How to fix corrupt sound files:
Stop Minecraft & Launcher
Delete
[.minecraft/assets/|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]
Start Launcher & Minecraft
Sound files will be re-downloaded
When I see an enderman the game freezes and does nothing. I can't even close it with Alt+F4. It's both on creative and survival.
The Game Output
probably contains something like the following:
Error in class 'CodecJOrbis'
Ogg header not recognized in method 'readHeader'.
Error in class 'CodecJOrbis'
Error reading the header

do you get a crash report ? If yes, please attach it.
No, the game just freezes.

Is this when an enderman enters your field of view, or when your look directly at it (crosshair points at it)?
When it is about 20 blocks away from me.
Please attach crash reports to crash-related tickets.

I am having the exact same problem on OS X with a completely unmodded Minecraft 1.4.6. This seems to be the common issue: an enderman comes into the field of view and within 3-4 seconds, the application completely freezes permanently, requiring a force close. Happens consistently in both creative and survival. Easily triggered by attempting to spawn an enderman from an egg. I have attached a crash report from MC Patcher.

Mattew: That's an antagonism:
... completely unmodded Minecraft 1.4.6 ... from MC Patcher.
MC Patcher is a mod.
That crash report is completely useless.
If you want to help, please press F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crashreport from .minecraft/crash-reports
That's an antagonism
That doesn't make sense here – there is no hostility in what I said.

I think you mean 'contradiction'.

MC Patcher is a mod.
No it's not.
"MCPatcher is a tool that allows you to install mods into minecraft, create backups and add full support for HD and semi-HD texturepacks." (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mods/MCPatcher)
It's a 3rd party tool/application designed to help install/uninstall mods. It itself is not a mod. It also has other functions like testing the stability of Minecraft (modded or not). This is the purpose I used it for here as I followed the instructions here in order to attempt to obtain a crash report.
The method you indicated to obtain a crash report doesn't seem to have any effect after the game has frozen/locked up. But, I did this before any crash happened, obtained a report and attached it here. Although, since the game hadn't crashed at the time, I doubt that this will be useful in determining the source of the problem.
Strangely, at the time I was holding down F3 and C, there was an enderman in my field of view and the game didn't freeze. But, when I tried to spawn an enderman from a spawn egg, the game froze immediately.
Anyway, I hope this helps.

MC Patcher is a mod.
No it's not.
It is. Anything what *mod*ifies minecraft.jar is a mod - hence the name. Even if you manipulate the minecraft.jar with 7Z or whatever.
Indeed F3 + C doesn't work after a freeze since Minecraft is no longer running; that crash report is for getting all the versions, the JVM parameters, if modded and so on.
You might try to update Java to the latest version 7, that has helped in some cases.
So, it's a mod that installs mods? That hardly makes sense.
But this is basically inconsequential to my original point: I only used MCPatcher as a tool to obtain (what I thought was) a crash report by following the instructions on the Minecraft Wiki. By using MCPatcher in this capacity, it did not modify the Minecraft jar file in any way whatsoever. It has the ability to modify the jar file, but it has other functions as well that do not.
And, as you can see from the crash report I attached earlier, my Minecraft application is not modded at all, so there is no contradiction in what I stated earlier.
As for the freezing issue at hand, updating to Java 7 is not feasible for me since it will not run on any version of OS X older than 10.7.3 (where Java updates are handled at the system level and there is no update available for my version of OS X - 10.6.8).

Well, if I had read your first "crash report" to the end, this unecessary discussion wouldn't have been:
INFO: Saving chunks for level 'Experiment (3)'/The End
Error in class 'CodecJOrbis'
Ogg header not recognized in method 'readHeader'.
Error in class 'CodecJOrbis'
Error reading the header
Minecraft exited with status 143
That's a problem with an (enderman) sound file, the decoder crashes.
Update the LWJGL to the latest version http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Update_LWJGL , that will probably help.
I updated the LWJGL as per the instructions, but it didn't seem to have any effect – the freeze still happens the same as before.

Ok, maybe some soundfiles are simply corrupt.
Please delete .minecraft/resources/ - after next start of the game the sound files are downloaded in the backgroung, that takes several minutes.
Or better rename that directory, maybe the corrupt file can be identified.
Yes. That solved the problem. Thank you.
I navigated within that directory to the enderman sound files and deleted all of them. New files were downloaded and the problem disappeared. (minecraft/resources/sound3/mob/endermen/)
I suspect it is one of the "idle" files since the freeze occurs as soon as the enderman is within hearing distance to the player.

Adjusted title

You don't have a backup of that endermen directory which you can zip and attach here ?

It might be appropriate (for the team) to handle corrupt sound files more gracefully. Something along the lines of a silent re-download of that resource, so as not to hinder (let alone crash) gameplay. If such hot swapping is possible.

And apparently I commented on a Fixed thing. Nevermind.
so why is it the endermen freeze my game ? because of sound files ? im not understanding. BTW its minecraft 1.6.2 that im freezing on .
what do you mean by 'restarting minecraft and launcher'? Do you just re-open the launcher and minecraft?

@unknown, removed the "re-". Does that help?
