After attempting to Initialize the download of my realm backup it just says failed. The realm is 500mb + I backup once or twice a day. The other day I reverted to backup, then 5 minutes later reverted backup again. Maybe doing that in quick succession broke something?

A player on the realm used MCPE Viz and a text editor to delete all chunks in the world we did not care about lowering the world file to 200mb. after uploading this world to realms I am now able to download my realm again... Was this a bug, Is there a 500mb limit? So many questions.

My realms is failing to download too. It first began when my world grew to over 300MB it would fail twice then succeed. As the world grew it would fail more times before it would suceed. My last success is 385MB. I tried today and after several failures and no success so I'm adding to this bug report. I tried going from a Wi-Fi to my lan (AT&T fiber) and I tried emptying all other saved world except my last and it did not help. I'm on a laptop windows 10 MC version 1.1.5 and I am the realms owner.

Yep! i've got the same problem, my last realms world that downloaded successfully was 510mb, since then it just fails everytime

Can confirm I am now having this issue, but my world got to ~1.6GB before being unable to download.

I am unable to download the Realm. (appx 1.9GB)
I am also unable to download the automatic backups, which are generated by the realm.
I need to do this. What is the status of this ticket?

I too am having this issue. I have tried from both my phone, tablet, computer, and two different xbox ones in an attempt to get a copy of my world last time I got a successful download my realm was like 2gb give or take. I would really like this issue resolved or at least some information regarding this. ..
I called Microsoft regarding this and we trouble shooted for two hours. I was then informed to contact mojang directly. I have put in a personal ticket as well as reported this bug as I was instructed by the employee who assisted me.

My download has failed several times over the course of the past few weeks including today. I’m running MC on Xbox One S and my realm file size is approximately 1.9GB. It seems to fail after the download has finished and the level import is started.

We have scheduled work for improving downloading of large worlds. Right now, some Bedrock clients can't handle more than ~1.4 GB before crashing. Our ambition is of course to support arbitrarily large worlds, and we'll make sure to fix this. In the mean time, if you can't get a hold of your large world, please start a support case at https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/emails/new and we can assist you.

am having the exact same problem on my xbox one x after the update to 1.8.1 yesterday 10/01/19 but my world is only 95mb in size, it downloads fine on the laptop and saves to a file i even removed all traces of minecraft bedrock and reinstalled it today still same problem

I started having this issue the weekend following the release of 1.8.1. I was able to download the day it dropped, and that Thursday, but when we went to download Saturday, we got the "Level Import Failed" msg. The world is 331.7 MB so it doesn't seem that size is the problem.
I got an email response from support on this issue, they told me to simply change my texture pack then I can download the world.... So obviously they don't understand they set up the realm options so it can't be changed unless it's downloaded.

This ever gunna get patched? If someone messes with the realm I have no way of restoring from a backup.

I have the same problem, tried to save realm to change textures and got the same error “failed” this is extremely frustrating I am paying for a realm I can’t modify or save. What am I suppose to do, there is no fix and no answers form mojang!

I have the same problem.
Version: Bedrock 1.8.x
Device: Nintendo Switch
Hope it'll be fixed in the next update.

Instead of messaging this guy for a fix ill tell you what i did . Redownloaded minecraft pe signed into my xbox live and started the import and it worked just fine ..i didn't have any other maps on my phone either. I think the fact that i had no maps mightve affected it because import has failed on my xbox and windows 10 games and they both had other maps already. So yea if anything move all your maps to a flash drive or somethn then try the export

I have had the same problem with my Xbox and Windows 10 version, I receive the import failed message. However I have been able to download the realm on my Kindle Fire. I have the Chroma Hills texture pack (the BEST) activated on both my Xbox and Windows 10, but the Kindle cannot handle the texture pack. Just wondering if others are using the same texture pack, I noticed that the original poster has the Chroma Hills in their attached picture.

Im using vanillabdcraft

I'm using the same Texture pack.
Hey, maybe this is it. It's the texture pack.
Case solved. Now it would be interesting if the texture pack maker has to fix it or Mojang.
Edit: Or it doesn't work with HD textures.

With all due respect, i offer server solutuons for admins of large worlds, that are no longer viable on mojang realms. I completely agree that if a *reboot, fixes your issue, then you absolutely do not need this. However, if you need help beyond the scope of reloading a phone app, i am available.

I removed the texture packs from the downloaded copy on my Kindle and uploaded it as my realm. When I get home later I will try downloading a copy on my Xbox and let you know if that works.

I agree on BOTH

Wow, lol.
Not shady at all. I love the game and have great respect. Unfortunately, simple solutions are not always the fix. When a simple solutuon helps, thats great, but some folks have serious issues. I was one of those people. Out of respect for mojang bug report forums, i dont advertise too blatantly here.

