Many people that play on Windows 10 used to install the x86 build of Minecraft Bedrock because it has no render dragon (Until 1.18.30 existed). The main reason many used to play on this version is because of the blatant performance issues, and input delay for literally any version with render dragon in it. This doesn’t happen anymore because of nearly every server changing their support to the more recent versions. The game just simply feels significantly laggier, especially on most servers. I have a pretty good pc, but I have an extremely noticeably weaker performance on any version with render dragon. In the attachment (bugreport33.mp4), I test and compare the performances of 1.16.100 (A version without render dragon), 1.16.200 (the first render dragon release), and 1.17.30 (the latest release as of the publishing of this report). Each version will be tested on the same server with the same map, a single-player infinite world, and a world with absolutely nothing in it, all with the exact same video settings. The FPS averages will be at the end of the video.

Update (made during 1.20.30): Render dragon for a while has been improved on RTX cards, and now the different DirectX engines can be toggled thankfully. An issue on many servers (and probably any medium resource-intensive scenario) is that I’ve been able to feel very small micro lag performance spikes many times a second. Once again, this did not happen when I used the older rendering engine. Lastly, entities seem to be the culprit of many performance issues as well.

Hi

Does this issue still occur after updating to 1.18.2?

This ticket will automatically reopen when you reply.

migrated

Yes, theres a server developer that removes render dragon and releases the appx to the public, that’s our solution, and it only applies to the windows 10 players, it being the 32 bit version of windows 10 edition.

migrated

@Maciej Piornik, with all due respect, what makes you think it could potentially not still be a problem? Has anything been done to optimize the game engine since it came out? People are flocking to the 32 bit version of the game now. We don't care about RTX, as if most of us even could get our hands on, much less afford such a graphics card. We are seeing performance degrade with each successive update. So yes, this is still very much an issue. My computer seriously struggles to run this game now on x64, and not even my beefy specs seem to improve performance that much. Its not our devices, its your engine. RIP android players in 1.18.20.

migrated

I just feel that every time the render dragon is activated me in the betas on android, the performance is unplayable, literally it runs me at a maximum of 15 fps, this render dragon garbage should not be in the game and less on android considering that no device android according to me that has ray tracing support

Brent101

Render Dragon isn't just for ray tracing one of the biggest components is the spectral effect which wasn't possible to add into bedrock edition using the old rendering system. This also expands into even more functionality that could be added into the future like colored lighting and so on. On most devices Render Dragon actually improves performance by a large margin but requires more power/resources.

Yes, this engine is terrible. On powerful phones, it lags and freezes. The release minecraft works perfectly, without lags, but on this beta version due to the engine RENDERDRAGON there are drawdowns and lags. I have a good phone. minecraft always worked without problems until versions with a new engine.

migrated

Render Dragon seems to be having more issues on 1.18.30 than other versions with incomplete rendering and major framerate drops, freezes when connected to servers, etc

I can confirm it is not hardware bottlenecks - Specs-

i5 10th gen

16GB RAM

RTX 3050

750 Watt PSU

NeoCyania

Bad fps and freezes every couple seconds when flying around since 1.18.30 update on a decent phone that always used to have a good performance in minecraft. Now playing the game is a pain because of the constant lag. Why can't it be optional to use render dragon? It already caused performance drops when it came to pc and now on mobile its even worse.

migrated

Affects 1.18.30. This update is special because now, nobody has a choice. Windows 10 players cannot use x86 in order to take advantage of the stability and better performance of the older engine.

migrated

In the aim of providing more information, I would like to add that after updating to 1.18.30, I began getting intense lag spikes every few seconds. This is on an iPhone 8 running iOS 14.8.1. In addition, it takes place not in a new world full of caves and cliifs, but rather this happens in a brand new FLAT WORLD. There is practically nothing in this world as it was just created and yet, while the player moves around, the player experiences massive lag spikes where the screen can freeze for milliseconds or up to a full second in my experience.

To reproduce :

  1. Create a new flat world in creative on an iPhone 8 running iOS 14

  2. Place blocks and build random structures while flying or running around.

  3. Observe the constant and obtrusive lag spikes every few seconds making play near impossible.

Observed results:

While playing in the least intensive type of world (flat), the game constantly gets lag spikes that make the game nearly impossible to play.

Expected results :

The player should not experience game disrupting lag spikes every few seconds while playing. This applies for all supported devices.

I am experiencing this problem on the Nintendo Switch. I am playing split-screen on a local world with the world owner (am player 2) but this also happens when the world owner comes close to my house with nobody else logged in.

I logged in, post-update, in my house that contains: 40 villagers, 20 or so fish, 1 cat and 1 dog, a bunch of about 20 or so other animals like sheep horses and chickens, 8 boats, 4 iron golems, 9 hoppers, 11+ double chests, with 11 full beehives nearby as well as a small farm (wheat, carrots, pumpkin/melon etc), + 15 bamboo and over 60 sugar canes. Also quite a few vines on the walls.

This whole setup was working fine before the update, only getting choppy when more than one player was in my house, or I was using the hoppers. It also got pretty bad that one time where I bred hundreds of chickens, yet it still never got as bad as it did after 1.18.30:

When logged in, the game froze for 1m10s to 1m30s at a time (timed it with a stopwatch), with it unfreezing for only 1-5s at a time.
During this time the music was playing fine throughout.

A person underwater will be dead by the time control resumes.

