Chunk render distance on servers seems shorter than in 1.17.1

I have no idea why, but when I loaded up my Minecraft Realm in 1.18, my world suddenly got much foggier. I've raised render distance and simulation distance to the maximum of 32 chunks, but to no avail. This is a significant problem for me, as I have many builds that are on a larger scale.

This seems intentional due to the fix of MC-54545: the rendering is now limited to the server render distance.

Yes, this is terrible.  Realms is hardly playable now that the fog closes it in farther.  The fog is even up/down so you can't see the updates capabilities.

migrated

I also have this issue. I have builds on my realm (started in 1.16) that I cannot see from one end to the other on anymore. It's incredibly disappointing.

You should be able to change the server render distance in server.properties, but I don't know how it works on Realms. If this is exclusive to Realms, this should probably be moved to the Realms bug tracker instead.

migrated

Are the adjustments made in the server properties different than in realms? If so how do we submit a TT for realms bugs/issues?

migrated

Also my server provider doesn't let me go past 10 chunks MAX. I can hardly see anything let alone the new stuff.

migrated

Also, can confirm, loaded up same world on realms from before 1.18 and suddenly can't see as far as before the update. It was borderline not enough before, but now it's just unplayable. I certainly do hope it's a bug and not the new norm.

migrated

Agreed.  On Realms, this makes it impossible to enjoy the views at all or get much of a sense of direction, especially when you travel vertically.  From the top of the any significant mountain, all you can see is fog unless you look down.

I remember some report have this same problem. This is a dupe,

+1 For me on poor render distance. Mine is on Minecraft Realms.

Mine is on Minecraft realms as well

REALMS-6937

I don't understand why they would do this to us, but according to above linked bug report the other day, A [Mojang] Cullen (in the comments) said Java Realms render distance is set to 9  which is just so incredibly low it's unplayable, so possibly we were just getting some kind of advantage of the bug mentioned by [Helper] ampolive earlier in the comments here that has been fixed.

So from what I'm gathering this isn't a bug and is intentional, so I guess I'm going server host shopping because this is outright unplayable in this condition. You can't see anything at such a low render distance, especially considering this whole update is about big mountains and caves. You literally can't even see the other side of an average cavern underground, nor see the top of a mountain while standing at the bottom of it. I assumed I was getting about 12 on the realms before the update and wasn't particularly happy about that but I understand keeping the servers cost efficient so I dealt with it, but was surprised it wasn't 16 which was the old 'default' before Realms was introduced.

Please consider bumping this up to a more playable render distance, this absolutely affects gameplay big time.

ampolive

@unknown Thanks for the information, this should probably be resolved as a duplicate of REALMS-6937.

I Messaged official customer support and got a reply (from GoldPikaKnight) which confirmed it’s a known issue and they are fixing soon.

I've found a significantly reduced render distance for servers.

Here is am image comparing 1.17 to 1.18. Both have the same render distance.

Just to follow up, I went through with finding a server hosting service to run a server and the settings for the render distance works fine. Every adjustment I made to render distance in the 'server.properties' file worked as expected and I can definitely confirm my previous realms was set at 9 for the render distance. This was done with a previously older world from 1.17.1 that had been upgraded to 1.18. (Same world I used on Realms)

I will note, that after some research, that some server hosts automatically also limit render distance themselves. It sometimes will be out of the user's control or with a hard to find setting within their website that automatically changes the 'server.properties' back to a preset setting before launching a server, so anybody having this issue outside of realms, should definitely check with their server host first, particularly the hosts who don't give you much control over your settings as a lower render distance may be forced by them.

Hope this helps

@Micheal harcrow, I saw in one of the realms reports that there is a different 'issue' in bedrock affecting render and that it was listed as a priority of 'Important' with someone assigned. Don't give your hopes up.

+1

I'm experiencing yhe same issue on my Minecraft Realms.

migrated

I am also having this issue. I've upped my render distance to 32, but it seems stuck at 9 or 10 chunks. It's not happening for everyone on my server either.

migrated

On Realms I can not travel in the Nether as it is far too dark

migrated

I'm sorry but why is this being resolved when I'm still having the same render distance issue. I just attached photos to show what I'm seeing. My chunks are set to 32, but I can barely see a mountain right in front of me. Can someone please provide an update on this?

migrated

@Eric Stepanek

It was fixed in the 1.18.1 pre-release.

migrated

@Pattle Bass

Thanks for the follow up. Does it being in pre-release preclude me from being able to see/use it? If so is there an estimated release for the patch/update?

there still a issues on 1.18.1 pre-release 1

migrated

@Edoard

Just curious, is that on a server or a realm? I had a ticket open for realms but it was deprecated since it's a similar issue for servers.

Edoard

@Eric Stepanek

is on the server

migrated

Thanks. I'm experiencing the same issue on my realms. Prior to the release I was able to have max render distance, but now it's stuck at 10. Nothing but fog.

violine1101

If you believe this is still an issue in 1.18.1 pre-release 1, please file a new bug report.

migrated

I am not sure I know how to log onto my realms on the 1.18.1 pre-release. I will wait till it goes live and check it then.

i created new bug report MC-244210

nogluten

Is the issue fixed in realms as well? As if not then it's definitely not fixed, as part of the issue is that you can't change the distance setting on realms at all.

wobst.michael

Realms always runs on the latest stable version, which currently is 1.18. So you have to wait for 1.18.1 to be released.

nogluten

I see, well in that case I'm presuming the issue hasn't been properly fixed for realms, as the list of fixes for 1.18.1 does not list anything about allowing you to change the render distance for realms. Thus I have made a separate bug report for that: REALMS-9851

migrated

@Jon-Jacob you could never change the render distance on Realms yourself. That is set by the Realms Server, you would have to run your own server to change your render distance. That is intentional.

migrated

I've always been able to have max render distance on my realm. I'm going to hold out hope that 1.18.1 will fix servers as well as Realms. If it doesn't then I will be following the new bug report that Jon-Jacob created.

I am currently running on 1.18.1, and this issue is still present. I was quite looking forward to my realm no longer having fog. Currently, the render distance seems to be set somewhere around 12 chunks, even when I turn my settings up to 32 chunks. Had I known this would be an issue, I would have canceled my realms subscription.

migrated

Can confirm after playing with the render slider in the options menu, I am still stuck at 10 chunks. Any chance this ticket will be re-opened?

Addendum: I attached a screen grab to reflect the render distance set to 32 chunks, but only able to see 10.

nogluten

Yup, I figured it would still be an issue, as they never really stated to have fixed the render distance, just the fog. Though because the issue now is that you can not change the render distance in realms, I doubt this ticket will be reopened. I have made a bug report for that - REALMS-9851 but I don't know if they will respond to it or if it is working as intended or not.

migrated

@Aisah Rashwan just FYI, increasing render distance from your settings doesn't do anything above like 12 render distance on realms does nothing, since servers and realms cap it at 12 or whatever number.
This ticket will not be reopened because not being able to raise render distance above 10 or 12 is just how it works, and setting render distance above the cap just does nothing. Although I agree it should be configurable.

plumparrot71568

The render distance on servers can be modified in server.properties. The default is 10 chunks.
