Held Items are black hile riding a Minecart / Boat

People may already understand this, but for anyone who doesn't, the reason everything has a shadow is because the player is sitting slightly lower in the minecart than they should be. Because of this, they are sitting slightly inside the ground, which causes everything in the players view to appear darker, as if they were in the shade. You'll notice a similar (but not as dramatic) effect by walking under a tree.

Also happens when riding a boat (but the sky doesn't darken as much, since water isn't completely opaque).

Same issue as MC-47713. Once a block has been placed over the minecart and destroyed light level goes back to 0.

For the record this seems to be caused by the lighting calculations being based on feet location instead of head location like it used to be. That was an intentional change (people were complaining about the block light value in the F3 screen being wrong) but it's caused about 12 other bugs. MC-50875 ("Can't see up thru clouds" effect starting 1 block too high) is also caused by it.

Still have this issue in 14w30c.

Behaviour seems to fit the "feet hypothesis" as light returns when riding downhill.

Holger, if you're still having the issue, we're going to need a world save to reproduce it, because I myself cannot reproduce it using a flat track in a Redstone Ready superflat world.

sky turning dark confirmed for 14w34d, black items is fixed afaik

1.8-pre2 Horizon still turns dark when entering a minecart.

This also happens when walking on half slabs in a certain way.

1. Make a 3x3 slab of ONE half slab, so that you stand 0.5 blocks higher.

2. Place another 3x3 half slab 'slab' AS LOW as you can when you are on the first slabs.

3. On top place a 3x3 slab of solid blocks.

The end configuration should look like this, and each layer should be 3x3:
Solid Block
Upper Half Slab
Air
Lower Half Slab

Standing in the middle causes items to darken.