Here's what I did to be able to play again:

  • From the world owner account, which wasn't affected as long as I wasn't logged in, I reduced render distance to the minimum of 5 chunks instead of the default 12, and antialiasing to 1 (from 2).

  • On my account, painstakingly got to the underground tunnel connecting my house to the other houses on the world and escaped. It took like 20 minutes of the game being mostly frozen. Once I was out of the danger zone I could move normally.

  • Crept back closer and leashed the iron golems out of their boat at the front of the house, then took them somewhere else. They still made the game pause briefly around them every few seconds until they were dead, even when led in the middle of nowhere.

  • Crept back and mined all the boats.

  • I still cannot get close to the house, although I can get closer than before.

From the back of the nearby house, here's what I could see still rendering jerkily in my house, even as the walls weren't showing:

  • The villagers

  • The tropical fish

  • The bees

  • A boat (in my house that must be in the floor somewhere?)

  • The chests

  • The other animals, too.

The frame rate also dropped when the nearby farm came into view.

  • It looks like it's processing entities much further away than what it used to? Definitely further than it's rendering the walls around them.

  • Iron golems, who are permanently hunting for nearby entities, are definitely affecting the framerate.

  • Additionally, saving freezes the game for a few seconds every time (5-10s) It used to stop block updates for that time, but you could still move around. Now it just freezes the screen/controls althogether, although the game still proceeds: A person underwater could be dead by the time control resumes.

EDIT: There is now a separate job for the Switch freezes, MCPE-154110

I will transfer my comment to this job as it is more relevant there.

I'm on a 4 year old ipad and noticed this issue when trying to play on the minecraft server "The Hive". Before I updated to 1.18.30, my game was extraordinarily smooth for the most part and I noticed no device-related issues. However, as soon as I updated I noticed that when playing on the server my gameplay felt like 140 ping while I only had (and still have, and have had for months) around 70 ping (same ipad, same wifi, same ping, but different version giving me significantly worse gameplay). This shows itself as hit delay, random lagspikes that bring my fps down to 0 every few minutes, movement delay, and also kb just looks a lot slower when I'm hitting people. This makes pvp games feel practically unplayable, and thus I would appreciate a fix as soon as possible. Also logging in makes the game stall for almost a minute in the loading screen but with a vertical black bar on it.

Side note, I also own a switch and sometimes play on there too and the login thing is the same.

Update: I haven't seen the black bar anymore, but the game is still unbelievably laggy and my ipad gets very warm. I'm also wondering if it would be worth allowing people to downgrade back to 1.18.12 until this gets fixed to allow for mobile users to still enjoy the game while we wait.

migrated

@AnAbsurdly LongName, I also had unbelievably snooth gameplay in the Hive. But when 1.18.30 came out whenever I joined hive a black vertical line appears a second on the screen before joining The Hive. Then the game starts to lag a LOT.

update : i deleted the biggest app on my phone and its still laggy.

I'm using Minecraft on Nintendo Switch. Before version 1.18.30 was also slow and lag sometimes, usually when saving data to the disk but in acceptable conditions. After upgrading to 1.18.30, everything was super slow, and lag almost every few seconds. And then after a few minutes, the game was crashed about 3-4 times in a row, it happen not so long after the game started. The crashes happen when I was walking up the 2 blocks of stairs. I think around my 5th attempt then I have managed to get passed that killing zone to the outside of my chamber. After that, I was going into my aquarium (underwater), and suddenly the game was frozen for about 3-10 minutes (I think it should be around 7 minutes). After the frozen was ended,  I was drowned to death. Hope this helps

SIsilicon

Decided to do some testing with my Samsung A01.

On a fresh survival world, the FPS settles at around 40 FPS, which was actually better than it used to run before 1.18.30. What I'm observing is that the FPS drops when new chunks are being generated, at about 20 FPS. I think that's something look into.

Will do further testing later.

Hello, I have recently found out that people with certain nvidia cards released circa 2020<, in combination with 120hz+ screens they are not affected by this lag. I have tested this by plugging in a 144hz monitor at a store to my laptop and suddenly the input lag was gone. I am still getting degraded performance though, ranging around the 100-120 range.

I am on windows 11 latest release, so are the people I mentioned that have nvidia cards.

migrated

This bug was referenced in the 1.18.31 hotfix changelog. Performance is still more or less the same (poor) with the Render Dragon engine, even in with the hotfix. So just want to reiterate that this still affects 1.18.31.

migrated

I'd almost say its worse with 1.18.31. I hadn't been getting the black bar or the massive lag spikes for a few days (it was just consistently bad all around, but still consistent ig) but now its spiking again and hard.

Edit: please note that the vertical bar could be due to the server being on a later version. The lag spikes could be attributed to that as well, although i experienced SEVERE frame droppage in singleplayer as well as massive amounts of delay. The delay is on the servers too, btw.

Second edit: I just had a 1 second lag spike where trajectories of things in-game seemed to speed up (someone was 3 seconds away from me and then the game lagged for under a second and then they were on top of me) so my theory is that the game is trying to process everything without messing up but it takes a bit longer than the gameplay actually does to do that, so the client and the server start to slowly drift apart and then the lag spikes are when client catches back up to the server fast.

On my Android phone, when I'm in the end and on the edge between the outer land and the 1000 block void gap, and I look away from the blocks (into the void), then the frames are normal, but often interrupted by short lag spikes. The lag also disappears when I go high up in the end. But in the overworld, the lag still persists even when I go high up. (1.18.31)

This happening on 1.19.0.28 beta and 1.18.31 on infinite world type and mobs. Using 12 render distance, VSync and fancy graphics + smooth lighting drops to 10 FPS. Unplayable for infinite world type and i only play flat world. Lag mobs is unplayable too. Hard to play. Its also happens in the void worlds.

