This can be extremely hard to do at times, but it is possible to fly in creative mode faster than chunks can load. This eventually will make the game lag a lot, but it hasn't ever crashed on me.

Confirmed
bump
I've seen this. Chunks unload but don't load. You can actually drop to the ground and go and sit right on the edge of the chunk, at which point you start vibrating like the game thinks you might be falling but keeps putting you back on the terrain.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Try placing 100ish or more tnt carts on a single rail, then push them off while flying or jumping (for vertical acceleration).
Obviously, this issue still occurs in 1.8 with the spectator mode introduction
Still in 10c
Confirmed for 14w11b
I see this all the time when I teleport to unexplored land (although the chunks do load eventually). The blank blueness is just part of the adventure. Try teleporting 1000 blocks away to see it ("/tp @p ~1000 ~80 ~0"). Then again maybe the fact that I'm on 32bit Java is making that transition take longer.
Chunk load is now faster in 14w17a.
Huh? It seems to me that in 14w17a, very low priority is put on loading and rendering chunks. The framerate is fantastic, but if I just float in the air doing nothing, the game will happily ignore rendering and prefer instead to give me a good framerate.

Fixed in 14w30a/b.
I saw this all the time before 14w30a when flying around, then again i get like 20 FPS with lowest video settings (and my video settings are always as low as they can be)
Uh, 14w31a anyone?
Note that the screenshots I attached show this with both render distance 2 & 32 (and 10).
This could obviously be related to many other render tickets, but this one seems to fit it best.
i have got the same problem and i'm on 1.8
Confirmed in 1.8.1.
