After upgrading to the 1.20.10.21 (or prior) version, the game has terrible frame rate drops and constant lag. The odd part is that it seems that Minecraft Bedrock runs smoother than Java on older/slower devices but when you have a powerful device, Java runs better. It's like Minecraft Bedrock wasn't designed for higher-end devices. I have a mid/high end gaming laptop with an RTX 3060 and Ryzen 7 5800H, and I was previously able to run Minecraft at 600-900fps on 8 chunks standing still. However, after the update, I'm now getting way fewer fps in-game, and the main screen has lower fps than normal as well. In menus such as the main screen, word list, settings, etc, I used to get around 1500-2000fps. Now the menus are barely hitting 300-400fps. This is a huge drop in normal fps. Opening chests, inventory, and pretty much all UIs have some stuttering as well. If I even try to hit 96 chunks of render distance in the game, the whole game crashes. I also tested something by getting my friend to join my world and SHEESH. He was literally so laggy he was teleporting across the world, with no smooth animations, on the LOWEST graphic settings. This is unacceptable, and I know that many other players are experiencing the same issue. I get around 1800fps in Minecraft Java but WAY less in Minecraft Bedrock. Minecraft Bedrock just feels so slow, laggy, and glitchy when moving around while Minecraft Java feels super smooth. I thought Bedrock was supposed to be the more optimized version. Apparently, it's not anymore.
Average fps for these menus [Note that these tests may be different than what you get due to different computer specs, environment, and more]:
Version | Main screen | Settings menu | Achievements New UI | In Game (8 chunks, looking down) | UI lag | Game start loading speed | Shaders in game |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

1.20.0 | 1689fps | 806fps | 2255fps | 614fps | Not present | 30 sec | N/A |
1.20.10.21p/1.20.10 | 900-1500fps | 368fps | 1698fps | 10-442fps | Present | 17 sec | N/A |
1.20.70.20p-1.20.80 | 900fps | 366fps | 1441fps | 10-564fps | Present, even in new UIs | 15-26 sec | N/A |
1.21.0.22p-1.21.0.23p | 898fps | 412-900fps | 421fps | 5-540fps | Present, even in new UIs | 4 sec | N/A |
1.21.30.22p | 876fps | 400-800fps | 532fps | 5-420fps | Present, even in new UIs | 5 sec | 1-67fps |
p stands for preview/beta. As you can see in the above graph, performance has only gotten worse over time with each Minecraft update. Game loading speed (Opening Minecraft and waiting for it to load up) on the other hand has gotten a lot faster in 1.21.0.23.
I've tried all of the usual troubleshooting steps, such as restarting my PC, reinstalling Minecraft, and updating my drivers. However, nothing has worked which is expected. I'm confident that this is a bug in the latest Minecraft Bedrock beta/preview, and I urge you to fix it as soon as possible. I know that many other players are also experiencing this issue, and it is making the game unplayable. I know that this is a beta but I beg that this update does not release in a public release before it's fixed.
Here are some additional details about the issue:
-The bug causes low fps, laggy menus, laggy UIs, frame drops, low fps, animations are not smooth, and more.
-The bug is not caused by any hardware or software issues on my end.
-The bug is reproducible by simply launching Minecraft after upgrading to the latest beta/preview.
-The bug causes significant frame rate drops and constant lag, even on the main screen.
-The bug is preventing me from playing Minecraft normally, and I'm sure it is also preventing many other players from playing.
-I understand that you are working hard to improve Minecraft, and I appreciate your efforts. I hope that you will be able to fix this bug as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
How to reproduce
1) Open the latest Minecraft Preview (Version 1.20.10.21 is when performance got even worse)
2) Notice that the fps is lower than normal in the menus (If you don't notice, compare the newest preview to an older one)
3) Open a world and notice your game is laggier than usual, and you are receiving lower fps (Test on low and high render distances/graphic settings)
If you can't tell the difference, disable vysnc and then see the difference in fps (Windows 10-11)
If you have an Nvidia GPU, disable vysnc in the Nvidia Control Panel. Go to Manage 3D Settings, Global, Vertical Sync. Set Vertical Sync to OFF, SAVE. Additionally, go into the Minecraft Preview folder, and in the options.txt folder set vysnc from 1 to 0 ("C:\Users%YOURUSERNAME%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftWindowsBeta_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftpe\options.txt"). (Directory will be different if you want to change vysnc for the release version of Minecraft) Now, open Minecraft Preview and if vysnc is still not disabled (fps is still capped at screen refresh rate), then disable full screen by hitting F11.