Windows 10, 8-core i7 with RTX 3060 (very powerful machine) and lags and stutters all over the place. Went back to non-renderdragon version and fps all good again. Except no more RTX shots 😞

migrated

As of the last 3-4 days, my ipad has been running very smoothly in 1.18.31 with lagspikes only once every half hour on average. However, the delay is massive. It feels like theres a 1/3 of a second of delay from when I tap the screen and when the circle shows up (its not like this in other apps and it wasn't like this pre 1.18.30) (also swiping takes longer to register than normal, also also my ipad is still getting very hot but only when playing minecraft). Also frames drop considerably when around any other entities with a large increase in stuttering the more entities around me. All my settings are set to optimize performance other than fov (render distance 5 chunks, smooth lighting off, fancy graphics off, etc). This is annoying, could we maybe get an update without renderdragon so we can still enjoy the game while the good people at mojang fix the issue?

Update: While playing on The Hive, my device performance seems similar to pre 1.18.30. I'm not sure if Mojang did anything, if The Hive staff did something, or if the kinks just worked themselves out, but this feels a lot better (a WHOLE lot better, the game actually runs smoothly and stuff) than on 1.18.30. I play on an 8 year old ipad air 2 and relog about every 30 minutes because my frames start getting choppy. Also, I've only ever crashed when I got pink glitch post 1.18.30 whereas before I would sometimes crash for no reason, so good job to Mojang. 1 thing I will note is that there is still a larger amount of imput delay (around 1/4th of a second compared to the 1/7th pre 1.18.30) but its very slight and I'm ok with that right now.

NeoCyania

1.18.31 did not fix the low fps and frequent freezes on my phone. However I tried disabling vsync by editing the options file and that actually helped a bit to get better and more stable fps (the same method gave me better fps on pc as well). The freezes every few seconds when flying around or walking sadly persist. The game did not have these extreme freezes and fps drops prior to 1.18.30 and it seems to be caused by loading chunks (in a normal survival world with some builds and entities). While moving around the fps constantly fluctuate anywhere between 50 to 5 with freezes happening every 2 or 3 seconds. When just standing still and looking around there are no freezes and the fps are good. In a empty flat world there aren't any freezes or fps drops at all even when flying. Graphic settings are the lowest it can be.

Device: 2 year old Samsung Galaxy A51, 4 Gb Ram, Android 12

I hope this issue gets the attention it needs. On most devices performance suffered from render dragon, some more some less.

NeoCyania

I did some more testing regarding the freezes on mobile when moving. They pretty much only happen when the world is hosted locally on phone, when I join the same world that's hosted on pc there are basically no freezes at all and much better fps when flying around. The world is around 500 mb size and chunk loading seems to be causing a lot more lag/freezes on local worlds since render dragon came to mobile devices.

AlexMc

Can anyone confirm if the 1.18.32 hotfix fixes this issue?

migrated

I received the 1.18.32 hotfix in my Android device. From my experience, I got a little higher FPS than the previous update.

migrated

I recieve the patch, Everything is smooth now thanks mojang.(My Device is Samsung A50s 4gb, 64gb). But one thing is that when flying and moving fast sometimes the game will freeze that's all I experience in this patch hoping it will fix in the official 1.19 update.

Sa1tBoat

I can confirm that 1.18.32 improved performance on my device too. However, stuttering in the comment box still happens sometimes.

migrated

There was a slight improvement in 1.18.32 but there are still these performance drops whenever the player runs or flies fast. I tried it on 2 different devices (Motorola moto e5 play 1GB ram) and one (Motorola one, 4GB ram) and it happens in the same probability on both devices.  The probablema could be the load of fragments at the moment that the player is going very fast either flying or running.

migrated

Device Honor 9 lite. Dropped from 60 fps on 1.18.12 to 7 fps on versions with renderdragon.

NeoCyania

Performance on Samsung Galaxy A51 4 Gb has improved with 1.18.32. Fps are generally higher now and flying around causes a little less frame drops/freezes. However the freezes when running around or flying still happen but less frequent now. Loading in chunks fast is still laggy and chunks render in slower than it used to be before render dragon was introduced.
Standing still the fps are 50-60, no problem. Simply start walking and load some chunks and the fps fluctuate too much (sometimes full on freezes, other times just unpleasant fps drops).

Something needs to be clarified:
Reading the comments I realized that:
Some people who complain about this issue have a really bad low-end device and it is completely normal that on those devices the game does not run at 60 fps. I mean, renderdragon decreases performance even on powerful devices That's a big problem, but on low-end devices This is normal And I doubt that even completely removing renderdragon the game will run perfect, developers can't work miracles to get the game running at 60fps on all existing devices. I'm talking specifically about Android,
In my experience you need a device with at least these features for the game to be (or should be) smooth:
RAM: 4GB
ROM: 64GB
Processor: at least a mid-range one (Sometimes even having a device with these features or higher the game does not run smoothly and that is why this issue was created)

But if you have a device with a low-end processor and 1gb ram it is impossible for the game to be smooth