Besides that, i openly said i offer server solutions. My knowledge is free, and i have helped dozens of admins. Sorry if you were offended. Dont jump to conclusions if you dont know a person.

Did seem a lil sketchy thats why i said somethin. If you got a bigger problem then email the dood

Thank you! The people we have been able to help, have Realms that are several gigs in size. When Realms get to that point they tend to be glitchy laggy constant disconnections and the issue that is described in this bug report. Nobody wants that. We love helping people and promoting the game.

After removing the texture pack from my realm, I was finally able to download a save copy of the realm world.

I got it to work finally, I followed your advice to load on pocket edition ant I worked, hole thing unlocked so now I'm able to download also on my xbox. thank you foe the support you're work is better than the actual support.

I get the same problem. I have tried downloading my world on Windows 10, Switch, Xbox, IOS and Android and all fail at the level import part. My world is ~380mb and when I try to download it it downloads ~519mb and gets to 100%. This started happening after I applyed the vanillabdcraft texture pack. I feel like it is trying to download the texture pack along with the world but I have tried downloading the backup before the texture pack and after at multiple time instances. I have also tried restoring the world before and after I applied the texture pack at multiple time instances and then downloading the world but still get the level import failed error. So in summary I have tried on basically all editions and all possibilities of downloading my world. I also made sure I reinstalled minecraft for a fresh new version before trying. This is why i feel like it is the texture pack causing the problem.

Same happened to me although my realm is 140mb

Tried it on my first backup that was only 0.22mb, same problem happened, no resource packs.

I also have this issue occurring on Win10 Edition. My realm is only ~280mb, but I also have the VanillaBDCraft textures someone else mentioned and I'm assuming that's the culprit. Issue is, i can't remove the texture pack if I can't download the world first. So did I just pay $5 for a texture pack just to break my realm?

Also is happening in my realm, and I seriously need to download it, because of the coronavirus situation, I cannot buy another subscription until the situation is resolved, but I want to continue playing on my world.

Unable to download my realm on bedrock for Xbox one.

It had been months since I first made a duplicate of this issue, and this original issue has been up since 2017. Please fix it, I'm really tired of putting out money for nintendo online and realms so I can transfer over one world from the xbox to the switch. This is getting ridiculous, and I'm ready to demand a refund.

This seams to be an issue with realms 5GB or larger. The download process stalls after reaching 5GB and my realm is over 5GB and I want to make a backup.

This is happening to me on iOS 14.4 and Xbox One.
I was told recently that it has been known to be possible that issues on your realm can sometimes be caused by resource packs and/or behavior packs installed on other people’s realms that share the same hosting server. Is that true? If it is true, might you be able to move my realm to a new server to rule that out as a possible cause for this issue?

Is it possible that this error message of “An error occurred” when attempting to download a world has multiple purposes/is a catch all error for multiple errors that can occur for different reasons?
The reason I ask is because I have found a workaround due to the fact that I’m also experiencing this bug: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-120270. In summary: My realm has resource packs applied and are visible in-game, but my list of active resource packs shows as empty. The minute I apply an additional resource pack, all of the other ones are deactivated in-game. The list still shows as empty, though. But when I do that, the world becomes downloadable again. The only problem with that is that I can’t apply resource packs reliably while the world is being used as a Realm. I can, however, use that as a workaround by downloading the world, and then applying resource packs to it as a regular world without issue, and then I can Replace World with that file.
So I’m mentioning that as a possible clue as to what could be causing this particular bug.
If anyone else is also experiencing the above linked bug, I would recommend trying the workaround detailed above. It seems I’m only able to download my world when I deactivate most/all of my resource packs.

I tried your work around it still does not let me download the world. It stalls at 658MB out of 771.8MB everytime. This is a big realm issue that ought to be address. I can pay to put my main survival world on the realms platform but am then unable to take it off when I see fit to do so. Infuriating.

Related to REALMS-2228?

I've found the solution for this "error" and it is none, let me explain: I've been dealing with this bug for almost a year and I've tried everything and when I was giving up I've realised that this isn't an error, I barely check my saves folder in .minecraft and when I did I've realised that all of the worlds I've downloaded from my realms is in my saves folder, it just doesn't show up in-game and when I changed the names of the save files they appeared in-game and everything was fine so my hypothesis is that minecraft thinks there is an error in the extracting stage but in reality there isn't an error it just thinks there is. Well I don't know if this works the same for other people but I hope this helps you.

Same exact issue as Jacob Whisenant!
Not only the same Issue but stuck on same mb!
However my realm is slighty bigger than his, but like I said stuck at the exact same Moment. 658mb!
Please fix this because we are playin with like 10 People on this realm and if it might crash there is no actual backup of it!

