Cant join servers, 'name invalid'

And Yes im in the Newest version of Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta.

Hey @unknown we don't have any new information about when this bug will be fixed sorry.

Also having this issue; gamertag has spaces in, and Xbox want $9.99 to change it, which isn't an ideal situation 👎

Windows 10 - 0.13.2

I've been struggling to get my Minecraft Windows 10 Edition to work with my Xbox Live gamertag. Every time I try to play the game online (MCPE and MW10E servers) I get an error message: "Please choose a valid username". My gamertag is "Sem Games", and I am 100% sure that the problem is due to the space in the middle of it. Please, fix it! It's very effen annoying to have to use my brother's account to play the game (his username has no space and no special characters, it's just a regular username).

Just contacted MS about this issue to see if they could shed any light. I'm waiting to hear back for sure, but they told me:

I see. It seems, that you'll be needing to change your gamertag here. I'm currently checking on alternate solutions. I think Mojang could handle this one, you don't really have to pay for a gamertag change just to play the windows 10 Version of Minecraft.

We have a lot of gamertags right here with spaces and it seems unfair.

Hoping to see this resolved one way or another.

According to Microsoft the bug with spaces in names was fixed after 0.12.0

So if you are trying to connect to a server that is pre v0.12.0 when the spaces were not supported this error will occur.
Also if you will try to connect to PocketMine server, you will also encounter this issues, as it is an unsupported server.

There is no reason, other than some unsupported characters, for a gamer tag with a space to cause this issue when joining supported servers.

Oh ok. Well one of the servers I attempted to join on my android tablet was on 0.14.0. I could join if I changed my name so it had no spaces, but if I added spaces in it wouldn't connect.

I'll try out a few more servers with windows 10 and see if I can find a server that isn't pocket mine. (no clue here, I'll investigate)

OK, case in point, the Hypixel server doesn't use pocketmine, and advertises as being compatible with Win 10 (I know nothing about the server, just came a cross a larger one!)

Does Hypixel PE use Pocketmine?
Hypixel PE instead uses a new technology which is developed by Gurun called MiNET combined with what we call HyPE. An easy way to think of it is that MiNET replaces the Minecraft server and HyPE is Bukkit!

EDIT: Also tried joining this server on an android tablet running 0.13.2 - If the name had spaces it would not join, removed the spaces, connected perfectly.

I can't really get any further unless I know which servers are supported, do you have that information?

You either have to remove the space or delete the name and retype it. It is not possible on Xbox Live but this does appear to be the solution for players on other platforms. If this issue still occurs I am afraid you are connecting to unsupported server and there is nothing we can do about that.
We can't reproduce this error.= in any of the recent builds.

^ This is the bug that needs attention then, as currently a significant number of players can't join any server.

The problem of those players is not Xbox Live functionality - we do not support external servers.
