[MC-56970] Leaves show x-ray effect on fast graphics

The bug

When you put all graphics options in minimal values, the leaves of all trees seems like 'Fancy' graphics, but you cannot see through them. This effect disappears temporarily when you press T or take stacks of your inventory.

@anyone having this issue:
Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while in-game and attach the crash report ([minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]) here.

In case they might be useful, I have attached another couple of (forced) crash reports for a different environment (Linux i386 running on amd64) under two different JVMs. This has been seen when running 14w25b, 14w26c and 14w28b, but was not seen in 14w21b and earlier.

My tests concur with those reported in other comments – this seems to be resolved, temporarily, by any of:

Switching to a render distance of 4 or higher.
Showing chat input (t).
Having chat history visible on the screen (before it fades).

I have also seen the correct rendering appear for brief periods (well under a second) when walking around the world, but have yet to narrow down what is causing that. I will update if I do manage to positively identify the circumstances.

The only thing that corrects the glitch for me is pressing F1 or F2 or opening/closing Options. Fixed glitches return on loading a new chunk.

In 1.8 leaves in the end on graphics:fast are transparent and have an x-ray effect.

Cannot reproduce on my machine in 19w03c, but that may be just my machine. Additionally looking at the images this doesn't seem to be an x-ray affect but rather the black changing color, probably matching that of the fog.
