Water is still completely transparent at certain height levels

This fix only applied to lava. The overlay fog effect now applies to the camera immediately. However this is not the case for water.

To reproduce

  1. Switch to Creative mode and start flying

  2. Use the following commands

    /setblock ~ 64 ~ water
    /tp ~ 63.39 ~
  3. Switch into third-person mode

  4. Start looking up and down
→ At some point you will see below the water without any tint

MC-230472 was resolved as a duplicate of this issue, so I want to say that this does not only affect height levels, but the water overlay will also not render at the side of flowing water.

that's supposed to happen

This is not supposed to happen, it is a bug. It even has a Mojang Priority.

this has been a thing for years, this is well known and has been used in hundreds of speedruns as well, look through the speedrun.com Minecraft 1.9- 1.15 submissions where they use it to find ocean monuments shipwrecks or so they don't pass by the stronghold when boating, it's not hurting anybody so its not likely to be patched

ampolive

The fact that a bug is useful is not an argument for keeping it in the game. It was already partially fixed (MC-3615).

Water fog doesn't render when the camera is partially inside water but not totally inside, leading to an X-Ray glitch.

Expected behaviour:

Still happens with lava too in 1.18.2 if your head is just in the surface of flowing lava.

Happens with both positive and negative y.

I've posted a screenshot with some coords and seed to test.

Just break the 2 blocks in 91 -18 -202 and 91 -19 -202, and leave the lava flow... then go inside the flowing lava.

Use creative mode.
