Set up two pistons with four blocks in between.
Put water in the center two blocks (one block above the pistons)
Put Magma blocks under the water.
Put soul sand in front of the pistons.
Push both pistons at the same time.
One of the pistons gets pushed back.
There is an unknown block appearing for a few frames. (see attachment)
We tested this on East-west orientation.

If you use /setblock to place a bubble column manually over a normal block (rather than magma or soul sand), then push a piston into it, you'll find that it does in fact get pushed by pistons (and then becomes water due to block updates and noticing there's no magma below it). This makes it very clear to see what's happening.
Confirmed. Affects snapshot 18w10d.
Bug where when pushing a piston into a bubble column(s) the blocks in that direction of pushing can also be pushed.
Video demonstrating the issue.
Weird, they use the unused "debug" test texture...
...And its the "Unknown Block" texture. Why its there? Why its not a normal missing texture or just water?!

Confusing explanation, could your provide a screenshot of the setup?
