Nether to Overworld ratio incorrect for non-Large sized imported Console worlds

In Bedrock Edition, the Overworld to Nether distance ratio is supposed to be 8:1. However, there is a way to break this by importing old Console worlds sized Medium or smaller.

There is a reproducible way to create nether portals in the nether that are close to 1000 blocks apart, yet their corresponding portal distances in the Overworld will only be around 3000 blocks apart, not even close to the expected 8000 blocks.

In other words, even though a World might have been imported to Bedrock Edition from Console Edition, it is still using the Legacy Overworld/Nether distance ratios, instead of forcing a 8:1 Overworld/Nether distance ratio.

Legacy Console Edition (from https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/World_size)

World size Nether-Overworld ratio
Classic 1:3
Small 1:3
Medium 1:6
Large 1:8

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM

Step 1:
=======
Load latest (and final) version of "Minecraft: XBox One Edition"
Create New World (Any seed will work, Creative mode, goto "More Options" and change world size to "Small")
Load the world, then save/exit.

Step 2:
=======
Load "Minecraft" v1.11.2 on Xbox One on the same XBox account as used in Step 1.
Select "Play", and goto "Sync Old Worlds", and import the world created from Step 1.
Once the world is imported, go to the options for the world turn on Co-ordinates.
Load the world

Step 3:
=======
Once in game, fly near the center of the world where the coorinates are close to 0, 64, 0 and create a nether portal.

  • In my specific case, I created one near 58,67,-18 (overworld).

Step through the portal to the nether, and note the coordinates you come through at. In my case, 24,77,-14 (nether)

Fly hundreds of blocks in the nether in one direction to avoid spawning a portal too close to your original one

  • In my case I created a portal at 41,83,-271 (nether)

Step through the portal to the Overworld and note your coordinates.

This is where you can consistently see no matter how far you go in any direction, the ratio 3:1 is being used instead of 8:1

In my case I come back to the Overworld at 124,83,807. You can see the final coordinate is almost exactly 3 times the nether coordinate, not even close to 8 times like it should be.

Bumping after the announcement of the Nether update. Please fix this, I swear it should be like a one-line-of-code fix. I don't want to get to the Nether update down the road, and still be stuck at a 3:1 nether ratio, I want to get around my Overworld at 8:1 like everyone else! :'(

is also a problem on PS4!

I have the same issue for the PS4 for my original imported world. 3:1 is kinda of o.k., but not the exciting 8:1 I was expecting when I started my Nether railroad. Laying 600 meters of track for 2Km is getting old. Maybe a windows utility to tell us what Minecraft thinks our world is.

Maybe related, changing to creative mode does nothing..no infinite inventory, no flying.

My worlds created this year are fine.

I also have to issue on switch. Please can this be a priority issue and be fixed soon.

I have this problem too. Sucks, because now I need to build my ice road 300 blocks more. Sucks man. Can this be fixed if this exists already?

I too would like this fixed. I fully expected the portal connections to get broken. I was looking forward to picking and creating new connections. I have also been placing portals in my primary world for use when it gets fixed.

My Bugged-Out-Console-World-Friends; I bring the happiest of news. I was able to 'fix' the problem of the incorrect "3 instead of 8" Nether/Overworld ratio!!!

I'm playing my old Minecraft world right now on Xbox One (survival mode), and achievements are enabled, and everything works great, and my Nether-to-Overworld ratio is actually finally 1-to-8!!!

All that is required is to edit the savegame file "level.dat" file (in binary mode) so that the byte right after "NetherScale" is an '8' instead of a '3' (again, you must edit the file in binary).

If this doesn't sound like something you can do yourself, fear not fellow Console World refugee's, if you contact me through this site, then I'll help you upload your savegame to my realm (doesn't matter which platform you are on), I'll make the change/fix for you, and then you can download your savegame after I fix it for you (don't worry, won't cost you a penny! ๐Ÿ™‚)

Rejoice fellow "3 instead of 8 ratio" Console friends, we can finally join the rest of the world with a properly scaled Nether! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Zach can you actually do it?! Iโ€™m shocked! I would love if you could help me but I donโ€™t know how you would. Iโ€™m on switch and my ratio is 1:6. Also would I need to have realms? If there is an easier way we could communicate like discord or another dm that would be great! I hope you can help me

I really hope they fix this though. The whole point of upgrading and transferring worlds was that the connections would be in 1:8. I feel the developers just donโ€™t want to do the extra work needed to help a minority. Itโ€™s sad that we are treated this way.

Hi Zach,

I followed what you said and it sounded pretty easy but for some reason my world wasn't fixed when changing the level.dat file. We also have level.dat_old file too with similar scripts.. I tried changing the level.dat file first then both afterward and it didn't work. Any chance you come of spare some assistance?
