Hey gang,
There’s been some conflicting experiences shared in the thread about potential workarounds, so I’ve returned with some proof of my Realm’s experience with use of some of them. Because some folks have stated that these workarounds are also bugged when they’ve attempted them, my hope is that sharing some information about my Realm where they’ve been successful will help the Bedrock bug team determine what makes my Realm special. I can share that my Realm is a 3-person world using seed 828385072. The world size is currently 38.79 MB. I can also supply a world download upon request.
The first pic attached is of a piece of cobblestone I renamed at an anvil to hang above our door on an invisible item frame. The only mod used here is a texture pack that makes glow item frames invisible. Both of my friends on the Realm have claimed they can see the text when they’re playing. This proves both in part that items can be renamed at an anvil and in full that members of my Realm other than myself can see the text.
The second pic is of a sign that my friend wrote and hung. I was not there when he made the sign, but I saw it when I logged on next. This proves that others besides the author of the text can see sign text in my Realm. I have also witnessed other temporary sign text being created and finalized by others. Additionally, I’ve placed informational signage around the Realm. I’ll see if I can get confirmation from my Realm members that they’ve seen the text, but it would seem to me that they’ve seen the signs.
Lastly, I’ve linked to a short clip of me using an anvil to rename a stone sword. In a previous post, I advised others that—if they’re not able to remove the renamed item from the anvil after choosing the text for the new name—they should place a different item into the second slot and that that should allow them to take the renamed item out of the anvil. This was an old workaround that someone said doesn’t work anymore. As you can see in the video, I don’t even need to implement that trick. I just place a stone sword into the anvil, rename it, and remove it, just like normal. This proves that I can rename items for the purpose of hanging them as informative/communicative text in my Realm.
I believe we do still have unresolved issues with chat on my Realm. Occasionally, someone will forget there’s an issue and say something into the chat that appears immediately—for instance, the other day, one of my Realm members said “Be back” and then immediately logged off. I have not tested the /me or /say commands, but if I get a chance, I will and will report back.
I’ve also not tested the book and quill workaround in a while, but someone said that it “also does not work.” Not sure how or in what way it does not work for that person, but I’ve had success with this in the past on a different Realm. I’ll test it out when I get a chance and report back with my findings.

Hey guys. Just wanted to address the complaints that this bug makes the game “unplayable” or makes it “impossible to communicate” with others on a realm. While this isn’t entirely fair or true, in my opinion, there are some (more expensive) workarounds if a sign-based communication style is critical to your group as a temporary measure while the Bedrock team works on fixing this bug.
1. You can enchant items in an anvil and display them on item frames. I actually like this better than signs because the text will float on screen for someone walking nearby, which makes it even more visible. (There is (was?) a bug that affects enchanting items on an anvil that makes it harder to do so, but the workaround for that is to place an item into both slots of the anvil, rename the item on the left, then remove the item on the right, and then the renamed item can be removed from the far right.)
2. For longer messages, you can use a book and quill. A book and quill can be displayed on a lectern or item frame, and you can also combine this trick with the above so that the book will catch the eye of a passerby when displayed with an item frame. Also great because—as long as you don’t sign it—a book and quill can also be written in by others.
Hope this information helps. Please remember to only post information about how to reliably recreate this bug or other new information you don’t see posted in the thread that you think might help the team to solve the issue.
Good luck Bedrock team!
Is it possible that this error message of “An error occurred” when attempting to download a world has multiple purposes/is a catch all error for multiple errors that can occur for different reasons?
The reason I ask is because I have found a workaround due to the fact that I’m also experiencing this bug: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-120270. In summary: My realm has resource packs applied and are visible in-game, but my list of active resource packs shows as empty. The minute I apply an additional resource pack, all of the other ones are deactivated in-game. The list still shows as empty, though. But when I do that, the world becomes downloadable again. The only problem with that is that I can’t apply resource packs reliably while the world is being used as a Realm. I can, however, use that as a workaround by downloading the world, and then applying resource packs to it as a regular world without issue, and then I can Replace World with that file.
So I’m mentioning that as a possible clue as to what could be causing this particular bug.
If anyone else is also experiencing the above linked bug, I would recommend trying the workaround detailed above. It seems I’m only able to download my world when I deactivate most/all of my resource packs.
This is happening to me on iOS 14.4 and Xbox One.
I was told recently that it has been known to be possible that issues on your realm can sometimes be caused by resource packs and/or behavior packs installed on other people’s realms that share the same hosting server. Is that true? If it is true, might you be able to move my realm to a new server to rule that out as a possible cause for this issue?
I’m experiencing the same issue. For me, the following also seems to be true:
1. My realm is already loaded with an array of resource packs that appear to be active in gameplay, but the only resource pack that is listed as Active in the realm settings is Global Resources.
2. When I attempt to activate any additional resource pack, it appears to activate and apply for my realm, however, the effects of all my other resource packs appear to become disabled by taking that action. And when I again look at the list of active resource packs, the only resource pack listed is still Gloabal Resources.
3. This issue does not affect normal worlds. So as a workaround, I’ve noticed that I can sometimes use the Replace World feature to sub in a local save that I’ve applied resource packs to, and that seems to replace my realm with a copy that has the resource packs I want applied to it. However, the list of active resource packs is still empty with the exception of Global Resources, and the problems described in the above notes are still a barrier. In addition to that, the Download World feature (as well as the download button in Backups both) very frequently now fail citing “An error occurred” as the reason. I haven’t been able to succeed with this workaround since the day of the update’s release because of the download error.
The resource pack issue as well as the world download issue both began occurring for me the day I updated to 1.16.210.
Edit: Handfuls of other online users have shared with me that they’re not experiencing this issue and another user expressed suspicion that this may be caused by the server on which my realm is hosted. Further, that issues that affect other realm owners can on rare occasion be caused by resource and behavior packs applied by other realm owners on the same server. Might you investigate whether this is the case and potentially move my realm to a different server as a way to rule that out as the source of the problem?
I’m experiencing this issue on 1.19.0 for Xbox One. Villagers are disappearing when going from the nether into the overworld, whether being released from a vehicle like a minecart or a boat or being pushed through manually. The problem occurs whether on single player or in a Realm. The mobs do not reappear after using the portal several times. The problem still occurs if I reply before going through the portal. The problem occurs in many different places that I’ve tested around a copy of my world in creative mode, but the area where the issue was discovered is around the 32, 180, 180 area. I’ll try to get a world download into the thread asap.
