Bedrock Realm Download Error | With detailed report:

đź“„ Summary:

After a recent Minecraft update (v1.21.80.3), I can no longer download any of my Realm worlds that contain Marketplace addons. This includes worlds that were previously downloadable in version v1.21.73.01. I’ve replicated this issue across multiple Realm slots and confirmed it is linked to game updates breaking addon compatibility.

🛠️ Steps to Reproduce the Issue:

  1. Create or access a Realm world using multiple Marketplace addons (listed below).

  2. Successfully download the world while on version 1.21.73.01.

  3. Allow the game to update to version 1.21.80.3.

  4. Attempt to download the same world post-update.

  5. Observe the download fail with an error message.

  6. Replace the Realm world slot with a known-good backup — download still fails.

âś… Expected Result:

  • Realm worlds, including those with Marketplace addons, should remain downloadable even after a Minecraft update.

  • Existing content should retain functionality post-update, and backups should continue to work.

❌ Actual Result:

  • After updating to Minecraft v1.21.80.3, any Realm world using Marketplace addons becomes non-downloadable, even if it worked previously.

  • Replacing the world with a known-good backup or uploading it to a new Realm slot does not resolve the issue.

  • A newly created world (that initially downloads fine) will also fail to download once the game receives an update.

🧪 Testing History:

  • April 16 (v1.21.73.01) – “Chicken Jockey” world downloads successfully.

  • April 18 – Backup made for “Flint & Steel”; confirmed working.

  • May 6, 2025 – After progressing the world, download fails post-update.

  • May 8, 2025 (11:35 AM PST) – New test world created and downloaded successfully.

  • May 8, 2025 (8:50 PM PST) – After update, download of same new world fails.

I think this is similar to my issue cause I can't invite and join friends. Its like the connection is broken in this version

I really and truly hope they read this and are working on this for you. Unfortunately, you will most likely get told you are using too many add-on’s (although they’ve NEVER mentioned add-on limits like this before other than things being “funky”), or you will get the default connection/app trouble shooting references.

Whatever was all done on May 6th really messed things up and there’s no way to even know if they are aware and working on this that or the other. And contacting support goes nowhere as well.

Mojang … this user put a LOT of effort info gathering all this info and making sure it was displayed in a way that’s easily understandable, complete, and actionable. Please do not shadow close this post.

Hello @Bob Malugalugaluga,

Thank you for the comment and insight.

My first realm slot has a shorter list of 27 Addons. That world has the same issue as the one with 37 addons. I’ve added more to have Mojang look at those specific addons since I will always play with them in the future.

If they do state 37 is passed the “limit”, I have a list of 27 addons that I can provide.

I hope they make Realms more compatible with addons since they are paid services/products. I believe this Realms download error has been an issue since 2021.

Another issue is that some addons cannot be updated through realms, they become unsynced, and also give an error message when trying to update, but that is an issue for another thread.

I can only hope this gets escalated.

I’m experiencing this exact issue except my realm has only has 18 add-ons. I thought it had something to do with any add-ons I downloaded on April 23rd because, according to my PC files, that’s when the last of anything happened before May 5th.

I was last able to download my realm on April 23rd. My other realm members played on May 4th with no issues. I returned to play on May 5th to download the realm because I wanted to play around with some 3rd party add-ons and I kept getting the error message.

I wondered if it was my game storage and my PC storage so I went and cleaned it up a bit and still nothing.

It’s also happening across all my devices: PC, Phone, iPad, Xbox, and PS5. It’s now May 11th and I’m still having the same issue.

Another thing to note is that now my realm members and I aren’t able to stay on without being disconnected for more than 5 minutes. So whatever they did on May 5th is what’s causing this.

I had a Minecraft realm that only had 13 Add-Ons and I can no longer download my Minecraft Realm world.

If there is a limit to the number of add-ons that are allowed on a realm, the UI needs to clearly state this. If having third party add-ons cause issues, there needs to be a warning stating such.

I have lost a Minecraft Realm world that had one month of progress due to this error.

I have a realm world that is only one week old, I was able to download a backup of the realm just fine one week ago, now I can no longer do so. I pay $8 each month for the 10 player realm.

I have had this Realms subscription since December last year and I have experienced nothing but issues with this premium paid service.

If Mojang or Microsoft won’t treat this issue with a high priority or at least communicate about addressing this issue I may wind up canceling my Realms subscription and using alternative methods of hosting a Minecraft world. At least if I’m running a Minecraft Bedrock server host on a local machine, I can make backups of a world of any size, with any number of add-ons effortlessly without being unable to with a un-helpful generic “an error occurred” message.

This is the error message I am getting when trying to download a backup

Here are the number of add-ons on a realm world I just created

These two images are the complete add-on loadout list on the realm.

There isn’t a single add-on currently on the realm that isn’t from the Minecraft Marketplace.

Platform: Windows 10 22H2 Pro 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2060 12GB
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512GB SSD System Drive with over 90GB free space & 4TB HHD with over 2TB of free space
World Size on the Realm: 25.08MB

Exactly, even when I can only use realms to be able to use third party add-ons on my Nintendo Switch. Can't upload, download, or fool with it at all. Found out the next day after trying to change slots that the world i was going to download to my Switch Minecraft was not there anymore, got deleted somehow. This MUST be fixed ASAP Mojang!

This issue has been affecting me for literal years at this point. Seems to only affect world downloads that are over 1GB on console. The backup download works on windows bedrock but not on console bedrock.

Lyric

Yes, this is completely unacceptable. We’re paying good money for this and the reason why I bought realms is because my game crashed all the time without it but now it runs fine but I can’t download my world and I’m getting the same icon that pops out. “ an error has occurred”. We got to spread the word we’re paying money for absolutely nothing basically

DLon King

We have identified the root cause of the issue and are working on a fix. The issue is due to the number packs applied to the world.

As a workaround, you can strip off the packs prior to download and then re-apply the removed packs after download.
