I am using an iPad 10th generation with a keyboard and mouse connected via CalDigit Soho dock. I am able to play the game just fine using the keyboard and mouse with default keyboard and mouse settings. BUT as soon as I press the escape key to go to the game settings, the mouse no longer works in the game AND the touch screen no longer works to control the game. I have to close the app and restart it for the mouse and touch screen to work again. The problem does not occur if I just use touch screen to press the pause button on the screen GUI to get to the game settings. The escape key seems to the be issue. I tried a different keyboard and got the same result. It also occurred in the previous version of iOS and previous version of Minecraft. I tried updating both to fix the issue, but it persisted. Thank you in advance!

I was just told that this is a 3-pin connector problem, those three circles on the back or side of your iPad. This is something you would have to talk to Apple about

This escape key issue does not involve a keyboard that uses the 3-pin smart connector. It only uses the USB-C port to connect to a dock that connects to a USB-C mouse and USB keyboard.

it has nothing to do with your mc version. its the ios version. IOS 16.2 screws up the game and i get same problem. I have to swipe up to get the app dock thingy, then press on the resume button, and then do it again and i get control. then I have to move it with touch, and then mouse mouse and it works. IOS 16.2 and 16.3 is the problem. our only hope is the next mc version fixes it.

its the ios version. not the ipad or keyboard, or mouse or mc version.

I have the same issue
Here is my video about it https://mega.nz/file/Hs9kHK5B#NHe0VWCKebR4rtFGlAdeP6ZzYnQlYnYeDShYMo7C9-s

Hello, so the iPadOS 17 Beta is now available. I tested this today with (Developer Beta 1) and unfortunately the problem with the “esc” key persists.
It seems like the fix will indeed need to come from Apple, since Mojang either can't or doesn't want to do anything about this problem.
For what it's worth, I reported this problem to Apple under the feedback number FB12272068.

Affects 1.20.10

After doing some testing, the issue is also sometimes triggered when exiting out of chat

I’m having the same issue on my 5th gen iPad 12.9 (iOS 17.0.1). I think it could be related to iOS gestures, but I’ve been in touch with apple support and they seemed confident it’s a compatibility issue specific to the Minecraft app.
I’ve been getting by so far by swiping upwards to enter App Switcher, then clicking back into Minecraft. Not the best, but the mouse seems to start responding again without completely tabbing out of the game and having to rejoin.

Mojang could fix this if they allowed us to map any key to the 'escape' function. But idk if they will do that because that might be hard to implement.

Same happens with me using Bluetooth mice and keyboard using iPad 9th gen
Mouse: EVGA X20
Keyboard Apple Bluetooth keyboard without numeric pad
iOS 17.0
Please fix this mojang 😞 i thought my keyboard was broken, spent $40 on another and that din’t work

Same here geez...and this is a problem for this long? Wow.

For high-end iPads a fix is to enable Stage Manager in Control Centre, as then when you click the mouse cursor works again
As for this bug to be fixed entirely, Mojang needs to rework how the cursor lock API is handled or something, I can't really say because I'm not a programmer

Affects Minecraft 1.21.71 and Minecraft Preview 1.21.80.25. I play on iPad 10th generation with original Apple Magic Keyboard

CookieCft, thank you very much, your method with stage manager really works
I am getting the same result; I’m using a 4th gen iPad Air with the Smart Folio keyboard and Magic Mouse, I replaced caps lock with escape to fix my problem of being unable to access the menu but then discovered it also disables my mouse upon opening the menu