Here is Java vs Bedrock in the same world at the same settings, and as you can see, Java gets better fps:

Notice the Minecraft Bedrock Preview tests conducted in 26-50 render distance:

In the tests above notice how the CPU is being used FAR more than the GPU is. The GPU is being used between 4-20% while the CPU is being used between 73-100%! The powerful GPU should be used more than this. There is no balance currently between the components. For some reason, the underpowered CPU is forced to do almost ALL the work. The only time the GPU is used more is when RTX is enabled. This may contribute to the performance issues but I'm not sure.
Not to mention, Minecraft Bedrock is extremely unoptimized with the new shaders as well, not even playable performance:

ALL STATED.... This issue is present in the latest release and preview/beta.
Some Updates
Update #1: The performance got even worse in the 1.20.30.20 preview, and mind you, this is coming from a Mid-High end computer (RTX 3060 + AMD Ryzen 7 5800H). I get higher fps in Minecraft Java! Also, I don't know if this is part of the issue or not but, take a look at some screenshots I have provided, Minecraft Bedrock is using 100% (at high render distance, it's a leakage test) of my CPU while only around 0-4% of my GPU! That's at least one reason why Minecraft Bedrock is so laggy! It barely uses the GPU!
Update #2: Guess what? With the release of 1.20.30, the lag has multiplied. Opening chests, inventory, etc is super glitchy and fps has taken a further tank. This is unacceptable. This issue impacts my Computer, my Android tablet, and more. Please Mojang improve performance, this is unplayable!
Update #3: In the 1.20.50.23 preview, fps has dropped way more! The main menu now gets way lower fps and playing the game also has a lot lower fps. Man.
Update #4: Even the newer JSON-based UIs are very slow and laggy. Especially the new world list UI, it takes forever for all your worlds to show up. This is getting way out of hand.
(Latest) Update #5: The newer UIs (Ore UI) have gotten even slower and laggier in the first 1.21 preview.

Possibly the same issue as MCPE-171473 judging by the Mem. usage shown in
[media]. Does this affect the 1.20 release for you? Are you running Windows 11?
No, it does not affect the 1.20 release. Please read the report. The issue started in the preview 1.20.10.21. The preview before 1.20.10.21 was perfectly normal. Yes, I am running Windows 11 but I have 64 GB ram (Memory is at normal usage, no leaking) and CPU usage seems about how it usually is as well. I rolled back to the previous preview and it's fine, no lagging. It's an issue with 1.20.10.21+. They messed something up :/ This isn't the same as the memory leak issue because the 1.20 release is fine and the preview before 1.20.10.21 was fine.
This happens to me too, but with all versions of Minecraft Bedrock. My GPU (RTX 3070) usage sits between 1 - 50%, while my CPU (Ryzen 7 3700X) usage is constantly around 60 - 100% depending if I'm loading in new chunks. Ray Tracing only worsens this, and I get really low FPS because of it (50 to 20). I can use shaders on Java (10 chunks render distance) with an average of about 100fps.
However, the screenshots posted here don't seem accurate. On task manager (Under your GPU performance) select any dropdown and change it to "Graphics_1". Here you'll see that Minecraft is using about 20 - 30% of the GPU. Still nowhere near what it should be, though.

Hope this helps (a little bit!)
Note that I'm not on the preview version, so my figures might differ slightly to yours!
I only ever have between 0-4% GPU usage (except when running RTX, then GPU usage goes way up) constantly when running Minecraft bedrock while it's always using 10-100% of my CPU depending on render distance and other factors. Minecraft Java on the other hand uses the perfect amount of both CPU and GPU (both around 20-30% most of the time) and I almost never lag in Minecraft Java. This happens with ALL of my friends as well. I don't know for sure if this is causing all the bad performance but it's at least one of the issues. All I'm saying is that people used to say that Minecraft bedrock was the more optimized version but it's not anymore, it's constant low fps and frame drops, barley playable in certain situations, and I have a decent computer!

For now, I quit playing Minecraft Bedrock. It just became way too unplayable. I only play Minecraft Java now. I'm still waiting for them to fix Bedrock's performance though...
This issue also relates to MCPE-142934. I really hope it gets fixed, because Minecraft on Xbox One suffers from lag when opening chests and interacting with entities that have menus. I wonder if Render Dragon is also the cause of client-server desyncs, or if those are instead caused by autosave.
I also consistently get terrible performance in Minecraft Bedrock 1.21 when compared with Java Edition 1.21 on the same computer. Unmodded Java edition I get about ~100FPS consistently. Bedrock gets ~30 FPS and is very inconsistent (no ray tracing)
My specs:
GPU: RTX 3080 TI
CPU: i9-12900K
Memory: 64GB of low latency memory
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO
I have also quit playing bedrock for now. Even completely unmodded Java edition is so much more performant (which is insane)
Effects all latest versions of Minecraft Bedrock as of writing this. Minecraft Bedrock performance still is very bad.
Hi, I always have bad performance. I’m playing in a laptop HP Omen 16 with an Intel Core i7 12th generation and a RTX 3060 both for laptop. Even if I play with 16 chunks render distance, the game is always between 110 and 140 fps. The CPU usage is always too high, and the dedicated GPU is always low. I’m playing in the last version, Minecraft 1.21.82.
If you change the simulation distance from 10 chunks to 4, the performance increase but not much because it has fps drops constantly. Bedrock for PC needs a performance patch please Mojang… I don’t know how to fix this… Minecraft Java Edition works better even with the same chunks render distance and simulation distance. I even desactivate the antialiasing for Bedrock, and not change anything. I always loved to play in Bedrock because it always had better performance, and I don’t know what is going on right now with the game.