NeoCyania

Of course the game is never going to run well on very low end or super outdated phones, that's to be expected. The issue is that even on a decent pc the overall performance became worse with render dragon: less fps, slower chunk loading, very annoying input delay, CPU gets used way too much compared to Java Edition while the GPU gets barely used. For reference see the video in the attachments of this report, it is the same result for me on pc.
My specs: AMD Ryzen 5, Geforce GTX 1650, 8 Gb ram
Render dragon needs more general performance improvements so we hopefully get a performance one day that at least matches the old engine. For a big part of the playerbase render dragon has only downsides as they don't have rtx capable devices and the engine just causes them extra lag and input delay.

migrated

Of course, we know that the game will not work perfectly on old or perhaps low-performance devices, and this is nothing new. Even before adding Render Dragon, the performance was low, but not like now. You can play a little smoothly. The phone does not overheat ( MCPE-154289 ) .There are no graphics problems in the remote areas (the problem has been resolved) and also problems when selecting non-full blocks.( MCPE-102808 Block highlight is displayed incorrectly on many blocks) and crashing.
The game was rather good, but after adding the RenderDragon it caused big problems to the point that we no longer play the game waiting for RenderDragon to be deleted or improved.

Since using Render Dragon, chunks load much slower on my PC.

I noticed this happen alot more often near redstone.

migrated

I notice a lag spike when in a raid and reducing render distance doesn't help

migrated

Ok so I'm aware this has been addressed multiple times but allow me to condense basically every performance issue that I've seen thats yet to be addressed by Mojang or given any sort of feedback updates apart from a few minor lag fixes on 2 of the many platforms Bedrock edition has.
Render Dragon is a good rendering engine for those of us who have a beefy device. The people that can run Ray Tracing shaders (which is its original intention from what basically everyone is aware of as we've not really been given a reason otherwise)
I have a 6 year old computer that runs pretty low-grade but still functional software and hardware. when everyone was able to use the HAL rendering engine, I had no performance issues, My game ran smoothly, I could even push my Hardware to be able to go to 100+ chunks of render distance, Using shaders, and other things.
Render dragon has crushed performance, and since its code isn't made public we're unable to fix things or increase it ourselves thru external clients, mods, etc.
For example I have 2.5GB of RAM on my very old PC. Whenever I use 1.18.12 on the x86 (32 bit) version, my memory usage almost never goes above 700MB of RAM in-game at max settings with shaders and a 64x texture pack on. Swapping over to Render Dragon version of 1.18.12+ (This also affects litterally EVERY Render Dragon version since its creation) makes my computer use 1.75 GIGS of RAM in the MAIN MENU on LOWEST SETTINGS. I have like half a second of input delay, and am not able to do most things effectively. On top of the Pink Glitch after about an hour of playing (where all textures turn Pink), overall performance for low-end devices is completely different and a ton worse than it was on HAL. On top of all these issues, My game crashes consistantly, I can never have more than about 40 fps on Render dragon (on lowest settings possible) when I could get a clean 200+fps on HAL on Max settings with 0 performance issues.
I'm aware that Render Dragon is good for people that have the RTX Enabled graphics cards or very high-quality systems, but everyone else that doesn't their entire devices are going to just suffer because Mojang refuses to fix a Rendering Engine thats not worked properly at all for almost 2 years. On top of this but when I'm IN the menu it takes like 2 minutes to open ANY menu. When I restart my game, it takes like 2 and a half minutes to go from the bright red start screen to the Black loading screen, and 2 more minutes.

In condensed version of this. The main bugs from this:
-Complete performance decreases
-Lowered fps even on lowest quality settings
-Textures turning pink over gameplay. The "Pink Glitch"
-Immense input lag, causing a lot of the game to be extremely difficult to play.
-Crashes, Lag, FPS Drops, Freezing, etc at random times
-Insane Loading times for menus, Main Menu, Pause Menu, Options Menu, etc.
-Highly increased memory usage for peoples RAM, As well as peoples Gpu and Cpu suffering.

As much as this Rendering Engine is good for the 1% of users (Likely not even that) that play Bedrock Edition on main that have High Quality graphics cards, and RTX Cards, Its complete garbage for all other players that have to suffer thru this complete garbage rendering engine.
The biggest suggestion or fix I can offer for this is to make Render Dragon an "Opt In" feature. It was fine working in the Beta programs because it was only focused on the people that HAVE the RTX Cards. Make the Render Dragon a Slider thing that will turn on when you turn on the RTX setting. Otherwise using HAL would probably be better for the wider audience. As much as I know Mojang likes this Rendering Engine and thinks its the "Future of Minecraft", Its going to be the Bane of it in the long run given its been 2 years and the wider community has been suffering since its release.
The only other thing I can think of is just completely fixing Render Dragon which Mojang seems to just not want to do, Either out of laziness, work load with the 1.19/1.20 update, or that the massive performance issues for the people that can't afford to upgrade their devices just don't matter to them because they don't get Money from those people. They get money from the people with RTX Cards and all these nice devices, so they cater to that 1% instead of the 99% that don't.

All in all, Either fix your Rendering Engine, or stop forcing this completely broken rendering engine on EVERYONE. I shouldn't get 12 fps and almost a second of input delay on any server I join because Mojang refuses to fix an issue thats BEEN an issue for 2 years. Please fix this. Its been on the top 10 Bugs for 2 years. I value Performance over a new Horror mob, Lore music, and a flying hopper. Please fix this. I can safely say I'm speaking for everyone when I say we don't like how this Rendering Engine decreases performance, causes insane amounts of lag, etc. Sorry this is a bulky Comment but I'd rather this be on the actual Render Dragon bug report than get Botted and have it closed for being a duplicate. Fix it mojang we're all tired of waiting. We don't need the Warden, we need our Frames back

migrated

Performance on my 2021 desktop PC has been absolutely terrible, the frame rate fluctuates between 40.0 FPS - 60.0 FPS and on occasion the game will randomly lock the frame rate to 30.0 FPS when looking at certain block entities/mobs. I doubt this is my PC specs performing terrible considering I can easily run Minecraft: Java Edition with no issue. Previously in the x86 builds of the game this wasn't an issue at all. Everything ran perfectly smooth with little to no graphical errors.

