I tested this just now, and it seemed like the entity I pushed the glass block into just took damage because it was pushed by the glass block, but didn't continue to do so once it stayed in its head.
I can't reproduce this bug in 19w12b.
I can confirm @violine1101's observations. Mobs still do take damage when the piston extends, but not afterward.Â
