Workaround
Removing the 1.15.json
/ 1.16.json
/ 1.17.json
file under your .minecraft/assets/indexes/
folder will likely fix this issue. See also @unknown's comments here.
If this doesn't work, then try re-installing the entire minecraft.
The bug
It seems like for some users, some textures have not been updated properly. This affects the following:
Single chests (render with old texture)
Double chest (render with missing texture)
Iron golems (render with missing texture, see MC-166322)
Shields/Banners with patterns (render with the one before banners used the alpha-channel, see MC-166062)
Enchanted glint (resource pack format version 4, see MC-166056)
Activated conduits (see, MC-166192)
Hair texture of the hoglins (the red/green pixels, see MC-173248)
Zombies (uses the endermen texture)
Panorama (Not being updated to the latest panorama of the latest version of Minecraft)
Additionally, after some updates some sounds don't seem to have been downloaded correctly for some users. This might affect language files too.
Original description
Instead of the texture of a large chest, I saw a black and pink texture. With a single chest, this does not happen.
This problem always arises.
I do not use any resourcepacks and shaders.

I've reopened this ticket, but it would be very helpful indeed if someone could do what Michael said above, so that we can investigate this bug further.

I can reproduce this issue. Chests' textures are broken. I attached the crash report.
Fixed this and all related issues by reinstalling the snapshot.
Is this still an issue in 1.15 pre2 ?
The comment above mentioned that reinstalling the snapshot seems to fix it.

1.15 still
UPD: I fixed this by deleting the entire Minecraft folder entirely

To the users who is experiencing this issue, try checking the indexes inside the assets perhaps? Try to find is a .json file that is called 1.15.json
.

@DrownedZombie I have this issue too, only in 1.15 release. I found the file, what next?

The actual cause of the problem is to do with the .json
file in the indexes. When I had this issue, I realized that the game is using the 1.14.json
file, which is renamed to 1.15.json
. This causes issues people are experiencing such as textures (Mostly the panorama), models and sounds (Vindicator idle5, honey block sounds and iron golem crack and repair) to happen. This explains why the 'Default' and 'Programmer Art' resource packs are incompatible in 1.15. Possible fix is to delete it and try to run the 1.15 again.
Note: It's safe to entirely delete the 1.15/1.16.json
file, as the game will generate a newly updated 1.15/1.16.json
to .minecraft/assets/indexes/
folder once you launch the game. Once you've launched Minecraft, some of the resources are fixed.
If the issue persist again, try deleting the version.json
again to see if it fixes it.

@DrownedZombie thanks! However, I have both the 1.14 and 1.15.json flies. are you sure this will fix it?

I came here to comment that the workaround provided in this issue helped me to fix a weird glitch where the percent sign in the Music & Sound Settings turned into a white square. Thanks!

I dont have any shaders and i have played Minecraft for a year. Somehow i cannot hear any music from juke boxes. Someone told me to go here.