SIsilicon

Maybe this is an issue unrelated to renderdragon. When the game autosaves, it freezes badly. Perhaps that has something to do with the update to the world saving mechanics (likely an attempt to get rid of the disappearing entities bug).

migrated

Same problem here it all started when this render dragon is added instead of making the performance better it just make it worse. (Btw im on mid range android phone) I even tried lowering my Chunks but still lags (the lag happen when im loading chunks like running and walking)

Did 1.19.0.32 fix thus issue?

migrated

Fixed on 1.18.32 (for android devices)
They may expect better performance on some certain devices and fixed issues with rendering on nintendo switch

Here is the changelog:
https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/6031356127117-Minecraft-1-18-32-Android-Switch-

Android users can download minecraft here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mojang.minecraftpe

This still needs to be fixed on these devices:

  1. Windows 10

  2. Controller (Includes xbox, playstation, nintendo, and more)

  3. iOS

migrated

Fixed on switch and may even be smoother than pre 1.18.30 (no empirical evidence just a feeling so idk how reliable it is) but still VERY bad on ios touch

migrated

When I turn on THE WILD UPDATE, mincraft is laggier. Please do not turn on the wild update.

It turns out that switching to Dx11 with a render dragon build increases performance immensely, at least on Minecraft for Windows. Why does Mojang insist Dx12 be used when it was implemented so poorly on bedrock? Is it possible for the developers to introduce a toggle to switch to Dx11 for a future build of Minecraft for Windows? From what I can see, Dx11 is still supported on the client, it just needs to be activated.

migrated

I can confirm on iOS. Even tho iOS doesn't have task manager or an app like that, I am 99.9% sure that the game lags, freezes, and then crashes because CPU reaches 100% like on Windows. Servers such as Galaxite have extremely intense animations which increases CPU until the game crashes.

migrated

IMHO, nothing close to “fixed” on the Switch.

Performance on both single player and local multiplayer on Switches with plenty of device space, playing vanilla, with the game optimized, with no add-ons, and on a new world with almost nothing going on is (still) shot.

Lag is everywhere and in everything I / we do and saving and chunk loading takes forever and it renders - haha - the game almost unplayable at times.

migrated

I run 90fps (1.18.31 + vsync on) with significant input delay on renderdragon while playing hive skywars. Without renderdragon (1.18.12 x86 + vsync off), I run around 300fps on the same map with absolutely no input delay.

Main Specs:

Intel i7 8700
RTX 2060

Those specs ($1200 PC) should not be only producing 90 FPS with 100ms input delay (rough estimation) on a pixel block game. Unacceptable.

Might also (in certain ways) be related to a DirectX 12 issue, as my GPU supports it, and render dragon forces that directx version.

migrated

@ice, MCPE-98861

Turn off vsync for renderdragon engine to remove input delay.

migrated

pat_, thank you, vsync being on used to be slightly better than when it was off, at least in my experience. Though, one thing that I have observed is that when my framerate is lower, there is more input delay, meaning that I still get slight input delay even when vsync is off. Also, when my framerate is capped, it tries to produce fewer frames than it really should, meaning that it barely meets the certain FPS cap for some reason. Though because of render dragon still, I get around half the FPS that I normally would, and one of the issues may be that it's forcing dx12 on my PC.

migrated

I can't even turn off vsync in 1.18.31 right now

migrated

I'm using 1.18.33 on Nintendo Switch, single player world. Despite recent updates, travelling by anything other than walking (boat, horse, elytra, etc) makes game practically unplayable. I don't see any issues with frame rate – the main issue is with loading chunks. I have render distance set to 5 chunks, and still have issues.

See video here for example.

Happens on the very latest 1.19 preview version of iOS, but not in the latest version of the official 1.18 game. Chunks won’t load and game starts lagging on the preview. It hasn’t been fixed in the 1.19 preview.

MCPE-156328

migrated

Affects 1.19.0. The game is unplayable, you can’t join enjoy 1.19!

NeoCyania

1.19.0 on Android and the game still lags a lot when loading chunks. Massive fps drops in worlds with a bunch of entities (chests, mobs) in one area. Loading in areas with builds and entities while running or flying is a slideshow even on lowest settings. The issue is only that bad on a big world (500 mb) that is played locally on the phone. On servers or worlds hosted by other people it is a lot better. However before the render dragon update loading chunks never caused such an extreme amount of lag.

migrated

Note: this has gotten worse after 1.19 as now chunks load significantly slower and I experience more lag in general gameplay consistently under similar conditions. Also, blocks within a chunk that get changed can take multiple seconds before they show that change (ie they get broken, the game shows them as still there even though I can walk through them), etc. I notice this in both my single player survival world and on servers like The Hive (Block Drop is most effected, and there was no lag before 1.19 in that game). Also I get more short (1-2 second) freezes in general.

A bit of hypothesizing: It feels like Mojang saw that the RenderDragon was taxing the lower-end devices way too much and just decided to slow down rendering, and while yes my iPad has not gotten as hot as it did immediately after 1.18.30, the change still makes the game feel almost unplayable.

