Part 2 of the aquatic update just hit today so I'm not sure if that's related but I ended up with the Ender dragon in the overworld. I spawned the dragon in the end and we both died to him. We ran back in and he was invisible but the portal out had spawned. I assumed it was a glitch and he disappeared (for the second time) so we jumped in the portal. When we spawned in the overworld large chunks of the ground were missing and he was flying around. It was kinda cool to be honest yet annoying since we didn't get an end city spawn.

I have something similar; after being killed by the dragon for the third time I returned to the end and he was gone. Just previously, I had been hurt by him in all tunnels I had excavated under the island in the end where the dragon is. I had noticed as well, while I was fighting it, an end portal was present.
while traveling back to the stronghold I had heard the dragon in the overworld. As i have stated, when I returned to the end it was gone. Having gone back to the overworld and some time had passed, the game started glitching terribly. The dragon was viewed traveling in the ocean displacing water and other blocks. The dragon proceeded to dive down to the bedrock, then up to the sky, and down to the bedrock. Several times, till it got stuck in the bedrock and the game then was unplayable. All i could do was place torches and blocks without depleting my inventory. All mobs were frozen in place.
All this is in a realm after aquatic update, part 2, xbox x.
Had the same issue as well.
Respawned the dragon, it, I assume, left through the exit portal (destroying half of it), then reappeared near my spawn point in my village I've spent the past 5 months working on. Now a large chunk of my village is gone and I got 4-5 HUGE holes near it that go down to the bedrock and are about 40 blocks wide.
I've basically lost all interest in playing now since it'll take HOURS to repair all the damage the dragon caused through this bug.
This was on the Nintendo Switch version.
Voting for this as well, one of my members respawned the dragon about a day ago and though it was in the End, he died, then his friend died (shown in the picture), once the second guy died the dragon was at spawn. We reverted from a backed up version of the world about 30 minutes prior thanks to the Realm backups, but wow it was destructive, so until this is patched, I've ruled no dragon respawning on the world.
Did some testing of my own, here's what I've found:
The Dragon ends up in the Overworld via the exit portal, not by any other means.
Something is causing the exit portal to spawn early. I think it may be linked to unloading/reloading the chunks around the portal.
Dying (to exit the End) or simply flying far enough away in creative can trigger the portal, but it isn't consistent.
Really hope this bug gets fixed soon. In the meantime I guess I'll have to kill the dragon in the Nether to save my world.
Semi-unrelated: It is odd that the dragon AI is based on coordinates.
You'll notice that the dragon always goes near X:0 Y:? Z:0. Which would also be the center of the end.
This would also explain how some people have reported ender dragons coming out of the ground.
Most overworld ground level is above the Y for the ender dragon.
How does the ender dragon function on Java? Does it always fly to the center of a world?
This is a really bad bug. As the Ender Dragon deletes blocks as it flys through them, it started slowly deleting my entire base down to bedrock.
This should be fixed in 1.6.0 - even if the exit portal somehow opens prematurely, the ender dragon can no longer travel to other dimensions using portals.
A couple of streamer friends I watch just had the ender dragon show up in their survival world they play on together. They are playing on a regular survival world in 1.17.40 with experimental turned off, no cheats, have not fought the dragon yet. One of them recently visuted the end and bridged out to the end cities to obtain shulker boxes and elytra and returned to the overworld by falling into the void.
After defeating the dragon in the overworld, one of them went to the end and found another dragon and no activated portal and proceeded to try taking out the end crystals only to realize he didn’t have a pickaxe for the iron bars and flew back to the end city to put his stuff in an enderchest to come back with one. The second dragon ended up in the overworld as well after this
We have a very similar issue except we have Ender dragons spawning out of the ground in the overworld, more than 1 we have 3 coming from bedrock to the sky, they have wrecked the area around them and there are cave like areas that they have carved out.
We went down to see what was going on and got stuck, could not mine bedrock, had 1 block of dirt on us luckily and managed to get out we mined the dirt/stone around us and managed to get out of the cave but we did not collect any blocks. When we got to the top the world literally ended. there was a sheer edge of black sky with stars. we could walk out into the unknown, couldnt see a thing but could still get stuck on blocks etc. Its very difficult to explain and im not really techy so wouldnt know how to share pictures.
