Arrows disappear until you relog when you shoot them at low angles from a boat

If you shoot an arrow while you are in a boat, the arrows turn invisible, but they still make a sound when they hit the ground. Keep in mind that this doesn't happen on land.

This happened to me in 14w11b. I can aim, pull back the arrow, and fire, which removes one arrow from inventory. But the arrow doesn't seem to fly, hit anything, or come to rest in a target block.

Samuel Klumpers

Could you try shooting a lot of arrows in a row out of a boat. Just to make sure you aren't hitting the boat itself.

Mike Brailer

Samuel: I test-fired several dozen arrows, in creative and survival modes. I made certain to fire at upward angles to avoid the boat.

In survival mode, arrows depleted but did not seem to hit the nearby shore. I could hear the "thwunk" sound effect that an arrow makes when you dig the ground from underneath it. I also heard the "crackling fire" sound effect. Sometimes, I would experience arrow damage.

In creative mode, I could hear the "cracking fire" effect. Arrows did not deplete, and I did not take damage.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 14w21b / Launcher version 1.4.4 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Mike Brailer

Yes, this is still happening in version 14w21b with launcher 1.4.4. When I shot at items on shore, I would hear the arrow land a moment after firing, but it would not hit what I was aiming at. I was using a bow with no enchantments.

When I switched to an enchanted bow (Power IV/Unbreaking III/ Flame I), my boat would wobble when shooting, as if I was hitting it with my fist. If I shot enough arrows, the boat would disappear and return to my inventory. I would also occasionally take damage.

I no longer hear the "crackling fire" sound effect when firing.

Thomas Chiarella

Updated the version. It still happens as Mike said.

Mike Brailer

Just want to report that this is still happening in 14w28b (the snapshot released on July 10). It's unchanged from what I reported on May 25.

In creative mode:

  • When using an unenchanted bow, arrows will not fly, and there is a sound effect of them hitting about a second later. (Twice, an arrow seemed to fly and strike some tree leaves, but it disappeared immediately after hitting. I could never get that to happen after those two times.)

  • When using an enchanted bow, same as above, but the boat also wobbles and may disappear back into inventory.

In survival mode:

  • When using an enchanted bow, same as above, but I also take damage as if hit by the arrow.

Mike Brailer

Still happening in 14w30b. I noticed something else: It was night during this test, and when I used my enchanted bow from within the boat, the boat would wobble as usual, but also become brighter, as if it was out in daylight. When the wobbling stopped, the boat would become dark again.

I never tested at night before, so this could be an issue in earlier versions too.

Mike Brailer

Still happening in 14w34a. One difference from before, possibly trivial, is that sometimes I take damage when firing an unenchanted bow. Previously, only an enchanted bow did this.

1.8 Pre1: bow and arrow pretty much useless in a boat. You use up arrow inventory but there is no telling where the arrow went. Sometimes, not always, after a short delay, it sounds like someone just shot me with an arrow. Checking inventory to see a view of myself shows that I have no arrows sticking in me. I can't even hit a dry land from 8 paces away when in a boat.

I easily acquire the "sniper duel" achievement so it is not because I am such a lousy shot!

My primary bow is an enchanted Power 5, Unbreaking 3 bow. After posting my comment last night I decided to try a brand new, unenchanted bow. I see no difference in between these two bows. So it does not appear to me to be a problem with enchantments.

I also do most of my fishing at night so that is when I am usually in a boat and trying to fend off monsters that are trying to get me. But I just went out in broad daylight and by bow and arrow are still not functioning properly.

The question I have is, and I'm not sure if this is where to ask it, is anyone running the later 1.8 snapshots or the new 1.8-pre1 able to use a bow and arrow while in a boat?

If it matters at all I am running the 1.8-pre1 server on my Asus G750 gaming laptop and running the 1.8-pre1 minecraft client on the same laptop. Survival/normal mode. Windows 8.1 64-bit, Java 7u55.

