I believe the hero of the village effect is just to get the discounted trades quicker rather than trading with them. I don't know if my bug is the same or not. see MC-149880
I'm having the same issue. If I click the trade on the left it wont let me take the book. If I manually enter the emeralds and a book and hover over the book it will give me on the right it's the correct one but then when I take it, it turns into the next trade. I did this 3 times just to make sure I wasn't messing things up. This is a major bug.

An otherwise awesome update ruined by this
On 1.18.12 the removed chunks came back but the world is now infinite which cannot be changed. I don’t really like that but at least I now have my world back.