A note: I also play Minecraft on my switch sometimes and none of these problems are effecting the switch version, maybe that information could be of help.

migrated

Try to clear your cache kids. Mine gets soo insanely high like 3GB.

NeoCyania

For me clear cache makes no difference on my phone. Still the same lag and freezes when I load chunks.

I attached some images comparing idling in a flat world between 1.18.12 x86 and 1.18.12 x64. I had to test in 1.18.12 because it was the last version that included the old engine in its x86 builds. The results are as follows:

1.18.12 x86:

  • fps average: 1350-1450

  • memory usage: 265mb-275mb

  • cpu usage: 10-15%

  • gpu usage: 28-32%

1.18.12 x64:

  • fps average: 600 - 700

  • memory usage: 740mb - 750mb

  • cpu usage: 20-25%

  • gpu usage: 18-22%

I have a rtx 3060 with 6gb of vram, 32gb of 3200mhz ddr4 ram, a ryzen 7 5800h cpu with 16mb cache running at ~ 3.9ghz

The graphical settings I had on for this test were 10 chunk render distance, all anti aliasing off/all the way down, smooth lighting, and fancy graphics on. I am running windows 10 build 19044 and a dx12 capable device

migrated

Having many entities and mobs normally cause lag spikes even before the implementation of the Renderdragon, but now just even having more visible blocks on the screen would cause lag (looking up to the sky prevents the lag) as if the screen is looking to a tremendous amount of entities/mobs.

migrated

This is just initial testing, but the new 1.19.2 appears to have better performance on my windows 10 RTX laptop. It used to drop to a crawl in certain areas, which now doesn't appear to be the case anymore (even though still dropping slightly, but way less noticable).

So am interested in hearing everyone's opinions on this.

SIsilicon

Not much performance boost on Windows (already runs pretty smoothly actually), but there appears to be some improvement in chunk loading on Android.

1.19.2

migrated

I went back to the non-renderdragon version in the end. There were still areas on my map that would just be unplayable....again: powerful hardware (RTX).

On my less powerfull, non RTX desktop I have no problems, which leads me to believe it might have something to do with my RTX card?

I might try playing it (with low render distance) on my internal GFX card to see if I get the same drops.

NeoCyania

1.19.2 on mobile (Android) the performance is still really bad and the game freezes all the time when loading chunks. Was never a problem with the old rendering engine. Everyone i know who plays on mobile has problems with low fps, freezes and chunks loading slow. Performance is just so much worse on mid to low end mobile devices that it kills the fun for a large amount of players.

Mineliver

It's weird, the performance is a lot worse on my RTX 3060 card than on my last low-end vega 3 card. Does Minecraft bedrock not support it correctly? On Minecraft Java, I receive way higher fps with the iris shaders mod.

migrated

There might indeed be something wrong with RTX 3000 series card....I didn't even enable the RTX itself....

migrated

I'm having literally no problems in 1.19.2, idk if anyone else is experiencing the same. I'm on an ipad air 2 btw, touch ios.

Mineliver

There's something wrong with Minecraft bedrock and RTX graphics cards. I'm receiving lower fps than my brother with Vega 7 graphics in most cases. It's SUPER aggravating!!

migrated

This is happening to me on 1.19.2 on my Surface Pro X. I'm limited to max of 7 or recommended of 6 render distance. Even with fancy settings off, I'm getting hitching, stuttering, and poor fps.

migrated

I'm able to reproduce RenderDragon performance issues on my iPad Pro 2021 iOS 15 Minecraft 1.19.2. Turning off vsync helps with the lag and stuttering if not the framerate  but some lag and stutter remain. Excessive mobs and minecarts (things with collision detection?) seem to be part of the problem, looking away from them helps a lot. Complex redstone hurts FPS regardless of looking at/away. Fill a large area with observer clocks and redstone lamps, or 100 wandering traders, and it's lag city. I find it playable at 17 chunks, with low FPS in areas with lots of mobs and redstone like my main base which has a zombie farm with sorter and villager trading hall, zombie piglin farm with 4x sorter, double smelter with minecart feed, potion brewer, lava farm, two micro crop farms, double slime farm with three minecart lines, and two strip mines with sorters. It used to play great at 24 chunks, a little slower around the base but not this bad. I made some minor improvements by pruning unnecessary mobs and minecarts, including eliminating my infinite minecart storage system for gold nuggets. Fare well, sweet prince. I'll probably start knocking out some redstone next. Although even then it's kind of slow when looking at a big complex cave system, so part if it seems to be just rendering lag with complex models.

Mineliver

It's weird! When a lot of items are on the ground and I'm looking at them, my frames per second drop very low. But if I turn away and don't look at the items, I don't experience as much lag (Lag still definitely remains though) Even with no items, mobs, or anything in the world, I get very low fps. I have a very good processor and graphics processor so I don't understand the problem. Ever since I got my RTX 3060 and Ryzen 7 5800H, I've been getting worse framerates in Minecraft Bedrock than in Minecraft Java! In most aspects, I don't think that it is fully renderdragons fault, it's also poor optimization for newer CPUs and GPUs. This terrible performance must be fixed or I'm moving back to Minecraft Java and will no longer support Mojang in the future.

migrated

I use a eight-year-old HP Computer with NVIDIA GTX 750, Intel i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz, and 32GB RAM Memory. It was a decent budget computer for me to run games in a moderate and balanced setting with VSync technology so my graphics do not suffer on high utilization and decreasing lifetime.

