1.8 and my game is now unplayable. Lowering my graphics settings to minimum did not help at all. I have updated to java 8 64 bit for mac countless times to no avail.
Mac OS 10.10
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
This has never happened in previous versions. The game was perfect in the previous version.

Still the same in 1.8.1 pre-5, update please.

FWIW: While testing an unrelated issue on unrelated software, I had to disable Intel's SpeedStep technology in my BIOS (CPU kept throttling well below nominal speeds even under high-demand in this other program). Afterwards, when I noticed significant improvements in that program's performance, I ran MC on a hunch and am no longer experiencing this issue. I don't even know why SpeedStep was enabled by default on a desktop machine (not like it's on a battery, and electricity's only $0.10/kw-hr), and I certainly don't know why the CPU was not going full-throttle under heavy load, but it might be worth anyone else exploring on their own system.

And still the same in 1.8.1, update please.

I registered to this so that I could comment that I am having the same issue. I have been playing since Beta but now I can't because of this "input lag". I am fine if I don't move but if I move one step using my mouse or keyboard ... forget it .. yet FPS seem stable enough. NO changes in video settings seem to help. I am going to try disabling vsync in MC vanilla now to see if that helps.
Okay turning off Vsync in the video settings in MC itself did not help me..
Also trying out the "Test Choppy" version trick did not help neither. I am not entirely sure the issue is the same as the OP but it ONLY happens in MC and never happened before 1.7.10 ..

If anyone here is on Windows and has this issue, be sure to try out the new Minecraft Launcher:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2pkxpx/we_need_your_help_testing_the_new_minecraft/
It does not require Java to be installed on your computer.
It might give some performance improvements for some people, or it might not. But it doesn't hurt to try it 🙂

Same in 1.8.1, however not only in Ice Spike biomes.

Tried the new launcher. It did not improve anything unfortunately. At this point I might just stay with 1.7 forever...or at least until I upgrade my PC.

Is this still an issue in the current Minecraft Snapshot 15w47c or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

This issue forced me to quit the game since I was mostly playing on realms. I will try to reinstall and check it somewhere next week.

@unknown: Realms is still on 1.8.8. The 1.9 snapshots are only for single player / multi player.

I will try them out if I find the time. The realms I was playing on have mostly died since I quit.

Kumasasa , I tried both 1.8.8. and the new snapshots. I'd say that both are a significant improvement from before. It might just be me, but the snapshots seemed to give me a lot faster chunck generating and thus smoother running experience. It's both very playable compared to when I last played (the early 1.8 versions). So I could actually play the game again if I find a new fun realm. Thank you for that.
So as far as I'm concerned, this seems to be resolved. I can't speak for everyone ofcourse.

Ok, is that resolved for others too ?

As mentioned above, it was resolved for me when I disabled "Intel SpeedStep Technology" in my BIOS. For some reason, my Core i7-4920k was not interpreting high demand from the game (or possibly from Java) as any reason to boost the clock to nominal speeds – it continued to operate as if the machine were idle. I do not have the details to know if this is something wrong with SpeedStep itself, with Java, or with the game.

Guys, change your power settings to "maximum performance" and see if the lag goes away.

Resolving.
I can confirm this.
