Concrete Powder Breaks When Falling

I crafted about a stack of concrete powder in my survival world and wanted to turn it into concrete. I went to some water and made a stack out of the blocks. I went to the bottom and started mining the concrete. After I had finished, there was some concrete powder left flying in the sky.

Edit: Most of the powder broke and fell down. Since this was quite a while ago, I don't really remember that there was some flying concrete powder. I will try testing this out again in 1.9.

Additional information added by @unknown:

Re-confirmed in 1.16.40 Hotfix on Windows 10. Confirmation was in a single-player world (Multiplayer toggle off).

Steps to reproduce:

  1. In 1-deep water, place a block of concrete powder. Stack about 64 more concrete powder on top of it.

  2. In survival mode, mine the bottom concrete block with a pickaxe, and keep using the pickaxe as new blocks of powder fall into its place.

Expected results:
As you mine blocks of concrete, the concrete powder blocks above them fall straight down as gravity blocks, replacing the mined block and turning into concrete. After collecting the floating mined items, you have about 65 blocks of concrete.

Actual results:
Some of the powder above the block you're mining is ejected sideways from the stack into the water and is not converted to concrete. After collecting the floating items, you have about 32 blocks of concrete and about 32 blocks of concrete powder. There may also be ghosts of some of the powder blocks in their pre-mining positions above you; they disappear if you try to interact with them.

I was not able to reproduce what you describe in 1.8.0 on Windows 10. However, I noticed that when mining in survival mode with a pickaxe, about half of the concrete powder drops as an item instead of falling as a block. As an item, it fell into the water and didn't convert to concrete (because it only converts when it is placed). This happens even when I'm mining one block at a time with a pause in between. I don't know whether the powder is coming from the block above the one I'm mining or farther up the stack, but it has random sideway momentum when it drops. It should only fall straight down since it is a gravity-affected block, so this appears to be a bug. Is this the behavior you're talking about?

If instead you meant that blocks of concrete powder are left floating in the air instead of falling, it would be helpful if you could attach a screenshot that shows how you prepared the stack for mining. A distance shot that shows both the bottom and the floating blocks would be ideal. Also, what kind of tool did you use, and what enchantments did it have if any?

Some blocks did break and fall into the water, but there was some concrete powder left flying in the air. I used a diamond pickaxe with no enchantments. Also, the blocks left flying in the air appeared to only be a visual glitch since when I pillared up to get them, they had disappeared for some reason. I'll try to attach an image.

Testing in 1.11.0.5 Beta, I still do not get powder left floating in the air, but I still get powder falling as an item when it should be falling as a block straight down. Since that is a bug in itself, I will confirm this report.

Reconfirmed in 1.17.30. This time, instead of half concrete and half concrete powder, I got 2/3 concrete and 1/3 powder.

Re-tested in 1.20.81. I can no longer reproduce this behavior. Instead, what happens now is that all the concrete powder falls straight down as expected, but occasionally the pickaxe breaks the concrete powder before it can turn into concrete. This is timing dependent and seems pretty rare (I got 2 concrete powder out of a stack of 64). It's also a different problem from the one being reported here, so the original problem seems to have been fixed. I'm waiting for confirmation from Mojang that they're done working on this before I resolve it as Fixed.

This issue was still pending in Mojang's internal bug tracker, but hadn't been tested in quite some time, so it must have been fixed as a side effect of other game changes. Resolving as fixed with no fix release.