I am running on Minecraft x64, where Render-dragon renders for Minecraft. I am expecting weird stuttery frames while in-game it feels delayed in my perspective, and there are no problems with it, and I found out why this happens. TL;DR because of a high render latency.

Visualize this. Your graphics card is like a factory that produces details and creates them frame by frame on your screen. Their job is to box each frame and deliver it to the display monitor. The game rendering engine gives blueprints to your graphics card and renders details of the game. But the rendering engine can instruct the graphics card on how much the FPS or resource usage depends on what or how much they can send. The render latency is like a conveyor belt that moves the box to deliver to the monitor.

With the latest engine, Renderdragon "improves performance" and adds ray tracing support to all ray-tracing capable devices. But for me, it is just cheating to improve performance. The way to cheat for performance is to cap the rendering latency into 16ms and sometimes 31ms. And while the old engine (HAL) does not cap at all. It is unpleasant for PvP Players, even for a few people, and high render latency ruins how smooth the game is.

I tried to test both 1.18.12 with two different rendering engines, HAL and Renderdragon, with the same settings and NVIDIA's Ultra Latency Mode on and how many resources were produced by CPU, GPU, and RAM. Here are my results with it.

With VSync ON

HAL Graphics

With VSync OFF

The way resources are wasted by Renderdragon more than HAL Graphics is poorly optimized and needs to rely more on both CPU and RAM while VSync is off. It was disappointing to me how Renderdragon is stealing your resources, forcing on every device, and does not support shaders. Even my bug report is said "resolved" by a bug tracker bot since I need to come to this bug report to give information, so I did. I will appreciate it when Mojang repairs nearly all problems with the issues with Renderdragon, such as lag, glitches, etc. So the only two solutions for me are to use versions that features HAL Graphics until nearly all servers do not support 1.18.x or stay on the latest version that has Renderdragon.

migrated

I belive it has something to do with RTX cards and/or DX 12. I get worse fps on my rtx 3060 (ray tracing disabled) than I did when I played on intergrated graphics on an old 2011 era i5 with shaders, when they were still suported. It's not a small difference either. My laggy base runs 35 fps average and my old pc ran 54. Render distance is the same as I was playing on realms and I havent done much to impact the lag.
It's just a guess but it may be something to do with the move to DX 12 as my old machine couldn't run it. If anyone knows a way to force the game to use DX 11 please let me know. I'd like to test the framerate using both backends just to see what's best and if it's the cause.

migrated

Since the person that posted this issue is using an RTX capable card and everyone in the comments with RTX cards is complaining, I think it's safe to say that this problem is related to MCPE-111547 The reason people with RTX cards and a few of the GTX 10 Series cards have this massive performance hit is because they have ray tracing features enabled. A couple of my friends with non RTX capable cards never drop below 165FPS. Meanwhile people with high end RTX PCs are dropping to as low as 10FPS in some scenarios... I am not exactly sure what is enabled that's causing it because I didn't notice any visual difference with renderdragon on or off, but there should be a disable button for ray tracing or render dragon should be removed until the problem is fixed. This performance hit is really noticeable in larger worlds that have lots of chests/hoppers in one area(I get about 50FPS at my base because of my auto sorting storage room while my friends are above 165FPS), a lot of mobs in one area Ex: piglin gold farms(I sometimes drop as low as 30FPS), items on the ground and worst of all high resolution texture packs. If I tried to use a 128x128 texture pack and threw 5 items on the ground, I would drop to about 20FPS. If I were to use a 512x512 texture pack on a non renderdragon version or use a GTX 1660 TI(non RTX capable card) on any version, I could throw down 100 high resolution items and only lose a couple of FPS.

Please fix this problem soon. It's been 2 years already.

migrated

No. It's not specific to RTX cards. My surface Pro X runs a Microsoft SQ1 processor based of the Snapdragon 8cx. It has an Adreno 680 iGPU. That's not an RTX card and yet I still have problems. Where before there weren't any. People on iPads and android have problems too. My phone that has a Snapdragon 888 in it only gets max of 22 chunks, recommended of 12. Where as just a short year or two ago I could get upwards of 32 on my note 10+. This is a bigger issue than RTX cards and telling mojang that it's only RTX cards will ruin our chances of getting this fixed for everyone who is having the problem.

Mineliver

It's not only render dragons fault. Partly and partly not. I have an RTX 3060 and the Ryzen 7 5800H. Both very good hardware. I switched from the render dragon version of Minecraft bedrock to the without render dragon version and I only got about 10-25 extra fps. I get about 340fps on 5 chunks of render distance in an infinite world, but it drops a whole lot while moving around. Minecraft Java in the same exact world, I get 967fps with 8 chunks and the fps stays around that mark. Why is Minecraft bedrock performing so much worse? Well, I've done multiple tests and Its some incompatibility with any newer GPUs and CPUs and bad C++ code optimization. The code needs to be refreshed to support all the newer hardware that's coming out. Again, It's not only render dragons fault! I've also noticed fps dips a lot when over 5 mobs are shown.

Still affects 1.19.10 on my iPad pro. Performance is noticeably better with vsync off but still worse than pre-renderdragon.

migrated

I don't know if this is a useful contribution but i think MCPE-111547 might be related to this

A similarity between these issues is that people with RTX graphics cards and some GTX cards are the ones experiencing the low performance

migrated

@Nicholas D'Annolfo yes I completely agree. I have also mentioned the same thing, but some people responded saying I was wrong.. These 2 problems are the exact same because the guy reporting this problem is using an RTX card. If he didn't have an RTX card, his performance would be fine for the most part.

