In Survival mode, shield offhand becomes unusable after using a Trident with/without any enchantment(s) that does not include Riptide
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enchant individual Tridents with the ff enchantments: Mending, Unbreaking, Riptide, Channeling, Impaling, and Loyalty
2. Enchant individual tridents with combination of all enchantments:
a. Mending, Impaling, Unbreaking, Channeling, Loyalty
b. Mending, Impaling, Unbreaking, Riptide
3. Equip a shield offhand.
4. Enter Survival Mode
5. Throw each of the single enchantment Tridents and crouch.
6. Throw tridents of combined enchantments and crouch.
Observed Results: Tridents that are not enchanted and/or enchanted with anything but Riptide renders the shield useless
Expected Results: Shields are usable regardless of enchantments of Tridents used

Glad I found this report, just ran into the issue in 1.20.0 while making charged creepers for mob heads. You can imagine how that went. The bug works exactly as described above, including swapping away from the trident while charging to fix it. Thanks @TranAran
Voted.
Thank god this was already reported much earlier, I was worried i would be having to stay off minecraft for much much longer. Also the fact you basically lose the M1 ability in minecraft after this makes it unplayable since You are unable to kill any mob without throwing tridents. Also is there any way to undo this bug?

Another way of restoring shield function is to use a Bow. Charge cancel not required.
Finally traced my recurring shield problem to throwing a trident and was then able to search out this issue here. Also happens while throwing from a horse, btw.
On Bedrock PC, I also noticed that I'm not able to throw a trident unless it's fully charged. In other words, there's no ability to draw it back slightly before release like a bow. May be related?
Nonetheless, before finding this report, I was able to consistently restore functionality by tapping right click while holding the trident once it's returned to me via loyalty III. As others have noted, drawing a bow also restores functionality. Until this bug is addressed, I need to remember to tap right click once I have the trident back in my hand to undo this. I've already died a few times before finally figuring this out.
@unknown: Sorry, but the bug tracker is not able to provide status updates on bug reports. We do not have access to Mojang's internal systems and we only learn that a bug is fixed at the same time you do, namely when Mojang publishes it in the Changelog.
Comments are intended for providing additional information about the bug to the developers. Other comments, such as yours today, are considered off-topic and are subject to removal, to keep the report focused on helping the developers find and fix the problem. ↓OK. When throwing the trident, canceling will activate the shield. No need to switch to other items. (*Translation used/Android13/Xperia5 Ⅲ(RAM8GB?)user/Current app Ver.1.20.40.01)
It was fixed after updating to Ver.1.20.50! thank you. (*Translation used/Android13/Xperia5 Ⅳ(RAM8GB?)user/Current app Ver.1.20.50.03)

Did some testing, including the ones mentioned in the other reports (2 as of this comment).
How to Restore Shield Functionality:
With any trident, DRAW it, but DO NOT release. Swapping to another item to cancel the throw is the most surefire workaround (especially in a scenario where there's no rain/water nearby).
Using a Riptide trident (as mentioned in my report).
Eating & placing blocks doesn't work for me.
