This has seemingly been an issue since 1.1 or earlier. I can't check earlier versions.

When using §n, the code and letter is gray to indicate it's being used as formatting:

If it was not intended to do anything, then it would be white like this:

However, the text is not actually underlined.

The §m code (strikethrough) also does not work.

§m and §n there repalced by new colors, so I would say this is resolved

Underline and strikethrough are still missing,

and I think assigning them to two of the remaining letters: v w x y z would just be making the consistency problem worse,

I think this should be 'disruptively' changed, changing copper and redstone trim colours to v and w,

I think the people who already know how modifiers work will be able to find out what changed, just like how they found out about the new modifiers in the first place, and correct the text they've made fairly easily

(and more of a feature idea: wouldn't it be cool if with this change §s and §i modified text into enchantment table language (SGA), and illager runes, changing diamond and iron to x and y)

Issue should be marked as invalid / fixed as the new versions changed the §n and §m to a different function

Can confirm in 26.30.20 Preview. §n now uses copper color code and §m uses redstone color code. A datafixer needs to be done if it was added, so text in player’s worlds do not break.