Still happens with 1.8-pre2. I don't understand why this hasn't been considered a show stopper defect! This is a primary weapon in Minecraft and my guess is that the surface area of water is probably like that on earth--pretty significant. So we are talking about a huge problem here.

I have updated by Java to the latest version 7 (7u67) 64-bit, under Windows 8.1. I also have the x86 version installed on my system as well as the SDK.

I created a brand new single player world under 1.8-pre2 with cheats enabled so I could quickly go into creative and give myself a boat, a bow and a few arrows. I then left creative and went back into survival mode, set the boat on a small pond that was nearby, and proceeded to shoot 3 or 4 arrows that seemed to go no where. I heard a splash of water after shooting the first arrow and a second later I heard a thunk as if the arrow just hit my boat or a tree trunk. I was aiming at a vertical stack of dirt. Jumping out of the boat, by hitting 'shift', and my arrows were suddenly returned to my inventory!!!

I then went back into creative mode and got a piece of track and a mine cart, went back into survival, set the track and mine cart, and repeated the above test firing. No problems encountered when shooting from the mine cart.

I don't understand why this bug remains unassigned when it was first reported almost 6 months ago.

Still happens in 1.8 pre-3.

Stoat Patronus

Still an issue with 1.8.1-pre1. Please fix this issue. I'd like to make an adventure map with large water area but I can't because players can't fire arrows from boats.

Bob Lienhart

I don't understand why this bug or one of its many variants remains unassigned when the primary range weapon doesn't work on what must be a significant percentage of any world, i.e. on water.

Stoat Patronus

Still happens with 1.8.1-pre3

Ezekiel

@unknown while I agree, it's important to point out it's technically boats that are broken, not the water part.

Shawn Carter

Can confirm this for 1.8.3 server jar and realms. Arrows do not hit any target when shooting from within a boat. Arrows leave inventory though, just never end up in a block or on ground. Just vanish :-\
Sigh, Boat wars for the win. lol.

Timothy E Roche

I would like to concur: shooting a bow and arrow while in a boat causes arrows to disappear, regardless of target. I first experienced this while playing 1.8.4 and the same unexpected behavior is present in 1.8.6 release.

Bob Lienhart

Also if you are in shallow water and jump out of the boat after firing an arrow then the arrow will return to your inventory when you reach the bottom. Unless of course your bow has the infinity enchantment. To a player it doesn't matter if the problem is with the bow, the arrow, the boat, the water, or the target. What matters is that the primary ranged weapon in vanilla Minecraft does not function as it did in all 1.7x and eariler releases. A bug was introduced during the earliest pre-releases of 1.8 and there has been no indication that any developer has paid any attention whatsoever to this defect. Why does it remain unassigned after 15 months and 7 releases later?

Mike Brailer

Arrows still disappear when shot from a boat in 15w36c. However, I noticed a change in the behavior since I last tested this.

In the past, after firing an arrow from within a boat, I would hear the sound of the arrow hitting a target and sometimes would take damage, most frequently when the bow was enchanted. Also, the boat would wobble and could get destroyed. None of this is happening now.

Affects 15w47c.

Happens if you shoot directly at the boat. If you shoot at the boat with the boat being still, then leaving the boat the boat will get destroyed and the arrows will drop. The arrows also drops when you paddle away from the area you shot the arrows at the boat.

Mike Brailer

16w42a: If I shoot at about "eye level" or higher, arrows behave normally: they hit objects and mobs, and arrows can be retrieved from where they land.

If I shoot into the boat or at a low angle into the water, arrow disappears. Once I took damage. More often, I heard a splash. However, I was able to shoot arrows at higher levels later without having to leave the game.

I discovered that I could fire an arrow into the water, with my boat at the shore and facing away from shore, and the arrow would disappear, but an arrow would immediately return to my inventory. This would happen consistently as long as my back was toward the shore. If I faced left or right, it wouldn't happen.