All the other people WITHOUT RTX or GTX 1070-1080 in this discussion are having completely unrelated issues to people with the previously mentioned cards...(the 1080 was released in 2016 so its quite an old card. its unlikely that newer hardware is the problem here).

The problem with renderdragon decreasing performance because of mobs, items on ground and in item frames, chests/hoppers and high resolution texture packs is because all RTX cards and the GTX 1070 and above have ray tracing features that can't be disabled without downgrading your Nvidia driver to disable RTX completely or removing render dragon(which as I know of, isn't possible anymore).

Anyone can easily test/recreate this by spawning in 20-30 mobs in one area on an RTX card or GTX 1070-1080.

Then do the same thing on a non RTX card like a GTX 1660, 1050 or even an integrated CPU. These devices will outperform the higher end devices.

Another possibly better test would be to use a high resolution texture pack on the 2 test devices. 512x resolution or greater to get the best result. The RTX/GTX 1070-1080 card will drop to as low as 20FPS just holding a high res item while an integrated CPU would only lose a couple FPS.

If anyone would want to take it a step further, they can download older Nvidia drivers version 446 and earlier which will completely disable ray tracing for minecraft and the poor performance problem is fixed(the problem being fixed when switching Nvidia drivers means this is not a hardware issue).. I have 2 videos showing the different driver versions https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCocLruDr37nSTxZs5cK2UqQ

{*}{*}The issue I'm taking about here has been in the game since 1.16.200 when renderdragon was released.

Mineliver

I agree. I get worse performance on my RTX 3060 than my old laptop with Vega 3 graphics

migrated

Pointing the finger at RTX leaves out the bigger picture. Devices that have NEVER had RTX still had massive performance drops after Render Dragon was introduced. This is Render Dragon as a whole. Not just RTX. RTX is just a part of Render dragon. Just because you try old drivers or Non-RTX cards and have better results does not mean that the major fundamental flaws in the engine are not also causing problems on other hardware. For all we know it could just be severe hardware compatibility issues as a whole. Its not accurate to claim only RTX is causing the issue and its not fair to others experiencing this same problem on Non-RTX devices to say that their issue isn't the same or any less important.

Mineliver

No, what we are saying is RTX and GTX GPUs should be getting in the thousands of fps but we get around 100fps with a lot of mobs around. (Which is lower than my refresh rate). Minecraft Bedrock seems to affect GTX and RTX GPUs more drastically.

True story:

Back when I had Vega 3 graphics, I was wondering why everyone was complaining about Render dragon's "low performance" because Render dragon actually made the game faster and get more fps for me! Now that I have an RTX 3060, Minecraft with Render dragon and without Render dragon both perform the same: VERY BADLY. I get worse performance now than I did with lower-end hardware such as Vega 3 graphics. Render dragon or no render dragon makes no difference to my fps. It's something outside of Render dragon.

(I'm not talking about anything to do with texture packs, I'm using the game normally)

SIsilicon

I come baring more insight. As you can see from the following table and charts, HAL does indeed out perform render dragon a little in most cases. However the results aren't consistent from device to device. For instance, when testing on my windows laptop, render dragon automatically caps the fps to 120. Also, once a lot of entities are in view, render dragon shows to actually handle it better than HAL. On my android, render dragon strangely seems to consistently be ~5 fps slower, although it may be just my poor readings. I used the beta versions of Minecraft to measure the framerate. It might also be the things added between the two betas, but I digress.

[media][media]

Now for me personally, render dragon doesn't really affect all that much. I play with vsync enabled on my PC, so I almost always get a comfortable 60 fps. And my phone was already slow, so I'm used to the low framerate there. Both devices are considered low end BTW.

Mineliver

Yes, I get roughly the same performance on render dragon as HAL. But the performance I get is terrible so I feel that it's something unrelated to Render dragon and is some kind of loss of support for GTX and RTX and some intel processors/GPUs. Minecraft Java with Sodium/Iris shaders blows Minecraft Bedrock out of the water performance wise and it should be the opposite :/ Just having 7+ mobs or items on the ground is enough to bump my fps down -30fps in Minecraft Bedrock. There should be little to no change in fps at all. People that have worse computers than me don't get as bad as fps which makes zero sense at all. I get the same performance with Render dragon and without render dragon so I don't think it's Render dragons fault we get terrible performance.

100 items on the ground with RTX 3060 (Very Powerful): Around 40fps
100 items on the ground Vega 7 (Low end): Around 350fps

migrated

I am also starting to think it may not be completely renderdragons fault considering when you downgrade Nvidia driver to 446 and earlier, it completely disables ray tracing on minecraft(which is a fix for this RTX/Some GTX GPU problem) and makes minecraft playable with upwards of 144FPS constantly no matter the situation I'm in. I can even use high res texture packs, the only downside is I need the newest drivers for recording purposes and recording on the older drivers isn't the best looking.

migrated

I upgraded from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 3070 on my desktop.....I never had the performance issues with my 1080 and now with the way more powerful 3070....presto, I get the fps drops.

And yes, I used DDU to uninstall my old drivers and reinstalled clean recent ones. Interesting to say the least.

In 1.21.51.01 for Android ARMv8 devices, the Render Dragon was disabled (probably accidently), while the old HAL was enabled. Many players found that the game performance was increased. This is a bit telling.
