Game froze for several minutes and then crashed while flying around and loading chunks

Created a new world, with default settings and creative mode. Changed into spectator mode and starting generating new chunks. After a few minutes of flying, I paused the game, switched windows, then came back. The game began lagging, and chunks stopped loading as quickly as before. Shortly after, the game became unresponsive and then crashed.

Can confirm in 1.18 Pre-release 1.

This occurred for me in a new survival world. I attached a recording, after pausing the game briefly, causing the world to save, the game begins severely stuttering and eventually, completely freezes.

Same issue here. Generated a new world, was flying around. Stayed stationary in a single spot while alt+tabbed out of the window, suddenly crashed.

Question for everyone posting crash reports here: Did you increase then render distance in the settings? Please include information about the render distance, simulation distance and if you assigned more RAM to the game via start parameters in the launcher.

If you can't load into a world without this issue, let me know if changing the default launch parameter `-Xmx2G` to `-Xmx4G` or `-Xmx8G` in the launcher will allow you to load into your world again.

I was using a relatively high render distance, around 24, and I had the default amount of memory allocated. Pretty sure I was on 12 simulation distance.
