I created a mob fall trap over the deep ocean with all caves lit well within 128 blocks every direction (actually considerably more) with the first spawn platform starting approximately 37 blocks above ocean level. This is a design I have used for many years on many different versions of MC from PC, MCPE, Xbox 360 and One with great success. It is 20x20 with 4 spawning platforms in the corners with a 4x4 drop chute. The water streams are 2x8 from the 4 directions with additional water source in the corners of the spawn platforms. This is the basic layout. I have noticed that mobs spawn like crazy (even while I was on the opposite side while building UNTIL I ENCLOSED THE SPAWN CHAMBER . It would appear that for mobs to spawn they need open sky since on the roof of the structure the mobs spawn like crazy until I properly lit the roof to prevent spawning on the roof. The chambers are completely dark by the way and the structure is made with cobblestone.
I forgot to mention that this is a large structure designed to resemble an oil platform. The fall trap is adjacent to a fully functioning Golem farm that contains approximately 22 transported and bred villagers made completely in survival. This is a massive structure that is only fractionally built.

I am currently still experiencing this issue if anyone can give any suggestions. I am considering changing the ceiling/floor material from cobble to stone since the mobs spawn in caves just fine. I was hoping to avoid this since this is a survival world and the shear amount of work and materials required. I may just make a copy of this world and enable cheats but this would mean having to do this task twice if it is confirmed.
Has anyone else experienced issues with their mob grinders using cobble?

I hope this isn't a reappearance of https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-12422 that was suppose to be "fixed". This would explain why there were countless mobs spawning while I was building this. It at least gives me something else to try before the massive amount of work needed to attempt the first.

I just completed my testing.....
It isn't the vertical height bug since I can hover above the fall trap with the uppermost level's roof removed (approximately 20-30 blocks) and mobs spawn at night. I replaced the spawning platforms and ceiling in every level with smooth stone since mobs can be found in caves with no luck. This apparently rules out cobblestone ceiling as an issue. I increased the ceiling height from 2 blocks to 3 blocks but this didn't help either. The only way mobs seem to spawn is when they have nothing above them but sky.
I really would like confirmation of this issue . I really don't understand what is occurring with the community any more since one can go through all the steps of testing and supplying all the necessary information for recreation but no response at all from the team. This really makes one wonder why even bother submitting bugs. Even if Mojang has decided to change game characteristics some explanation should be supplied. Many of us have played since alpha and have spent more than a few dollars in this game; consider there are three users in our home with multiple purchases of several version such as PC, MCPE, Xbox 360 and One editions to name a few. This is not taking into account content such as texture packs, mash-up packs, and skins. The team at the very least OWES an acknowledgment of a reported bug in a timely manner. To be honest I can not believe that they forced this version on the community by discontinuing the other editions before this was ready.

Why hasn't this been acknowledged and moved to internal server for testing? I can't be the only one experiencing this.

this whole new minecraft is unplayable on a converted world

also on twitter no talks about thee mobs being broke or any acknowledgment of the issue

Thanks for some input but sadly my issue isn't from any converted worlds. I anticipated conversion issues upon release and was waiting until the bug tracker showed progress in the area before importing. What is weird for me is that I have experienced none of the spawner related bugs but I seem to be the only one experiencing this reported issue. That is why I was animate about getting someone to try and duplicate/confirm this. At this point a mere discount of the issue would be a welcomed outcome to be honest. This enclosed link would be similar if it contain a ceiling 2 blocks above the spawning platforms. This gives a general idea especially when combined with the link supplied when opening this report.

I built ilmango's most recent mob farm design above water on a realm. I get more ink sacs than anything else. Ido get occasional spawns on the platforms but the mobs definitely prefer the open space of the top level.

I made one too. Spawn rates were EXTREMELY LOW.

Thanks for the verification.

I am having the same issue, Built a fall mob grinder 128 blocks in the air above deep sea ocean and nothing spawns in it. Only time I ever saw any mobs spawn is when the floor was exposed to the sky, but once I put the roofs on then they stopped spawning.
3 layers 16x16 blocks dims.
no lighting issues "Roof is lite up like crazy"
-------completely dark in the spawning areas
Nothing spawns at all tested this for 4 hour and didn't even get 1 mob
Does anyone know if there has a been a fix found or anything?

Just tried this with 1.2.9 and the problem still exists but I do get some mobs dropping IN A WORLD CREATED BEFORE THIS RELEASE. So I can say there was some improvement but I have yet to create a new world to properly test this bug in the latest release.

Tested in a new world with virtual no chance of mob spawns elsewhere and still the same issue. The only thing I haven't tried is a world that is empty (such as Skyblock) and tried it that way. This is a real bug in mechanics so I'm surprised it hasn't been acknowledged or had more votes.

I already reported that, unfortunately thats how it works, you will need to be very close to the spawn and when the mobs will fall, or they they disppear/dont even spawn

I've tested this as well, and can confirm that mobs seem to need skylight to spawn. I've tested it with a normal lit roof, as well as a solid block and half slabed roof. Only when the spawn pads are exposed to skylight do they spawn.
This defiantly seems like a bug, and a pretty serious one. In fact I would go so far to say a that this is the issue which is causing headaches to most people, and why people are experiencing low mob rates.

Been mucking around with this myself. The mobs seem to still be spawning at low Y levels outside of the normal 128 block radius that applies to other versions Its almost like in the bedrock version spawns are checked from Y=0 and go upward, checking for a place to spawn mobs in all currently ticking chunks.
Mobs will find the most obscure blocks on my spawner building with a view of the sky instead of spawning within the spawner itself.
Spawners like the one I have built have been used for years in other versions and still give thousands of items per hour.

I have recently been having issues with the latest update with my Iron Golem farm; just a simple one with water drop to lava blade. Granted the drop rates have seemed lower with Bedrock but were present; nonetheless; but now I had none with a proven design. In order to obtain "functionality" I had to lower the floor level by one to allow a 4 high area AND utilize dirt floor for best rates. It is worth noting that the initial floor height is now Y=63.
If anyone else notes this issue I can create a new bug or someone else can. I searched but didn't see this particular issue and wasn't sure if it was just my extremely bad luck again.
EDIT: I have now verified this. The 2 level simple iron farm was indeed broken (the one with 4 chambers containing 5-10 villagers and approx 20x20 spawn area). I converted the farm to a single level with a 4 high spawn area (which breaks the second level) and the spawn returned. They will spawn on normal blocks (i.e. cobblestone) but the spawn rates seem best with grass/dirt floor. What is interesting to note is that with this single level set up the spawn rates are as good or better than the 2 level design. I have about 35-40 villagers surrounding the spawn area and have had as much as 6 golems inside at a time before adding water of course. It does not need open air over spawn area just 4 high area for the golems to spawn. I'm wondering if the golem hitbox/size changed?

I just confirmed my suspicions by removing the roof/ceiling of the uppermost level of my fall trap. When the roof was removed it took merely a few seconds before some mobs started to spawn which makes this endeavor a waste since only the top level works but only at night; oh joy.
