On a fresh installation, when clicking "Play", the launcher starts downloading the client (Currently 1.14.4).
It fails with this error message:

Exists: FileDownloading this file manually with curl worked, in less than 2 minutes (And now it blocks on fastutil-8.2.1.jar).
I have a 2663 kb/s download bandwidth (As announced by the modem) and the connection is likely unstable. It is very unlikely that it dropped under 30 B/s for 60 seconds long, though.
The filesystem where the launcher is downloading files (/tmp) is of tmpfs type, have a size of 4GB and a used space of 4%. Thus, it's unlikely I'm hitting a disk I/O throughput or space limit.

Hello! We're sorry you're experiencing this problem. In order to diagnose the problem, we need to look at your launcher log file. It's called launcher_log.txt, and can be found in your Minecraft folder. Please attach it to this bug report.
Im having the same problem my internet connection is fine and its wired its never happened to me before ive tryed reinstalling the game and everything i dont know what the problem is please respond asap
I'm bringing a follow-up on this (Although I stopped playing the game).
I just ran a download on a fresh installation ($HOME/.minecraft deleted) and on an updated launcher (2.1.13509) with a slightly modified environment: I didn't encountered this issue. It might have been fixed on a previous version.

[media]Hello, the Minecraft Launcher has been getting minor tweaks all year to improve downloads. We did a bigger fix for it when we released Minecraft Dungeons Launcher (MCL-14110) by increasing the time the launcher waits before giving up.
This issue should now have been resolved, so I will go ahead and close it.
Please do not mark unreleased versions as affected.
