If there was a simple check in the installer and/or game that surfaced a notification about the existence of the Windows Media Pack it would likely rule out a lot of these instances where it doesn't even show up in the sound mixer. There's currently no indication that the game even requires it while other games work perfectly fine on the same system so it's rather misleading. This pack isn't included in a number of different versions of Windows (At the very least the N and KN versions) but can be installed after the fact as a free add-on. Many games check for and can install dependencies (like DirectX), I see no reason why MC wouldn't offer to install the media pack since it's from MS.

You can check here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\WindowsFeatures\WindowsMediaVersion

This will happen to anyone running the Windows 10 N edition which doesn't include the Media Pack.

Is there a consistent method used to track where defects are ported/fixed in other versions? For example, is there a way to see which corresponding defect for Bedrock that this would be ported to, assuming that it is also an issue there?

As there is no mention of the media pack in the system requirements for the game I would consider this at the very least an oversight. I've been running the Windows 10 N version for months now with no issues with other applications or games (or the Java version of Minecraft for that matter). Since there's nothing wrong with the system it's very hard to diagnose; I was lucky that I came across this defect when I was looking for a solution because it isn't mentioned anywhere else that Media Player is needed.

If it’s any help Jeff, every time this has happened to me I’ve dropped to my death at the original spawn point. I then respawn at the last bed I slept in.

Seen this in 1.5.2 multiple times as well, but my anvil wasn't over the Void so I didn't lose what I was working on.

This could be related to the fact that the spawn routine for Wither Skeletons re-uses some of the same code as normal skeletons - i.e. Wither Skeletons can spawn in a two block high area even though they're three blocks high and will start to suffocate if their head isn't in a translucent block.

Make a spawning platform in a Nether Fortress boundary area with a two block high gap with a glass ceiling to see this in action.

MC-16990 was closed as a duplicate of this but I don't see where it's mentioned here that this also happens if the block is placed under the West hook (disconnected) as the South hook (as you mentioned).

Same principle but in the screenshots in MC-3337 the chest is before the hole you're trying to walk though and the block is placed two above that, not 1 block in front of it and two above like in the screenshot I attached. If you still want to consider it a duplicate it's your call 🙂

I also had this happen when breaking a minecart containing a villager in 1.4.7 so it doesn't appear limited to just a player exiting. Hopefully the same fix will resolve it for any type of entity exiting a minecart in these circumstances.