Please fix this bug Mojang. I'm begging you. I keep getting a message that I'm out of storage when I still have over 100gb on my SD Card. I can't access my two year old survival world now.

so basically, I had no success downloading my realm on tablet even though I had enough space but on computer it worked fine. just remember if you are downloading it and its big you will have to wait a while for it to download and it usually won't show a progress bar so it can seem like it's not working but usually it is you just have to be patient. If there is still a problem then tell mojang directly and they can extend your realm or give you a refund. those are my tips hope they help

My realm world download is still stalling at 658MB out of 850.3MB. My backup version from Feb 1st 2021 is still downloadable, but all versions prior are not. Is there anyway I could help in figuring out the issue? Would inspecting my realm for possible causes of the issue even be an avenue of possibility for the bug team? I would love for the issue to be solved, I just don't know how I can help in that process. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I was successful in downloading my world from the realm, finally, after 2 years. Below are the steps I took to finally get a successful download.
This is for Xbox One X, Minecraft Version v 1.17.40.
First, make sure your console is up to date with the latest version of Xbox, which is currently out as of this October.
I started by going to Minecraft game and selecting “Manage game and add-ons”. Then, I selected “Uninstall All”.
This is going to remove the Minecraft game and all of your saved worlds. Which means, you will lose anything not saved on the realm server.
Once the game, saved games, resources packs, etc. we’re removed, I restarted the Xbox completely. No fast boot up, a complete power down.
Once the Xbox was back up and running, I launched “My Files Explorer” App by Marcelo de Souza, available in the Microsoft Xbox Store. I already had this app installed from before. I don’t remember if there is a cost for it. I have no an affiliation with this app or it’s developer.
Once “My File Explorer” is downloaded and launched. I selected “Isolated Storage” to the left. Under the “This Device” tab. Then I selected, “Packages” from the top of the screen next to “Local”.
Once in This Device/Local/Packages scroll down to “Microsoft.MinecraftUWPConsole_(some letters and numbers)” and hit start to get the menu while it’s selected/highlighted and choose “delete”.
Restart Xbox as a complete power down. No fast boot up.
Once Xbox has restarted, download Minecraft from the Xbox Store. Once it’s downloaded, start the game.
Give everything the time to load. Don’t rush it. Everything has to sync.
Once, Minecraft, has fully launched and loaded go to your realm and download your world. Again, give it time and don’t rush it. Sometimes the downloading progress bar disappears. This is normal. BE PATIENT. DONT RUSH IT. WALK AWAY FROM IT, if you have to.
Once I got the successful download notification, I launched the world. The only things missing were my thrown tridents in the farms. (No worries, I’ll replace them later). Now I know my world is safe, I did, yet another, FULL POWER DOWN. Once the Xbox was up and running, I launched, Minecraft and reentered the world again. Everything looked fine.
I hope this helps someone.

Also occurs in iOS 15 (iPhone), Minecraft 1.19.21. Please update the "affectsVersions" and "Enviromment" fields of this ticket.
"An error occurred" appears 100% of the time during the "Initializing download" stage when attempting to download a world from a realm.

Affects 1.19.22

Affects 1.19.60
This problem seems to have been fixed on Xbox because I couldn't download my around 500 MB world a few months ago. Yesterday, I tried to download it again and I was able to.

I now have revision "~.50" and still can not download a realm to my PC running win11. THe realm is 1.5gb. Please look into this!

This is also happening on my PS5. It loads through the whole download and once it reaches the end it says “error occurred”. This is very frustrating as I play with a few people and we need that backup. None of the backups work as I’ve tried downloading 5 different backups during the time frame I need. I can’t believe it’s been an issue since 2017.
ps. The glitch affecting PS5s as well is the new information.

Still an issue in v1.20.73
In my case, the error appears instantly when I press Download World.
I've tried everything from removing resource and behaviour packs to restarting the game and my computer.
Very annoying considering it's the only way to get an up to date level.dat file for the Realm which is very helpful when you need to generate a world map.
I also tried opening the Realm on my iPad and downloading it from there. That didn't work either.

It seems unreal this is not yet fixed. I pay good money for my realm. I would like to be able to physically back up my world. One day, I would like to export my world when we are finished with the realm. As it is, all our work is at risk of being list or corrupted. Please fix this. It isn’t a minor bug.

This is still an issue as of 5/11/2025 and has actually gotten worse. There are now multiple users who are paying for this premium service that have made multiple duplicate issues.
In brief:
I created a new Minecraft Realm world, added nothing but Minecraft Marketplace Packs. There are less than 14 add-ons on the realm. The realm is less than 30MB in size. I was able to download backups of this realm with no issue last week, now I can no longer do so. I already lost a world on my Realm that had a month’s worth of work on it.
Seeing as this has been an issue that has not been addressed since 2017 really makes me question if I wish to continue paying for a service that is as non-functional and bug-ridden as it currently is.
You can refer to my post on this issue for exact details:

We have identified the root cause of the issue and are working on a fix. The issue is due to the number packs applied to the world.
